Job Description

  • The role is within Business Development & Engineering, reporting to the Process Manager.
  • It involves designing, sizing, and commissioning processes for electric smelting furnaces.
  • The position is permanent and requires engagement in project phases from feasibility studies to EPC contracts.
Qualifications and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree in chemical or metallurgical engineering is required; Pr.Eng preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of industry experience, with at least 5 years in electric smelting furnace process engineering.
  • Experience with mass energy balances and electric furnace commissioning is advantageous.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Advanced understanding of process design principles and furnace sizing.
  • Skills in project management, troubleshooting, and maintaining existing systems are essential.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are necessary for collaboration and client interaction.
Responsibilities
  • Provide engineering procurement deliverables for studies, tenders, and projects.
  • Prepare process designs and manage project specifications and budgets.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and maintain professional registrations.

Job Summary: As a Senior Process Engineer in the Absa Design office, you will support Absa businesses and critical projects by creating new, world-class, innovative process designs to improve customer experience, process efficiency, and process excellence. You will provide expert advice to senior business stakeholders and create high-quality process design methodologies, tools, and practices to increase overall process design capability. The ideal candidate is a recognized expert in process design and process excellence, capable of delivering rigorous and creative process solutions aligned to business strategy and objectives. The role includes coaching and mentoring to develop process design skills across the design team.

Responsibilities
  • Create high quality and innovative process designs across a business area or channel to improve customer experience, process efficiency, and process excellence to meet defined business objectives
  • Provide thought leadership across multiple projects, delivering high-quality, creative design solutions to complex problems
  • Deliver continuous and step-change improvements in process efficiencies and process rigor to improve delivery quality and reduce cost
  • Investigate and analyze customer value, pain points, and priorities in relation to business strategy; translate into requirements addressing risk, compliance, and technical limitations
  • Scope, prioritize, and execute design work with data-driven approach and timely delivery of outcomes (quality, cost, service levels); ensure high design quality
  • Collaborate with business and channels to ideate, conceptualize, develop, test, evaluate and evolve new process designs
  • Ensure end-to-end business impact is measured and understood; document outputs so input requirements for downstream partners (Operations, Product, Technology) are met
  • Manage stakeholder expectations regarding timelines and outcomes; identify failure modes and provide mitigation plans
  • Stay involved post-implementation; track and report success against agreed outcomes
Additional Responsibilities
  • Provide expert advice and solutions to influence and implement business strategy
  • Support long-term product and customer strategy; develop and refine design practices within the business area
  • Act as a senior thought partner in customer experience and design innovation
  • Provide insights based on design methodologies (e.g., lean, six sigma) and knowledge of technologies and best practice
  • Translate business intent and insights into tangible process recommendations and vision with high value-add
  • Promote reuse of designs and end-to-end value chain ownership
  • Stay updated on industry trends and ensure competitive and industry-leading design
  • Contribute to the wider process design community within the bank
  • Develop process design capability and community; provide ongoing training, mentoring, and coaching
  • Drive the creation and continuous improvement of the team’s design approach from analysis to implementation; contribute to training curricula, tools, and processes
  • Share knowledge and promote process excellence across the organization by training and upskilling staff

Education

NQF Level 8 or higher. Bachelor’s Degrees and Advanced Diplomas: Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences (Required)
