A Water Treatment company based in the Cape Town region has a vacancy for a Process Engineering Lead (Wastewater). A BSc/BEng/Masters in Chemical/Water Treatment and a minimum of 4 years experience in wastewater treatment products and services, focusing on wastewater design and implementation is required.

Description:

The Process Engineering Lead must design an optimal water treatment system that meets the client’s requirements based on a thorough analysis of the information at hand. It is expected that the Process Engineering Lead critically analyses and evaluates the information (with respect to quality, quantity, and accuracy) which will provide valuable feedback to the applicable departments and steer the direction of the project.

Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering/Process Engineering (B.Eng or equivalent).
  • Masters degree (Water related) will be advantageous.
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in wastewater focused on wastewater design and implementation.
  • Practical and theoretical understanding of wastewater configuration and treatment strategies.
  • General understanding of/familiarity with Water and Wastewater Treatment Products and Services and ancillary technologies.
  • Code B Drivers license.
  • Ability to generate and interpret P&IDs.
  • System design and generation of mass/hydraulic balances for PFDs.

Duties:

  • Collaborate with Business Development and Costings & Proposals in preparation of budget and final proposals.
  • Technical evaluation of tenders.
  • Interact and collaborate with the broader engineering team.
  • Evaluate engineering processes and develop treatment strategies based on research and application of existing knowledge.
  • Develop process solutions based on customer requirements.
  • Implement process design improvements based on operator/engineering feedback on existing installations/executed projects.
  • Prepare product reports by collecting, analysing, and compiling information and trends.
  • Provide detailed engineering information as required.
  • Oversee and mentor juniors/graduates and/or interns.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge.
  • Contribute to teamwork by communicating ideas and design approach as well as completing assigned tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Provides first-line technical support and consulting for pump applications.
  • On-site assistance with installation of products.
  • Do system analysis and fault finding on-site and compile reports with the necessary solutions and root cause analysis.
  • Assist Sales representatives in presenting proposed solutions to clients.
  • Required to meet or exceed Customer Support quality assurance standards on a consistent basis.
Requirements For The Role
  • Must display a strong mechanical and or process engineering ability.

The Process Safety Design Engineer is responsible for developing and integrating process safety strategies and engineering solutions into facility designs, ensuring compliance with international safety standards and reducing operational risk across oil & gas facilities. This role involves working across multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective engineering solutions in both greenfield and brownfield projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support process safety design activities across project lifecycle stages (conceptual, FEED, detailed design).
  • Conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), including HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL studies.
  • Develop and maintain safety documentation including Bow-Tie diagrams, safety philosophies, Cause & Effect charts, and fire & explosion risk assessments (FERA).
  • Design and specify safety systems such as ESD, fire and gas detection, relief systems, and pressure protection devices.
  • Perform quantitative risk assessments (QRA), dispersion modeling, and consequence analysis.
  • Ensure designs meet local and international codes and standards (API, IEC, NFPA, ISO, OSHA, etc.).
  • Support development and review of Safety Cases, SIMOPS plans, and emergency response plans.
  • Interface with process, piping, instrumentation, mechanical and civil engineers for integrated safety solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews (3D model reviews, P&ID reviews, constructability and operability reviews).
  • Provide technical input to procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field.
  • Postgraduate training in Process Safety Engineering (preferred).
  • Professional Engineering Registration (e.g., PrEng, CEng, PE) is advantageous.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of process safety design principles and risk assessment techniques.
  • Proficiency in process simulation tools and safety analysis software (e.g., PHAST, PIPENET, DNV GL, PHA-Pro).
  • Familiarity with international oil & gas safety regulations and standards.
  • Ability to interpret and develop PFDs, P&IDs, and engineering drawings.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and report writing skills.
  • Highly analytical with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Attention to detail with a commitment to operational integrity and safety.

Experience:

  • 5–10 years of experience in process safety and risk management within the oil & gas, petrochemical, or energy sector.
