ABOUT MAMATWAN:
The South Africa Manganese operation can be found in the manganese rich Kalahari Basin, in the country's Northern Cape, which is home to 80 per cent of the world's manganese. This position is based at our open-cut Mamatwan mine which started operating more than half a century ago.
WHAT SOUTH32 OFFERS:

ABOUT THE ROLE:
This role is a permanent full-time position.
As a chemist laboratory, you will involve safe, accurate and timeous analysis of shift samples using different analytical techniques, reporting of analytical results to processing plants, safe storage and disposal of routine lab waste and old samples, adherence to Laboratory standard operating procedures and QA/QC protocols, and good housekeeping. In addition to the above, you will under the direction of Senior Chemist perform routine quality and safety inspections, compile and send daily consignment reports to the customers, assist with training to all lab personnel, perform non-conformance investigations, file laboratory documents according to the lab document control system.
Other key responsibilities include, but aren't limited to:
- Ensure that all lab instruments and equipment are calibrated, maintained and checked regularly to provide valid and accurate measurement all the time;
- Ensure that test methods and protocols are followed by the laboratory personnel;
- Report analytical data to customers;
- Ensure that all analytical results are accurate, traceable, recorded and reported in line with Laboratory Systems (LIMS);
- Timeous reporting of analytical results and certificates of analysis;
- Troubleshoot and assist in problems arising in the systems and any other laboratory instruments;
- Perform routine safety and quality inspections;
- Perform routine waste and chemicals inventory inspections.
ABOUT YOU:
You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:
- Must have a minimum of 3 years' experience in a mining laboratory environment;
- Mining or Energy experience is preferred;
- Strong experience in developing commercial strategies and leading high-value strategic negotiations, strong understanding of commercial principles.
Qualifications for this role are:
- BSc/ BTech Chemistry/ National Diploma Analytical Chemistry;
- Completed ISO 17025 certificate;
- Valid drivers license.

Key Responsibilities
Formulation & Development
- Design, develop, and test new skincare, bath, and body formulations aligned with brand philosophy and market trends
- Innovate eco-friendly, natural, and vegetarian products that meet both consumer needs and regulatory requirements.
Compounding & Manufacturing Support
- Oversee and guide compounding processes to ensure batch consistency and adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
- Support production teams with technical expertise, ensuring smooth scale-up from lab to full production.
Quality Control & Compliance
- Establish and maintain QC protocols, ensuring every batch meets safety, stability, and performance standards.
- Prepare and maintain laboratory documentation, specifications, and regulatory compliance records.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with the CEO on product strategy, innovation, and special projects
- Partner with manufacturing, operations, and R&D teams to continuously improve processes and efficiency
- Contribute technical insight to supplier selection, raw material evaluation, and cost optimization.
Research & Market Awareness
- Stay informed about industry innovations, ingredient trends, and regulatory changes
- Recommend improvements and new ingredient technologies for next-generation products
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, or related field (Master's advantageous)
- 3–5+ years of hands-on formulation and compounding experience in cosmetics, skincare, or personal care
- Proven track record in quality control, regulatory compliance, and lab documentation.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, raw material handling, and GMP.
- Ability to problem-solve in a fast-paced production environment while ensuring product integrity.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills; confident working directly with executive leadership.
- Passion for eco-friendly, sustainable, and ethical skincare.
