MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:

Lead major, minor and miscellaneous projects in the Electrical Engineering function and/or managing professional Electrical Engineering work involving considerable independence in approach, demanding considerable degree of originality, ingenuity and judgement, and knowledge of more than one field of, or expertise in a particular field of professional Electrical Engineering.

The Principal Electrical Engineer is responsible for the progress and quality of assigned tasks within the Electrical Engineering discipline, including the supervision of Senior Electrical Engineers, Electrical Engineers and Junior Electrical Engineers.

The Principal Electrical Engineer carries out all electrical engineering and design work in accordance with agreed codes and practices that meets all requirements of the contract. Also, to ensure all work is carried out within agreed schedules, budgets and procedures as per the company Engineering Governance Standard.

To conduct engineering and design work independently and in accordance with the Worley requirements set out in the Technical Stewardship Standard (TSS). Demonstrate and exhibit a very high level of technical competence in the electrical engineering field, as well as technical coordination, planning, estimating and technical leadership.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Electrical Engineering and Design/Technical expertise.

  • Provision of expert knowledge (discipline specific) to conceptual engineering, pre-feasibility design, (FEL2) basic engineering, (FEL3) and detailed design.
  • This would include the interpretation and application of relevant international and national codes and standards and clients specifications.
  • Technical direction advice and control of the Electrical Engineering work on projects.
  • Liaison with customer discipline representatives to establish technical direction where not provided by the contract, nor in codes and standards.
  • Liaison with other project discipline Lead Engineers on technical issues and engineering matters, including the provision of discipline advice on issues not covered by design codes or standards.
  • Development and improvement of company standards and design methods, including execution of work in conjunction with other key stakeholders.
  • Complete complex electrical design activities, which could include advanced analysis methods.
  • General Media and Worley Global participation in discipline activities.
  • ures, and suggest/register Process Improvements (PIs) for review and possible implementation
  • Complete, analyse, review and/or approve complex electrical design activities and deliverables. This could involve software tools and programs.
  • Publish articles in engineering media. Write discipline Goby’s, SEAL bulletins and be active in Global Electrical Discussions.

Project Execution and proposal/business development.

  • Lead Electrical Engineering activities on major, minor and miscellaneous projects and/or providing expert level technical knowledge and guidance in all phases of projects (conceptual engineering, pre-feasibility engineering (FEL2), basic engineering (FEL3) and detailed engineering design).
  • Establishing scope of work for each project or proposals.
  • Undertake electrical design activities required of the designation, including system and/or equipment calculations, electrical datasheets, engineering requisitions, electrical equipment lists, technical bid evaluations, electrical design criteria, input into the Basis of Design document, SEAL plan input, relevant design drawings and other project documents.
  • Support the National Discipline Manager Electrical Engineering to establish the scope of work for projects or proposals, including manpower schedules.
  • Schedule and expedite work assigned to the Electrical Engineering team on projects.
  • Implement and administer the planning, scheduling, cost control and engineering governance to design during design phases of projects.
  • Review and approve technical documentation on projects related to Electrical Engineering.
  • Review and comment on vendor data (incl. equipment and packages for compliance to purchase order/contract requirements as well as to integrate equipment into the broader plant.
  • Identify and offer recommendations of new technology developments which will be applicable in providing more cost effective facilities or solutions.
  • Ensure that at completion of projects, all technical documentation (incl. drawings, specifications, minutes of meetings, etc.) are collated, revised to as-built status and handed over to document control for archiving (i.e. complete and proper close-out of projects).
  • Review and approve technical documentation on projects related to Electrical Engineering.
  • Review and comment on vendor data (incl. equipment and packages for compliance to purchase order/contract requirements as well as to integrate equipment into the broader plant.
  • Identify and offer recommendations of new technology developments which will be applicable in providing more cost effective facilities or solutions.
  • Ensure that at completion of projects, all technical documentation (incl. drawings, specifications, minutes of meetings, etc.) are collated, revised to as-built status and handed over to document control for archiving (i.e. complete and proper close-out of projects).
  • Coordination and preparation of input to essential Electrical Engineering documents, as defined by the project Discipline Task and Deliverable Plan (DTDP).
  • Perform regular customer visits where applicable to the field of work.
  • Assist with business development activities and marketing.

Technical stewardship and SEAL compliance.

  • Ensure compliance with specified engineering codes, standards, procedures, quality plans and Worley policies and procedures.
  • Undertake technical peer reviews of Electrical Engineering work and deliverables on projects and providing remedial actions and recommendations for improvements
  • Assisting in carrying out quality assurance audits/ technical due diligence of contractors and vendors.
  • Responsible for the delivery of HSE standards across specialist discipline, including demonstration of leadership in the delivery of safe and Environmentally Sustainable Design (SD) solutions through Safety in Design (SID) manuals.
  • Responsible for personal safety and to adhere to safe working practices. Understand, implement and ensure that all legal requirements as required by the occupational Health and Safety Act and/or the Mines Health and Safety Act are incorporated
  • Promote cost reduction and productivity enhancing initiatives, including the determination of relative costs of alternative design concepts and establishment of preferred concepts.
  • Manage man-hours of Electrical Engineering teams on projects and ensure that quality work is completed on schedule within the available budget.

    Staff management and performance.
  • Manage project staff workload and key deliverables in line with deadline requirement, scope and Worley procedures.
  • Typically will regularly interface with departmental staff and upper management, and frequently with outside customers.

Learning and development

  • Responsible for his professional development as engineer.
  • Act as mentor to electrical engineers.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB


Minimum Qualifications

  • BSc, BEng, BTech, or MSc in Electrical Engineering from a recognised institute.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist with ECSA.

Experience

  • Extensive post-qualification experience in electrical engineering, with a strong background in design, operations, and project execution.
  • Proven expertise across industries such as Mining, Minerals and Chemicals, Hydrocarbons, Power, and Public Infrastructure.

  • Review and comment on vendor data (incl. equipment and packages for compliance to purchase order/contract requirements as well as to integrate equipment into the broader plant.
  • Identify and offer recommendations of new technology developments which will be applicable in providing more cost effective facilities or solutions.
  • Ensure that at completion of projects, all technical documentation (incl. drawings, specifications, minutes of meetings, etc.) are collated, revised to as-built status and handed over to document control for archiving (i.e. complete and proper close-out of projects).
  • Coordination and preparation of input to essential Electrical Engineering documents, as defined by the project Discipline Task and Deliverable Plan (DTDP).
  • Perform regular customer visits where applicable to the field of work.
  • Assist with business development activities and marketing.

Technical stewardship and SEAL compliance.

  • Ensure compliance with specified engineering codes, standards, procedures, quality plans and Worley policies and procedures.
  • Undertake technical peer reviews of Electrical Engineering work and deliverables on projects and providing remedial actions and recommendations for improvements
  • Assisting in carrying out quality assurance audits/ technical due diligence of contractors and vendors.
  • Responsible for the delivery of HSE standards across specialist discipline, including demonstration of leadership in the delivery of safe and Environmentally Sustainable Design (SD) solutions through Safety in Design (SID) manuals.
  • Responsible for personal safety and to adhere to safe working practices. Understand, implement and ensure that all legal requirements as required by the occupational Health and Safety Act and/or the Mines Health and Safety Act are incorporated

Financial/Cost management.

  • Promote cost reduction and productivity enhancing initiatives, including the determination of relative costs of alternative design concepts and establishment of preferred concepts.
  • Manage man-hours of Electrical Engineering teams on projects and ensure that quality work is completed on schedule within the available budget.

    Staff management and performance.
  • Manage project staff workload and key deliverables in line with deadline requirement, scope and Worley procedures.
  • Typically will regularly interface with departmental staff and upper management, and frequently with outside customers.

Learning and development

  • Responsible for his professional development as engineer.
  • Act as mentor to electrical engineers.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB


Minimum Qualifications

  • BSc, BEng, BTech, or MSc in Electrical Engineering from a recognised institute.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist with ECSA.

Experience

  • Extensive post-qualification experience in electrical engineering, with a strong background in design, operations, and project execution.
  • Proven expertise across industries such as Mining, Minerals and Chemicals, Hydrocarbons, Power, and Public Infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex engineering projects and teams through various phases of execution.

The Vice President of Project Development will play a pivotal role in advancing renewable energy projects in South Africa, with a strong focus on off-site (wheeling) power projects. Key Responsibilities

KRA 1: Lead the development of off-site (wheeling) power projects in South Africa

  • Formulate the decision gating framework for YDE wheeling projects in South Africa suitable for solar, wind, and BESS asset installation
  • Work with current and new land developers to maintain a pipeline of potential project sites
  • Use framework to prioritize project sites based on the needs of the business, MW capacity, interconnection availability, permitting status, etc.
  • Negotiate the acquisition of the preferred sites
  • Work proactively with the business development team to ensure our develop reflects the MW scale, location, and type of power needed by our current and future customers
  • Leverage the capabilities of the Project Management team for the permitting, interconnection agreements, and EPC/O&M arrangements
  • Leverage the capabilities of the Design team for yield and costing of each project site
  • Ensure that all development is future proof considering possible regulation changes
  • Ensure that all development is future proof, and that sites generate the highest returns possible by minimizing the levelized cost of power from each site
  • Take an active role in all relevant negotiations in the development phase including EPCs, advisors’ fees, etc.
  • Identify projects risk, recommend solutions and feedback to executive management.
  • Provide valuation and due diligence guidance to YDE’s CFO and corporate finance team.
  • Actively participate in networking activities, building relationships with potential new customer and identifying opportunities for the business.
  • Acts as the project or market champion within YDE, leading all aspects of the business and project development from the initial stages through order entry
  • When required, hire team members to support responsibilities
  • Provide regular updates on project progress as required by managers and YDE leadership
  • Provide support to annual planning including development budgets and timing of Capital Investments

KRA 2: Ensure all projects are strong investments approved by the IC

  • Work closely with the legal and finance team to ensure all developments are bankable long-term investments
  • Work with the Risk team to develop an Investment Committee package that includes the formal IC paper as well as a presentation to explain the broader benefits and risk of all projects
  • Support Board/IC presentations on the developed projects

KRA 3: Communicate and promote YDE in the South African market

  • Leverages networking opportunities, social media, industry events, and cold outreach to uncover opportunities and turn them into long-term partnerships.
  • Establishes key relationships with industry and thought leaders, creating strategic awareness in the market.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Energy Policy, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
  • 8–10 years of experience in project development within the renewable energy sector (solar, hybrid and/or energy storage).
  • Proven track record in land acquisition, permitting, and interconnection agreements.
  • Strong understanding of South African energy regulations and market trends.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement , including lenders, regulators, and government entities.
  • Financial modeling proficiency , with experience supporting investment committee approvals.
  • Strong negotiation and project management skills.
  • Master’s degree in Business (MBA), Finance, Renewable Energy, or Energy Policy.
  • Experience in wheeling projects and large-scale renewable energy developments.
  • Multinational or cross-cultural team experience.

PURPOSE OF ROLE

Produce quality technical outputs which satisfy all requirements (Clients, Codes and Standards) by adhering to internal engineering processes. The position is a senior technical role requiring leadership qualities.



KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • LV and MV Systems Engineering (conceptual & detail design and development of electrical systems and networks)
  • Design, specification, and execution of electrical systems for industrial plants
  • Design of LV & MV Motor Control Centres
  • Design of LV & MV industrial plant reticulation systems
  • Design of DC plant and battery systems
  • Design of renewable energy systems
  • Design of protection systems
  • Specification of Electrical Switchgear and Motor Protection Equipment
  • Design of cable networks and distribution systems
  • Lighting and small power designs
  • Design of earthing and lightning protection systems
  • Ensure design compliance with the South African Grid Code
  • Managing the electrical interfaces with other disciplines
  • Participation in and management of procurement and installation contracts and documentation, including tender evaluation.
  • Assistance during the fabrication phase of all projects
  • Assisting with tender compilation
  • Project cost estimations (including the compilation of Bill of Quantities (BOQs)
  • Compilation of tender scope of work.
  • Assisting with testing and commissioning of electrical systems
  • Mentoring of junior personnel

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • BSc (Eng) or B Eng degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Registered with ECSA as a Professional Engineer – pr Eng (A MUST HAVE)
  • Minimum 10 years relevant multi-disciplinary project design experience, especially in the Power Generation Industry.
  • Business Development Experience within the Renewable Space
  • Experience designing PV Systems.
  • Working knowledge of OHS Act and the Regulations.
  • Working knowledge of the Environmental Legislation.
  • Working knowledge of SANS & IEC codes, Safety Management Standards and ISO 9001.
  • Knowledge and experience with the South African Grid Code.

COMPETENCIES
  • Good communication and technical report writing skill.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • The use of ETAP or DigSilent would be very beneficial.
  • Ability to operate under pressure in a team environment, must be a fast and accurate worker who is results driven.
