Job Purpose

The Department of Agriculture, Western Cape Government has an opportunity for a suitably qualified and competent individual to undertake advanced research for the development of new and adaption of existing technology in the field plant pathology, aimed at improving farming efficiency and to transfer technology to the entire agricultural sector.

Minimum Requirements

An appropriate Science Degree BSc (Hons) or equivalent in Plant Pathology; Compulsory registration with SACNASP as a Professional Natural Scientist in the appropriate field of practice; A minimum of 3 years post-qualification natural scientific experience in Plant Pathology; A valid driving licence.

Key Performance Areas

Participate with problem identification, problem definition and the prioritization of research needs in in the field of plant pathology and crop health management in accordance with the departmental strategic plan to ensure that relevant and applicable research is conducted; Conduct scientifically accountable, innovative and advanced research trials (on-site) to ensure that cutting edge research is conducted and an information source is available for sustainable agricultural practices; Conduct statistical analysis, interpret results, formulate conclusions and present research findings to all relevant stakeholders and beneficiaries; Perform all administrative and related functions; Keep up to date with applicable prescripts, policies, procedures, technologies and new developments to be able to render an efficient and effective Research service.

Are you a skilled telephone researcher? Are you seeking variety and curious to learn more about new areas? Are you commercially minded and want to see the results of your research? Are you reliable and able to keep on top of appointments?

We are looking for an experienced telephone researcher (min 1 year of experience) to conduct B2B telephone interviews across a variety of different business sectors with both warm leads via scheduled appointments and by generating your own leads (c. 50/50 split)Looking to fit work around the school run?

We can offer flexibility in terms of hours around a set of core working hours. Essential core hours are between on days worked, minimum of 3 days worked per week. We are open to discussing and agreeing different working patterns.

A phone line will be provided, however all applicants must have:

  • Windows 10/11 PC or laptop
  • Unlimited home broadband
  • Quiet and comfortable workspace

Senior Data Scientist / Algorithm Developer

Unique and exciting Senior Data Scientist opportunity within a
leading global sports technology company
on a mission to solve the hardest problems in elite sports.

Required skills / experience:

  • BEng/BSc or higher, in Electronic Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science;
  • Clear understanding of basic signal processing concepts, such as filtering, Nyquist frequencies and time-frequency transformations;
  • Appreciation of algorithm performance evaluation techniques, e.g. receiver-operating-curves;
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms such as regressions, decision trees, SVMs and Neural Networks;
  • Well-versed in using mathematical software for data extraction and simulation of algorithm performance (such as Python, MATLAB, Octave or R)

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and evaluate the performance of signal processing algorithms to provide valuable insights
  • Develop and maintain documentation of the data science architecture and algorithms developed within the team.
  • Developing algorithms independently under the guidance and supervision of senior team members.
  • Define and collect sensor data with adequate performance reference for algorithm development.
  • Develop machine learning algorithms to provide predictive insights into team strategy.
