Job Purpose

Reporting to the Vice-Principal: Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Education, the Director will lead and manage the University’s research strategy and development agenda, commercialisation initiatives, and postgraduate education. The successful candidate will be responsible for strengthening UP’s research capacity by growing the next generation of scholars, attracting research funding and grants, auditing and processing external grants, and enhancing the postgraduate and postdoctoral experiences.

Responsibilities

The successful incumbent’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide visionary and strategic leadership in advancing the University’s research agenda, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities, national imperatives, and global trends in knowledge production and innovation.
  • Identify and secure research funding from diverse sources, national funding agencies, international funders, philanthropic organisations, and industry, while supporting researchers in grant proposal development and strategic funding alignment.
  • Engaging with faculties and transdisciplinary platforms, drive research excellence and promote the University’s research profile by providing strategic leadership in research policy, planning and implementation.
  • Provide leadership in the cross-cutting functions of postgraduate coordination, research capacity development, innovation and intellectual property and contract management.
  • Develop, oversee and continuously improve systems, including to:
    • I dentify and make use of research funding opportunities;
    • Provide information required for planning, implementing and reporting on UP’s research activities and for strengthening its research performance and standing;
    • Oversee administration and quality assurance related to internal and external research grants, including reporting; and
    • Marketing UP’s research expertise and achievements.
  • Supervise the implementation of advanced research and student systems (e.g., RIMS, Postdoctoral Management).
  • Assume overall responsibility for institutional research reporting, including the annual research report, submission of the University’s research outputs to the DHET and the University’s annual report to the DHET.
  • Lead the development of research capacity through mentorship, training, and support for emerging researchers, postgraduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, with an emphasis on transformation and excellence.
  • Plan, manage and continuously improve the systems, processes, operations, human resources and finances of the Department of Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Education to ensure its effective functioning in support of the University’s strategic objectives.
  • Drive the translation of research into innovative solutions by supporting intellectual property management, commercialisation pathways, and the development of spin-offs, start-ups, and technology transfer initiatives
Minimum Requirements

  • A doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent).
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience of which 5 years should be in a senior academic, research, or innovation leadership role.
  • Proven experience and success in securing large research funding, managing large research portfolios, and fostering strategic partnerships.
  • Proven understanding of higher education, national and international research systems, and intellectual property frameworks.
  • Proven track record of research excellence and innovation leadership, including experience in developing research capacity, fostering inter-disciplinary collaboration, translating research into societal and/or commercial impact and the National System of Innovation.
  • Proven experience in drafting, evaluating, and implementing institutional policies related to research, innovation and postgraduate education.
  • A proven record of success in strategic leadership of new initiatives.

REMUNERATION

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

The Experian Innovation and Strategy team in South Africa spearheads adjacent and unchartered innovation. A key component of this function is fulfilled by the Research and Development (R&D) team. Innovation through data is core to Experian South Africa’s (EZA) strategic objective.

The Head: R&D will be accountable for the identification, assessment and recommendation on potential use cases associated with Alternative data sources. As such, this role will also be responsible for identifying opportunities for Experian to either develop new or expand on existing product offerings. This role will also be supporting and advising other teams within Experian to assess the feasibility and create first conceptual designs for new products.

This role requires particularly strong collaboration traits and a keen understanding of what current market offerings and needs entail. The Head: R&D should be a keen learner, insatiably curious and an instigator of high performance.

Responsibility for adherence to associated Compliance, Risk, Data Governance and Legal processes also rest on this role.

DATA RESEARCH and DEVELOPMENT

  • Identify alternative data sources from what is currently leveraged in the business
  • Identify new types of data (net new) that could be of value to the business, our clients or consumers
  • Facilitate and participate in obtaining samples of such data
  • Guide your team on analysing/investigating the data to assess suitability for new or enhanced products
  • Decide on and communicate outcomes of assessment of data to business

Mintek has an exciting career opportunity for a Principal Scientist within the Mineralogy Division. The incumbent will work to identify suitable research, and provide the information needed to capacitate the Division for future market needs, whether for research or commercial service.   • Assist the Head/Divisional manager in maintaining and expanding project work from themining/ metallurgical industry and related research agencies, in line with the Division’s currentbusiness plans, by providing competence and professional expertise and interacting withclients, collaborators, and potential partners.
  • Ascertain the needs of clients and the industry and propose appropriate project work to enhance visibility and credibility through executing quality presentations and publications.

  • Ensure that the documentation of work and procedures is appropriately captured and produce advanced professional-level reports, publications, and conference contributions.

The Quality Assurance Director will provide compliance leadership and direction to our Company and contract manufacturing operation (CMO) sites that manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), biologics, vaccine drug substances and finished products. As Director, you will support Quality audits and health authority inspections and ensure any resulting corrective and preventative actions (CAPA) are effectively implemented.

Primary Activities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) requirements for vaccine and large molecule manufacturing
  • Partner with our Company and CMO management to identify appropriate CAPA to address findings identified during audits and inspections. Monitor CAPA status and ensure CAPA are implemented in accordance with commitments. Perform independent verification of CAPA implementation and effectiveness to ensure no recurrence of findings
  • Gather regulatory intelligence and partner with our Company and CMO management to prepare sites for audits and inspections. Assists sites during audits and inspections to ensure successful outcomes
  • Monitor and analyze the outcomes of audits and inspections to identify, investigate, and resolve trends. Report results to Divisional and Regional Quality / Management councils
  • Provide guidance and consultation services for regulatory reporting (e.g., BPDR, DPR)
  • Author and / or review global standards and procedures related to biologics, vaccines, and finished product ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Actively participate in industry organizations such as PDA, PQRI, PhRMA, ISPE, etc.

Education and Required Experience :

  • Bachelors degree in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering or related relevant discipline and 10+ years of demonstrated experience within Quality compliance within large molecule manufacturing industry
  • Expert knowledge of GMP requirements for multiple regulatory agencies
  • Expert knowledge of large molecule manufacturing processes (for biologics and / or vaccines) and sterility assurance requirements
  • Ability to accurately interpret and apply regulatory expectations for a robust and compliant QMS
  • Experience in health authority inspections
