The Opportunity:

Our South Africa team is currently looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer experienced on water utility projects to join our dynamic team working on innovative and exciting infrastructure projects in South Africa and globally.

We are looking for a colleague with technical capabilities who is passionate about engineering, people, the environment and providing an excellent service.

You will be involved in delivering projects across the water industry, for water utilities and treatment as well as industrial water systems. You will support our pipeline of feasibility and design projects locally and globally. You will provide key mechanical input to projects and be responsible for supporting and engaging less experienced staff. You will undertake work winning activities and have a desire to build networks within the industry.

Is this role right for you?

  • Mechanical engineering tertiary qualification. Professional registration with ECSA (or other appropriate institution), or willing to pursue professional registration.
  • A demonstrable track record of mechanical engineering feasibility and design in the water utilities industry including water or wastewater treatment and transmission systems.
  • Knowledge of relevant design tools techniques and methods which may include BIM, Plant 3D or other specialist packages.
  • Good knowledge of pumping system design standards and best practice; and good knowledge of mechanical process plant and equipment.

AECOM is looking to employ a Senior Engineer - Hydromechanical

Technical Excellence

Mechanical equipment in water conveyance systems, with an emphasis on dam equipment; gates, control valves; screens hoists, etc. experience critical

Experience in the design of bulk fluid conveyance systems: bulk pipelines, valve chambers, surge mitigation; network distribution systems, pump stations; water treatment plants, etc.

Should understand standard fluid conveyance components, how they work, what their limitations are, and how to use them within a design

Experience with inter-discipline coordination – electrical; instrumental; civil structural, etc. Must be able to have meaningful discussions on a technical level on these disciplines, and defer to discipline leads to make final decisions

Constructability and Safety in Design must be in mind during the design process.

Must be able to have robust discussions with stakeholders, get complex ideas across, discuss critical items with other specialists, and manage other personalities, conflicts, etc, while still guiding the discussion to a meaningful result – a solution for the technical problem.

Must be solution-driven; have a positive outlook; and be able to weather the client’s abuse even when not guilty.

Must have the ability to understand drawings,3D design and do CAD reviews, calculations and be general fluid conveyance excellence track record

Minimum Requirements

8+ Years of Experience

BEng Degree from Recognized University, M -Degree will be preferable

Registered as a Professional Engineer with ECSA

  • Contract Negotiations: Participate in client negotiations to ensure all technical elements are properly addressed and included in final contracts.
  • Design and Design Reviews: Generate and oversee mechanical designs, facilitate design reviews, manage approval processes, and ensure proper configuration control during modifications.
  • Quality Assurance: Participate in quality assurance audits, factory acceptance tests, and receipt inspections to verify that equipment meets technical specifications.
  • Testing and Commissioning: Assist with test procedure development, implement commissioning procedures, facilitate plant performance tests, and participate in HAZOP studies to ensure installations meet design intent.

QUALIFICATION

  • B.Sc or B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering
  • ECSA registration as a Professional Engineer (non-negotiable)

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant work experience
  • At least 5 years of experience in the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) industry

COMPETENCIES

Knowledge

  • Comprehensive understanding of mechanical codes and standards
  • Knowledge of the OHS Act and its Regulations as applicable to Mechanical Disciplines
  • Familiarity with nuclear standards and codes
  • Understanding of ISO, ASME-NQA-1, and IAEA quality systems principles

Key Responsibilities

KRA 1: Lead the development of off-site (wheeling) power projects in South Africa

  • Formulate the decision gating framework for YDE wheeling projects in South Africa suitable for solar, wind, and BESS asset installation
  • Work with current and new land developers to maintain a pipeline of potential project sites
  • Use framework to prioritize project sites based on the needs of the business, MW capacity, interconnection availability, permitting status, etc.
  • Negotiate the acquisition of the preferred sites
  • Work proactively with the business development team to ensure our develop reflects the MW scale, location, and type of power needed by our current and future customers
  • Leverage the capabilities of the Project Management team for the permitting, interconnection agreements, and EPC/O&M arrangements
  • Leverage the capabilities of the Design team for yield and costing of each project site
  • Ensure that all development is future proof considering possible regulation changes
  • Ensure that all development is future proof, and that sites generate the highest returns possible by minimizing the levelized cost of power from each site
  • Take an active role in all relevant negotiations in the development phase including EPCs, advisors’ fees, etc.
  • Identify projects risk, recommend solutions and feedback to executive management.
  • Provide valuation and due diligence guidance to YDE’s CFO and corporate finance team.
  • Actively participate in networking activities, building relationships with potential new customer and identifying opportunities for the business.
  • Acts as the project or market champion within YDE, leading all aspects of the business and project development from the initial stages through order entry
  • When required, hire team members to support responsibilities
  • Provide regular updates on project progress as required by managers and YDE leadership
  • Provide support to annual planning including development budgets and timing of Capital Investments

KRA 2: Ensure all projects are strong investments approved by the IC

  • Work closely with the legal and finance team to ensure all developments are bankable long-term investments
  • Work with the Risk team to develop an Investment Committee package that includes the formal IC paper as well as a presentation to explain the broader benefits and risk of all projects
  • Support Board/IC presentations on the developed projects

KRA 3: Communicate and promote YDE in the South African market

  • Leverages networking opportunities, social media, industry events, and cold outreach to uncover opportunities and turn them into long-term partnerships.
  • Establishes key relationships with industry and thought leaders, creating strategic awareness in the market.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Energy Policy, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
  • 8–10 years of experience in project development within the renewable energy sector (solar, hybrid and/or energy storage).
  • Proven track record in land acquisition, permitting, and interconnection agreements.
  • Strong understanding of South African energy regulations and market trends.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement , including lenders, regulators, and government entities.
  • Financial modeling proficiency , with experience supporting investment committee approvals.
  • Strong negotiation and project management skills.
  • Master’s degree in Business (MBA), Finance, Renewable Energy, or Energy Policy.
  • Experience in wheeling projects and large-scale renewable energy developments.

To manage the lifecycle mechanical integrity of assets across the cluster by regularly reviewing OEM requirements, operating strategies, maintenance programs, and remaining life assessments. The role focuses on optimizing long-term safety, reliability, and efficiency of assets, with a particular emphasis on rotating machinery. Acts as a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) in rotating equipment such as gas and steam turbines, motors, compressors, fans, pumps, and associated systems.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead O&M-related activities for modifications, including design, development, manufacturing, and installation of rotating machinery and mechanical systems.
  • Develop specifications and contribute to bid evaluations and technical reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with OTS, O&M contracts, PPA specifications, and international standards.
  • Review HAZOP/HAZID analyses and manage documentation systems.
  • Support Reliability of Supply (ROS) program implementation and risk register updates.

Maintenance Management

  • Monitor and improve preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Develop CBM strategies and equip site teams with tools and training.
  • Lead condition monitoring analysis and ensure SAP documentation accuracy.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and promote proactive maintenance culture.
  • Manage LTSA relationships and support budgeting and forecasting.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize plant efficiency.
  • Ensure mechanical systems meet availability and reliability targets.

Troubleshooting & Technical Guidance

  • Provide daily support to maintenance and operations teams.
  • Lead RCA efforts and document lessons learned.
  • Conduct performance monitoring and feasibility studies for modifications.
  • Oversee field engineering activities and risk register reviews.

Outage Management

  • Forecast and plan resources for mechanical outages.
  • Support alignment and balancing during outages.
  • Manage inspections and shutdown maintenance in line with OEM recommendations.

Documentation

  • Maintain engineering documentation and records.
  • Ensure proper logging of faults, repairs, and resource usage in SAP.
  • Own and manage the Asset Engineering Risk Register.
  • Contribute to management reporting.

Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE)

  • Ensure compliance with HSSE procedures and controls.
  • Collaborate with HSSE teams on safety enforcement and incident investigations.
  • Conduct risk register reviews and ensure actionable mitigations.

Material Management

  • Support preparation of machinery and spare part requirements.
  • Evaluate procurement quotations and monitor equipment obsolescence.
  • Ensure availability of critical and SPOF spares and manage MEL development.
  • Define storage and preservation requirements for mechanical spares.

Relationship Management

  • Maintain strong relationships with internal teams and external contractors.
  • Liaise with EPCs, OEMs, and LTSA providers for technical guidance and updates.
  • Ensure NOMAC and site teams are informed of equipment changes and risks.

SAP Administration

  • Monitor SAP processes and ensure data integrity in maintenance planning and execution.
  • Adhere to NOMAC’s SAP standards for work orders, notifications, and scheduling.
  • Lead change initiatives and improvement programs across assets.
  • Collaborate with MPC team on performance software actions.
  • Conduct audits and recommend system improvements.
  • Adhere to all relevant organizational policies and procedures.
  • Ensure consistent and high-standard execution of work.
