Key Purpose

The Sponsorship and Experiential Marketing Manager role is an integral part of a team specialising in strategic sponsorships and experiential marketing initiatives. This includes managing and conceptualising cross functional sports and lifestyle events and initiatives, consumer engagements, and other marketing extensions.This position is expected to deliver creative solutions that foster lasting relationships that resonate with consumers and the broader South African community. Responsibilities

To manage and deliver sponsorship & experiential marketing by:

Functioning as a thought leader with significant knowledge of all aspects of sponsorships & experiential marketing, including cutting-edge techniques to engage and excite the consumer.

  • Monitor industry trends, competitive landscape (strengths, weaknesses and opportunities), including digital and social media to inform all existing activity and/or inspire the development of new executions and experiences.
  • Monitor consumers, competitors and culture trends. Listen, learn and mine insights that will direct the brand.

Develop creative strategies as well as seed ideas based on marketing strategy, messaging and objectives.

  • Create conceptual content and deliver it in a compelling way in order to achieve buy in from various stakeholders.
  • Lead integration amongst the various marketing, advertising and PR partners to ensure consistent brand identification and exposure.
  • Provide aesthetic oversight to projects, evaluate and select creative (art and copy) pertaining to the portfolios assets (brand ambassadors’ programme, sports and lifestyle events and initiatives, consumer engagements and other marketing extensions).

360° event/ project management from scheduling to real time execution.

  • Oversee all event, marketing & project planning and estimates for project scope. Manage schedules and resource requirements.
  • Develop and manage assigned project budgets ensuring programmes are properly budgeted, estimated, and scheduled.
  • Develop and manage assigned project plans to ensure milestones are met to a high standard.
  • Proactively direct and manage multiple assignments on time and on budget while always protecting and ensuring the Discovery and Vitality brands are held in the highest regard.

Deliver both internal and client-facing proof of accomplishment.

  • Responsible for overall quality and presentation of project work and effectively developing and communicating marketing strategies and creative standards.
  • Own post-mortem ROI evaluation/project/event follow-ups.

Areas of responsibility will include but are not limited to:

  • Overall brand, sponsorship, project & event management.
  • There is an emphasis on sports-related events, with a particular focus on mass participation events particularly for running and cycling.
  • The role involves possible traveling to various events nationwide, and working hours will vary depending on the specific event schedule. This may require weekend or evening work.
  • A passion and knowledge for all sports is essential as well as knowledge of the sponsorship landscape and industry.
  • Co-ordination of suppliers, and communications to Discovery communities, including social media and PR management.
  • Putting together strategies and business plans, as well as presenting and getting buy from senior leaders is essential.
  • Liaising with advertising agencies, writing and managing creative briefs. Ensuring that briefs are met timeously.
  • Ensuring that events are planned and executed appropriately, as well as dealing with crisis management.
  • Managing the production of print, merchandise and promotional items for sponsorships.
  • Managing procurement and budget control processes.
  • Ensuring that all sponsorship queries are responded to timeously.
  • Monitoring the implementation progress of experiential marketing plans for sponsorships.
  • Production of monthly reports, status reports, project reports and ROI on sponsorships.
  • Managing sponsorship queries and feedback - telephonic and written.
  • Unpacking complex business needs and providing creative solutions considering all stakeholders.
  • Create integrated solutions, which are consistent across all Discovery brands/businesses and communities and which meet best practice marketing and sponsorship principles.

There's no inherited team or roadmap. It's a clean slate with real budget, clear growth targets, executive support, and a leadership seat at the table. You will be supported by a Digital Marketing lead who will join around the same time.

To assume accountability for the direction and market position for a group of sectors (eg oil & gas, infrastructure, financial institutions, HR, etc.) within the CIB business. Develop marketing strategies to deliver business objectives:

  • Develop and implement integrated marketing strategies that enable sectors to compete in the market and grow “sector expertise” awareness levels with clients.
  • Ensure that the marketing strategic plans are implemented and operationalised.
  • Excellent brief writing skills to ensure that marketing briefs into the Group COE have sufficient knowledge on the sector being serviced and clear articulation of the tasks.

Oversee the sector missions:

  • Empower delivery teams/ squads to make decisions and recommend tailored solutions to sector specific problems. Share sector specific knowledge with squad to enable delivery and decision making.
  • Raise the profile, manage the presence of CIB across the various market sectors.

CIB business unit responsibility:

  • Assume responsibility for taking briefs from the relevant business units (on internal events, and communications for assigned and allocated business units. The marketing head will then be responsible for briefing the internal marketing team (events manager / comms head) on needs of BU.
  • Build and sustain relationships to ensure satisfied stakeholders.
  • Create a climate of teamwork and cross-cluster co-operation to enable improved campaign results.

The Senior Manager : Brand (Consumer Segments) is primarily accountable for developing and translating Brand and Marketing Communications Go-to-Market (GTM) plans into actionable blueprints, fully aligned to the broader GTM frameworks owned by Group Consumer functions.

The Senior Manager : Brand (Consumer Segments) holds end-to-end accountability for translating MTN’s brand strategy into actionable, market-ready go-to-market (GTM) plans that directly support business growth and brand equity across consumer segments.

Key responsibilities include :

  • Developing comprehensive Brand and Marcomms GTM strategies for each consumer segment and corresponding product / service category, ensuring full alignment with Group Consumer priorities and market realities.
  • Building robust, segment-specific marketing mix frameworks that integrate product, pricing, distribution, promotion, and customer engagement levers to drive market competitiveness and relevance.
  • Designing precision messaging frameworks mapped to each stage of the customer journey and anchored in MTN’s Brand Strategy messaging matrix. Messaging must connect both functional benefits and emotional triggers to amplify brand desire consistently across markets.
  • Conducting in-depth competitor intelligence and market benchmarking across MTN’s operational footprint, while remaining attuned to global consumer marketing trends that may influence segment expectations and brand positioning.
  • Leveraging multi-source consumer insights, synthesizing both secondary market data and primary research (including Brand Health Tracking Studies and ad-hoc research), to inform and refine GTM design and execution.
  • Driving governance and approvals by preparing and presenting brand playbooks for validation by Group Brand & Marcoms leadership and Group Consumer Executives prior to market deployment through Regional Brand Senior Managers.
  • Establishing clear GTM operating frameworks and cross-functional routines that ensure seamless coordination and alignment across Group Brand, Consumer functions, MANCO stakeholders, and external agency partners.
  • Leading stakeholder mapping and alignment processes to secure buy-in, accountability, and ownership across all functions contributing to GTM success.
  • Developing monitoring and performance management tools (., dashboards) to track playbook implementation, compliance, and market adoption in close partnership with Consumer functions and Regional Brand SMs.
  • Embedding a structured continuous improvement process for playbook updates, revisions, and enhancements, integrating field insights and feedback from Group Consumer teams to maintain ongoing relevance and effectiveness.

Education :

  • Minimum of 4 - year Business / Commercial / Marketing Degree, or equivalent
  • Masters Degree an advantage

Experience :

  • 5 - 8 years of consumer (B2C) segment marketing work experience in a global / multinational business environment (understanding of emerging markets advantageous)
  • 3 - 5 years of experience in a supervisory / managerial role
  • Experience in leading change / transformation (marketing) at an operational level advantageous
  • Experience in continuous improvement through the implementation of best practices
  • Experience in working in a multinational organisation / Group function / other African territories advantageous
