The Verticals Team of IDC Data & Analytics Unit in META is looking for a Senior Research Analyst to support the expansion of its telecom research across META and globally. The focus of the role is around both ongoing syndicated and custom research. The senior analyst will be required to contribute to IDC’s data and analytics products.
Responsibilities
- Collecting data and developing analysis on telecom market spending and business segments to support IDC tracker products within the META region and globally.
- Delivering both quantitative and qualitative research on telecom market with a special focus on both core telecom and ICT / adjacent services.
- Taking full ownership of IDC tracker product(s) and timely delivery of those with impeccable quality.
- Should be willing to travel for business purposes.
- Supporting specific custom consulting projects, based on IDC data and analysis and on desk research from varied publicly available sources, by building data models to meet client needs, or to capture telecom market behavior and trends. Collaborating with IDC research and consulting teams to ensure successful outcome of consulting projects.
- Elaborating written descriptions, charts, presentations, or marketing material from the analysis and present them in webinars, to clients, or at IDC events.
- Developing strong relationships with telecom operators and ICT vendors and improve the visibility and relevance of IDC's research in META and globally.
- Closely collaborating with IDC sales and consultants to help drive business development.
This position calls for someone with experience or interest in working with telecom market research, management consulting, or market intelligence domains, with a good understanding of the broader ICT ecosystem and good exposure to key industry issues and technology developments.She / he has experience in managing datasets, developing sophisticated market models, and formal report writing skills. This role has a data-oriented bias so good data skills will be crucial for the position.
Qualifications
- Strong analytical and data modelling skills. The candidate must possess strong desk research and primary research skills with a strong attitude to identify key business trends based on qualitative analysis.
- At least 3-4 years' experience in telecom market research, or in relevant practice in an ICT market research or consulting firm.
- Should be able to network with people within the telecom / ICT industry and forge industry contacts.
- Outstanding data interpretation and writing skills and being able to provide meaningful recommendations.
- Good time management and planning skills, ability to conduct several projects in parallel, with complex team structures.
- Ability to articulate complex concepts in a synthetic prose.
- Extensive problem-solving skills and positive attitude.
- Advanced knowledge of MS Office packages (especially MS Excel).
- University MA / MSc degree in Business, Economics, or STEM subjects (., Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
- Professional fluency in written and oral English.
- Experience in data modelling and forecasting techniques.
- Candidates with a knowledge of Python / R and Tableau are preferred.

Your Impact
As a knowledge professional you will work alongside our consultants and clients to generate distinctive insights and proprietary knowledge. Your Impact
As a knowledge professional you will work alongside our consultants and clients to generate distinctive insights and proprietary knowledge. You will leverage your knowledge and analytical rigor to develop capabilities, gain insights, and solve specific client business problems, in McKinsey’s Africa Consumer Practice (CPG and Retail).
You will research, analyze, and synthesize key client questions, identifying data, information, and analyses to support problem-solving efforts and targeted industry research, including market developments, competition, corporate strategies, and technology trends. You will present findings through McKinsey-formatted end-products, including models, presentations, and written communications.
You will be able to develop knowledge and help support the continuous improvement of our knowledge assets. You will proactively develop and codify knowledge on new and emerging consumer-based topics relevant to McKinsey and our clients in the industry. You will serve as a thought partner to consulting teams and clients.
You will work in the Johannesburg office as a part of local Africa Capabilities and Insights Team. From time to time, you may be staffed directly on client engagements, which means working closely with our clients and, in some cases, traveling to their sites. Your qualifications and skills

- Play a leading role in drawing up a team business plan for complex tasks as well as plans for longer periods (1 year and 3 year)
- Identify weaknesses in all existing index processes, including data, operational and analytic processes
- Provide specialist guidance to staff who needs to escalate issues of complexity and assist with work of the more junior roles if required

- Drive out process optimisation and enhancement, with the emphasis on providing improved results at a lower cost, reducing the risk of failure or enhancing sustainability
- Maintain an in-depth understanding of the Index landscape, including knowledge of index users’ business, products and services offered by global index providers and local competitors to provide clients with resolutions and advise
- Understand the importance of accurate indices to the capital markets. Maintain this knowledge through continuous self-learning and interaction with market participants
- Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the JSE index rules by knowing which rules to apply in specific situations and taking decisions on the specific application of these rules. This requires interpretation of the applicable rules, referencing historic treatment and precedent set in the past, as well as a detailed understanding of the practical impact of index changes on clients and their investment products
- Independently perform the free float review for JSE listed companies by analysing the shareholders of each company, measuring that against a set of rules and drawing inferences to determine the free float
- Identify upcoming corporate actions and determine the appropriate impact on the indices, within the relevant timeline of that corporate action, by referencing the index rules, previous precedent and making the necessary inferences
- Play a meaningful and leading role in the Index Rebalance by collecting and verifying data; calculating various inputs for the review; determining which changes are necessary, based on the data, rules and calculations; preparation and verification of the relevant public output documentation for accuracy; ensure that the rebalance changes are applied correctly
- Take responsibility for the end-to-end index rebalancing process by ensuring that individual tasks are admitted and correct by supervising and mentoring junior colleagues.
- Provide direction and training to junior colleagues by advising on problem resolution and other questions they might have
- Create insightful research papers by producing research outputs that meet independent Advisory Committee standards and meet identified market needs by researching elements of index methodology or new indices to contribute to the ongoing development of new indices (research includes collecting input data; interpret and analyse data collected; formulate recommendation or conclusions; prepare research papers)
- Identify opportunities to refine existing products and developing of innovative new index products to improve quality and range of data products to clients while being cost effective and sustainable
