Role Overview: We are seeking a skilled Substation Design Engineer with extensive experience in high-voltage (HV) substation design, from initial concept to detailed design. The successful candidate will join Zutari's Transmission and Distribution team, contributing to projects involving international renewable plant grid connections and utility strengthening initiatives, spanning voltages from 11 kV up to 400 kV.

Responsibilities:

• Design transmission and distribution switching stations and substations from 11 kV up to 400 kV.
• Develop SLD, GA, Sections, EarthGrid, Lighting, Lightning, CCTV, Trench, and Conduit layouts for Primary Plant design.
• Compile BOMs, reports, and engineering calculations.
• Interpret standards and implement calculation formulas in Excel.
• Prepare technical specifications and schedules for primary plant equipment.
• Understand and specify all substation equipment, structures, hardware, clamps, busbars, cables, and conductors up to 765 kV.
• Apply basic project management skills.
• Optional: Understand and execute Lightning Protection design in CDEGS, EMF calculations, and modelling, lighting design in Relux and Dialux, and earthing designs in CDEGS.

Requirements:

• B.Eng, B.Sc, or B.Tech in Electrical Engineering.
• At least 5 years of relevant substation primary plant design experience on systems of 132 kV or higher.
• Proficiency in Excel and Word.
• Advantageous skills include MS Projects, CDEGS, CYMCAP, MATHCAD, RELUX, or DIALUX.
• Basic skills in Microstation or AutoCAD.
• Broad knowledge of electrical engineering principles.
• Proficiency in additional languages is highly desirable for working with diverse teams across regions.

As a Senior Substation Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the full lifecycle of substation design – from concept and detailed design to construction support and commissioning. You’ll play a key role in delivering high-voltage infrastructure projects, ensuring technical compliance, safety, and quality standards across the board. The role includes interfacing with clients, contractors, and project teams while mentoring junior engineers and contributing to engineering excellence.

Job Experience & Skills Required:

• BSc/BEng in Electrical Engineering
• 8+ years of experience in HV substation design (up to 132kV or higher)
• Proficiency in design tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, or similar
• Knowledge of relevant utility and industry standards (NRS, IEC, SANS)
• Strong understanding of protection and control systems is an advantage
• Ability to manage multiple design packages and interface with EPCs and utilities
