Job Description

We are looking for a Lead engineer based in Upington responsible for the overall success and execution of renewable energy projects. This includes managing the renewables team, liaising with existing and prospective clients, managing budgets and providing technical support for renewable energy customers in various industries such as Concentrated Solar Plants, PV Plants, Hydro Plants, and Wind Power, Green Hydrogen Plants.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Technical & Engineering Leadership

  • Lead the engineering efforts for renewable related contracts.
  • Develop and implement optimisation strategies for thermal and renewable power systems.
  • Conduct technical reviews and feasibility studies on re-powering and re-purposing projects.
  • Oversee and mentor engineering teams.
  • Interface with clients, EPC contractors, international funders and regulatory bodies.
  • Execute and manage project phases including failure investigations, outage management, reliability improvement initiatives and plant modifications.
  • Ensure compliance with local engineering standards and environmental legislation.
  • Provide input into proposal development and business unit operations as a regional lead.
  • Manage documentation, reporting, and communication of technical work to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide senior mechanical engineering input across multiple renewable and thermal power generation sites.
  • Lead the development and execution of plant modifications, asset performance improvements, and engineering support services.
  • Drive innovation in power plant optimisation, particularly in turbine and generator systems.

Project & Business Unit Management

  • Act as the Northern Cape Business Unit lead, overseeing project execution, client engagement, and contract delivery.
  • Support EPCM activities, including scoping, specification, and interface coordination for plant upgrades or re-purposing projects.
  • Prepare and deliver technical proposals and documentation in response to client requirements.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise with government bodies, international development finance institutions (e.g., World Bank), EPCs, IPPs and technology suppliers.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables meet all local regulatory requirements (PER, SANS 347, Ex-Rating) and company SHEQ standards.

Requirements:

  • BEng Mechanical Engineering
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Power Plant Engineering
  • MSc (in progress/completed) with focus on turbomachinery or renewable systems (advantageous)
  • Registered or eligible for registration with ECSA as a Pr.Eng or Pr.TechEng
  • Minimum 8 years of engineering experience in the power generation sector, with at least 3 in renewable energy project work.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and managing plant systems (e.g., turbines, generators, valves, condensate systems).
  • Strong knowledge of CSP.
  • Prior involvement in EPCM projects or asset performance analysis or digital platform development.
  • Familiarity with compliance and regulatory frameworks including SANS, PER, SHE standards, and Ex compliance.
  • Knowledge on turbines, generators, heat exchangers, engineering finance, project engineering.
  • Deep understanding of turbine – generator systems and power plant operations.
  • Familiar with the maintenance processes for power plants
  • Knowledge of relevant safety and compliance legislation (OHS Act)

Triz Engineering Solutions is looking for a Mechanical Lead Engineer to form part of the senior structure, with the ability to direct and guide design engineers on technical related aspects. He/She should have exceptional organizational leadership skills with the capacity to fit into the DNA of our company culture that is dynamic and embraces change. Triz Engineering Solutions ( is a premium product engineering and development company specializing in end-to-end turn-key commercial vehicle development. We provide end-to-end engineering services for commercial vehicle engineering and development from feasibility and conceptualization, through productionization and service support. Our solutions include zero emissions such as battery electric- and fuel cell- as well as hybrid- or conventional powered products. We also offer solutions for other advanced vehicle technologies such as ADAS, vehicle autonomy and telematics. Our services are turnkey solutions that are validation tested and ready for mass production. Our product development expertise includes medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles in applications such as delivery, bus, motorhome, off highway, refuse and several other specialized and vocational vehicle markets.

1. Objective:

To lead and optimize mechanical design operations at Triz Engineering Solutions, ensuring exceptional project delivery, effective team management, and alignment with customer expectations and industry standards.

2. Requirements:
  • B Eng, B.Sc or B.Tech degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering
  • 7 to 10 years of post-graduate engineering design experience, preferably in the automotive design environment
  • Be willing to travel overseas for variable periods depending on the needs at that time.
3. Key Results Areas (KRAs): Team Leadership and Technical Guidance:
  • Develop and lead a high-performing mechanical design team.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to design engineers.
Customer Interface and Resource Utilization:
  • Interface with customers to understand project requirements and prioritize design resources accordingly.
  • Efficiently delegate tasks to engineering personnel based on project demands.
Project Management and Compliance:
  • Manage project timelines to achieve milestones and communicate proactively about deviations.
  • Ensure designs comply with customer specifications and engineering standards.
Design Reviews and Integration:
  • Organize and lead internal design reviews to validate technical soundness and compliance.
  • Conduct design reviews with customers and suppliers to ensure alignment with project objectives.
CAD Design and Product Data Management (PDM):
  • Execute CAD design tasks, including 3D modeling and creation of 2D drawings.
  • Maintain accurate product data within customer PDM systems.
Production Support and Administrative Excellence:
  • Provide support for custom order engineering requests and prioritize project tasks.
  • Execute administrative duties including performance reviews and documentation.
Team Performance and Development:
  • Achievement of team goals and objectives.
  • Employee satisfaction and professional growth within the team.
Customer Satisfaction and Project Success:
  • Positive feedback from customers on project deliverables.
  • Meeting or exceeding customer expectations on design quality and timelines.
Project Timeliness and Resource Efficiency:
  • Adherence to project schedules and milestone completion.
  • Optimal utilization of design resources to minimize project delays.
Design Quality and Compliance Metrics:

CAD Design Efficiency and Data Management:
  • Timely completion of CAD design tasks with high accuracy.
  • Efficient management of product data within PDM systems.

Working hours:

08h00 – 17h00, Monday to Friday (subject to change) with core hours and flexi time and may require overtime as per project. Leave is based on statutory requirements.
