JOB DESCRIPTION

Our client, a dynamic Greenfields mining operation on the KZN South Coast, is seeking a qualified Safety Officer with a strong background in mining and mineral processing environment safety. The role focuses heavily on safety administration , requiring excellent computer literacy and meticulous record-keeping to maintain zero-harm compliance.

The successful incumbent will monitor safety and ensure statutory compliance across mineral processing plants, crusher plants, vibrating screens, conveyor systems, confined spaces, working-at-height activities etc. You will carry legal responsibility under the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) , coordinating safety inspections, managing incident investigations, and providing expert risk advisory services to the business.

TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Hazards & Risks:

Identify workplace hazards, conduct dynamic risk assessments, and enforce strict compliance protocols.

• Inspections & Audits:

Coordinate routine safety inspections and facilitate both internal and external safety audits.

• Incident Investigations:

Lead incident/accident investigations, conduct formal inquiries, and compile comprehensive MHSA-compliant reports.

• Safety Administration:

Maintain and update the accident control register, safety databases, and corrective action tracking systems.

• System Compliance:

Implement, monitor, and ensure strict adherence to company safety systems, standards, and emergency preparedness programmes.

• Reporting:

Prepare high-quality reports covering safety audits, legal compliance, safety analysis, and statistical trends.

• Training & Advisory:

INHERENT/MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Experience: Minimum of 34 years of operational experience within a mining or heavy mineral processing environment.
• Skills: Good computer skills (MS Office suite) with high administrative competency.
• Legal Knowledge: Good, working knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and its regulations.
• Qualifications: SAMTRAC, a National Diploma in Safety Management, or actively studying towards a relevant qualification (minimum 2nd year completed).
• Certifications: COMSOC 1 and COMSOC 2 are highly advantageous.
• Risk Training: Completed HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment) and/or Operational Risk Management training.
• Education: Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
• General: Valid First Aid Certificate, formal Accident Investigation training, and a valid Drivers Licence.

Main purpose of the job:

To co-ordinate and control all activities pertaining to the effective functioning of the Quality Assurance systems including document control and auditing.

The main function of a quality assurance system administrator is to ensure that the quality management system is implemented and maintained in accordance with relevant quality and food safety standards and regulations, and to ensure that products processed and packed met or exceeds our customers expectation and regulatory requirements whilst continually working towards improving quality and operational efficiency.

This involves:

• Developing and implementing quality policies, procedures and practices to ensure customer, statutory and regulatory requirements are met.
• Establish and maintain the document control system including document version control, change of control and record keeping.
• Assess quality management system by conducting internal audits and identifying areas for improvement.
• Review supplier specifications and customer product specifications to ensure compliance to customer requirements.
• Facilitate and organise training on quality systems and procedures for all levels of staff.
• Monitor and analyse key performance indicators (such as: customer complaints, hygiene audits, redzone and dump, micro non-conformances) to identify trends, risks and opportunities for improvement.

Knowledge:

Food Safety Management Systems i.e. FSSC 22000- Knowledge of Food Safety standards and legislation. Internal Auditing Knowledge of internal auditing processes and practices for food manufacturing environment.

Production and processing - Knowledge of raw materials, production process, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.

Customer and Personal Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessments, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

Fair Cape Specific Processes and Practices -Knowledge of specific job-related internal processes and practices, such as RTM. Customer complaints, Document management, Reporting Systems.

SQA Programmes - Knowledge of required documents from supplier as per Supplier quality assurance programme.

Customer, legal and statuary related requirements pertaining to Dairy and related raw materials and packaging - Knowledge of Raw material handling and risks associated to raw materials. production processes, quality control and Quality Assurance processes.

Skills:

Evaluating Information to Determine Compliance with Standards - Using relevant information and individual judgement to determine whether events or processes comply with processes, regulations, or standards.

Documenting/Recording Information - recording, storing, or maintaining information in written or electronic form.

Auditing Skills - the ability to monitor and recognise out of specification data or control points.

Administration skills - ability to translate information into practical document formats

• Sound knowledge of all applicable health and safety legislation within a manufacturing environment
• Previous experience in a manufacturing environment is essential. Experience within the forestry industry will also be considered
• Strong, assertive personality with the confidence to enforce safety standards, address non-compliance, and challenge management where decisions may compromise safety or legislative compliance
• Experience mentoring, coaching, and developing a Safety Coordinator
• Being qualified to facilitate legislative health and safety training (e.g., Safety Representative Training) would be highly advantageous
• Proven ability to develop and implement SOPs, work instructions, toolbox talks, and other safety documentation
• Hands-on approach with a proven ability to identify issues, implement practical solutions, and take ownership of resolving themnot simply make recommendations

The Security Department requires Security Officers at the Secunda Branch who will be responsible for the below security tasks:

• Ensure access and egress is controlled at all SA Metal property by completing the necessary registers and operating the gates.
