About the role:
Zutari is seeking to hire Principal Engineers to work on multi-disciplinary engineering projects in its water and wastewater treatment team. The roles will be based in Zutari’s Cape Town or Tshwane offices and civil, mechanical, and chemical engineering candidates will be considered.
Responsibilities will include:
Project and engineering management
Building a relationship of trust with clients.
Delivering engineering solutions in your engineering discipline, with a focus on enhancing efficiency through digital information management, workflows and delivery.
Typical engineering work in the water and wastewater treatment field, delivered yourself or via others you supervise:
Complex engineering tasks, investigations, studies, assessments, calculations and analyses.
Water and/or wastewater treatment infrastructure design.
Hydraulic design for water and wastewater treatment.
Preparation of engineering reports
Preparation of tender documentation and associated specifications.
Contract administration and associated quality assurance during construction.
Ensuring timeous and high-quality delivery of project work.
Assistance with guidance and mentoring of a team of engineers, technologists and technicians.
Collaborating with colleagues and clients across multiple engineering and other disciplines and across geographies.
Ensuring that all work complies with Zutari’s quality control procedures and that required quality standards are maintained.
B Eng or BSc (Eng) in Civil engineering, Mechanical engineering, or Chemical engineering.
Registration with ECSA (or equivalent) as a Professional Engineer. In special cases, candidates who are eligible for registration will be considered.
7 or more years of experience in water and wastewater treatment engineering projects. The successful candidate will be appointed to a position and role commensurate with his or her experience.
Willingness to work in a team with the expectation that you will learn as well as share your knowledge with and mentor others.
Strong time management and organisational skills, with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
A valid Code EB driving license (or higher).
A master’s degree in water and/or wastewater treatment or other post-graduate qualification in this field.
Water and/or wastewater treatment process design and optimisation, and a foundational understanding of aquatic chemistry.

Project Management of bulk water conveyance related projects.
Perform complex engineering designs, calculations, and analysis of bulk water pipelines, pump stations, reservoirs, and associated infrastructure across the full lifecycle of the project, i.e., planning, design and implementation which includes construction and completion.
Conduct hydraulic modeling and simulations using industry accepted tools such EPANET, InfoWater, or WaterGEMS.
Co-ordinate and integrate the design with other engineering disciplines (i.e., structural, fire, mechanical and electrical), development of 3D models, technical drawings and details, technical specifications and associated quantities.
Produce other key deliverables on projects such as technical and project related reports, specifications and procurement documentation.
Administration of construction contracts as Contracts EngineerEmployer’s Agent Representative Principal Agent including associated site supervision and administrative responsibilities, and dealing with construction queries.
Be a team player that is willing to collaborate across multiple disciplines and across multiple geographies in Africa and internationally.

Minimum Requirements:
- BSc Eng/BEng in a relevant civil engineering discipline complemented by a relevant postgraduate qualification.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng.) with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
- At least 15 years postgraduate experience in civil engineering.
- Comprehensive project management, quality assurance and project governance experience.
- Effective planning and time management skills.
- Ability to lead, mentor and manage people with strong interpersonal and networking skills.

Role Overview
The Zutari Ground Engineering Team is looking to appoint an Engineering Geologist with knowledge and experience in detailed technical analysis of the ground conditions to join our established, industry-leading team in Tshwane or Cape Town. This position will provide the successful incumbent with a broad range of project opportunities both locally and internationally. The Zutari Ground Engineering Team offers the opportunity to work across a broad range of projects ranging from Energy, Transport, Water, Built Environment, and Resources projects. The Engineering Geologist will join a strong cohort of Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists working closely together in developing solutions.

As an engineering geologist, you will be responsible for geological input in projects and ensure these projects are delivered to the client’s requirements, complying with quality standards, and within the agreed programme and budget.
Role Responsibilities
- Provide a mix of technical delivery and project management but with a significant focus on problem-solving, analysis, and design.
- Liaise with other design disciplines to develop and maintain design coordination.
- Responsible for building and maintaining strong client relationships, both internally and externally.
- Ability to apply new knowledge and deliver and devise new approaches in industry in solving complex ground problems.
- Safety is our priority; the candidate must always adhere to all applicable health and safety standards and practices, on-site and in the office.
- Demonstrate some understanding and importance of compiling safety files before site investigations.
- Travel will be necessary from time to time to projects located in South Africa, other countries in Africa, and the Middle East, as well as other countries.
Qualifications Requirements
- BSc (Hons) degree in Engineering Geology, or equivalent.
- Registration as a Professional Scientist (Pr Sci Nat or equivalent) with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP), or proof the process is underway.
- A post-graduate qualification will be advantageous.
- Membership with the South African Institute for Engineering and Environmental Geologists (SAIEG) will be advantageous.
Experience Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years industry experience.
- Communication and report writing skills are required, along with the ability to work with clients to develop new and existing business opportunities.
- Good knowledge and experience record in delivering geological/geotechnical projects using applicable standards and principles.
- Experience in the application of relevant geological and geotechnical software packages (such as gINT, Leapfrog, Rockscience software, GIS, etc).
- Experience in geotechnical investigations including data gathering, site characterisation, formulating ground models, sampling, analysis of ground conditions and laboratory results, and report writing.
- Skill and experience in geological/geotechnical analysis and providing inputs into design.
- Demonstrate experience of working across multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Demonstrate commercial and project financial awareness, including the preparation of proposals and bid submissions.
- Experience in managing small projects will be advantageous.
- The ability to provide mentoring and technical guidance for younger graduate engineering geologists would be a recommendation.
- Proactive communication skills to work with colleagues and other design teams.
- Ability to communicate confidently and professionally with all levels of staff and clients.

- Specific skills in urban flood modelling and analysis, open channel flow hydraulics, engineering design of flood protection and erosion control measures, stormwater design and master planning.
- Experience in and an appreciation of the importance of nature-based solutions towards improved flood resilience and adaptation.
- An understanding of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) as an engineering design approach which integrates various elements of the urban water cycle.
- Extensive experience in the use of appropriate hydrological and hydraulic modelling (1D and 2D) as well as geospatial analysis software.
- Exposure to other elements of the urban water cycle including water conservation and demand management, non-revenue water, stormwater harvesting, mitigation of climate change impacts and sustainability in an urban water environment.
- Aptitude to implement new digital technologies and tools particularly relating to urban water management, the monitoring of stormwater, flood early warning systems, and flood risk mapping.
- Strong project management skills including financial management, time management, people management and experience of Quality Management Systems (QMS) in a consulting environment.
- Excellent technical report-writing skills.
- Effective planning and time management.
- Working collaboratively within multidisciplinary and culturally diverse teams.
- Managing and mentoring junior staff.
