Overall Purpose of the Role

Zutari's Transport Unit, Transport Planning Section in Tshwane is seeking an Engineer who specialises in Traffic & Transport Engineering to join our Transportation Planning section. This is a great opportunity in Tshwane for an engineering professional looking to move to a dynamic transportation planning environment with a diverse palette of projects.

Key Role Responsibilities

  1. Working with and supporting a team of experienced and specialist Traffic and Transport Engineers.
  2. Technical management of transport engineering projects, which range from small traffic impact assessments through major public transport planning, strategic transport plans (master plans), demand forecast and traffic modelling.
  3. A key requirement will be a strong traffic modelling capability, specifically with the modelling software packages of AIMSUN, VISSIM and VISUM.
  4. Providing primary client liaison in respect of some projects.
  5. Participation in the administration of projects in line with company requirements.
  6. Lead or assist with compiling tenders for any Transport Planning/Traffic Engineering related opportunities.
  7. Contributing to the professional development of junior team members.

Minimum Requirements

  1. BEng/BSc degree in Civil Engineering. A postgraduate engineering qualification would be advantageous.
  2. Professional Engineer registration with ECSA.
  3. Minimum of 10 years’ proven experience in Civil Engineering with a broader interest in Transportation planning and traffic engineering.
  4. Demonstrated ability to independently lead projects in the traffic and transport engineering environment.
  5. Demonstrated ability of developing traffic models in the last five years.
  6. Ability to develop and enhance client relationships.
  7. Ability to work in a team environment across a diverse range of projects.
  8. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.

Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • 5+ years experience with plan preparation procedures and standards
  • 5+ years experience in Transportation
  • Professional Civil Engineering certification (P.E.)
  • Knowledge and experience with Bentley OpenRoads Designer, and other applicable software common to the field of transportation engineering
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills Willingness to work on projects locally or in workshare with other offices
  • Possess a proven history of meeting project deadlines and budgets

Duties & Responsibilities

You will:

  • Provide support and involved with all marketing, business development and management of this specific area of Bridges and Transportation Structures for the business unit.
  • Manage Engineers, Technologists, Technicians and site staff throughout the Planning, Design, Tender, Implementation and Close Out stages of various Bridges and Transportation Structures projects.
  • Responsible for all technical aspects, for Bridges and Transportation Structures, including investigation and design, field assessments, preparation of tender documentation and cost estimates.
  • Preparation of technical reports and design reports.
  • Keeping abreast with technology development and research in the field of Bridges and Transportation Structures.
  • Construction monitoring and implementation of site construction work as and when required, on a part-time or full-time basis.
  • Mentor graduate engineers, technologists and technicians.
  • Maintain regular and continued professional development through on the job training, in-house courses, seminars or outsourced specialist training as required and as agreed.

Achievement of objectives will be measured and reviewed during the annual staff appraisal.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Qualifications

  • BSc / BTech Civil engineering
  • Master's degree in civil engineering would be advantageous.
  • Professional registration as a Pr Eng or Pr Tech
  • COTO Certified Bridge inspector or willingness to obtain certification.

Skills

  • At least 10 years’ experience in the field.
  • Post graduate experience of at least 5-10 years in the design of large Bridges, Freeway interchanges and related transportation structures.
  • Has independently designed bridges and independently assumed a bridge engineer’s role.
  • Familiar with Bridge Design Standards of SANRAL and Local Government Departments.
  • Sound knowledge of both Structural Steel and Reinforced Concrete Bridge Design.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, MS Projects, AutoCAD, CADS RC, Revit, Prokon, Midas and other relevant design software.
  • Extensive experience in the use of NEC, FIDIC, JBCC and GCC contracts advantageous.
