Key Responsibilities
ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE MANAGEMENT
- Enforce compliance with authorizations obtained from Competent Authorities
- Oversee environmental monitoring, review and interpret results and put mitigation measures in place as required
- Put systems in place to implement the requirements of the authorizations on waste management sites
- Undertake and review internal audits of environmental authorisations
- Manage and review external audits of environmental authorisations
- Provide guidance to operational teams regarding environmentally safe and sustainable practices
- Manage consultants appointed to conduct environmental monitoring in line with authorization requirements, included, but not limited to groundwater monitoring, air quality monitoring and dust monitoring:
- Draft and review scopes of work for appointments
- Request and review proposals
- Oversee appointment administration and provide input into contractual agreements
- Guide consultants to provide expected deliverables
- Facilitate site access
- Consolidate, provide and review site information to consultants
- Review and finalize reports
- Oversee budgets and invoicing
- Manage environmental management committee (EMC) requirements:
- Appointing an independent chairperson
- Prepare presentations and present audit report findings, environmental monitoring results and new site developments to EMC
REPORTING AND REVIEWING
- Review reports submitted by consultants and providing comments to consultants
- Provide inputs and compiling information for environmental and other specialist studies related to projects in the division
- Provide inputs into presentations and materials for public participation meetings
- Attend public participation meetings
CONTRACTUAL AND BUDGETARY PLANNING/INPUT
- Manage contracts with consultants
- Ensure alignment with the environmental monitoring and compliance budget and consolidate monthly reconciliations and forecasts
TEAM MANAGEMENT
- Manage Environmental Compliance Officers.
AD HOC
- Any other reasonable ad hoc duty as required or requested by management.
- It should be noted that individuals may need to expand their roles / scope to cover the workload of other employees in times of high workloads or individuals who may be absent from work. This is the sole discretion of management.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- BSc (Hons) Environmental Management or similar
- Environmental consulting, ECO and/or operational waste management experience
- Experience in the waste management related authorisation projects advantageous
- Strong report writing and review skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong communication skills
- Knowledge of environmental legislation
- Knowledge of waste management legislation advantageous
- Valid Driver’s license as travel will be a requirement

MAIN PURPOSE
The Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) Compliance Officer is responsible for ensuring organizational adherence to SHE-related regulatory and certification frameworks, including ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management System), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System), POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act), and PAPIA (Promotion of Access to Information Act). SHE Management System Implementation & Compliance
- Develop, implement, and maintain the SHE management system in alignment with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards, ensuring continuous improvement.
- Monitor and evaluate compliance with OHSA, MHSA, and other relevant local, national, and international regulations.
- Ensure compliance with POPIA and PAPIA regarding SHE-related data and documentation.
- Prepare for and conduct internal and external audits for ISO 14001, ISO 45001, POPIA, and PAPIA certifications.
- Identify non-conformities, implement corrective actions, and ensure continuous certification compliance.
- Conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential health, safety, and environmental hazards.
- Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to maintain compliance with regulatory and certification requirements.
- Investigate and report workplace incidents and near misses, perform root cause analysis, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
