A leading consulting engineering firm is seeking a Civil Engineer - Water Resources to join their Engineering Hydrology Division in Johannesburg.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesHydrology:
The candidate will be required to carry out hydrological analyses focused mainly on, but not limited to:
- Acquisition and processing of hydrological data (rainfall, runoff, evaporation).
- Hydrological parameters (eg, MAP, MAE, MAR).
- Catchment delineation.
- Surface water runoff calculations (eg. MAR, seasonal and dry weather flows, etc.) for site-specific catchment areas.
- Flood peak runoff calculations (applying industry acceptable deterministic, statistical, empirical and dynamic modelling methods).
- Water balance analysis and modelling (principles of conservation of mass, including dam sizing).
- Reservoir and canal routing (dynamic water level analysis).
- Floodline determination.
- Surface water impact assessment.
- Flood risk and flood hazard assessment.
Hydraulics:
The candidate will be required to carry out hydraulic analyses and designs, focused mainly on, but not limited to:
- Water surface backwater profiling (applying the principles to be used in floodline modelling).
- Flood attenuation (whether in reservoirs or upstream of culverts, applying the principles to determine the attenuated volumes, reduced release peak flows, etc.)
- Canal flow (applying hydraulic theory and principles for free surface flow).
- Spillway design (hydraulic design and optimisation with flood routing and attenuation calculations).
- Energy dissipating and erosion control structures.
- Dam break analysis.
- BSc. Eng. (Civil) / BEng. (Civil)
- Preferably a MSc or MEng in Hydrology and Hydraulics
- Around 5 - 7 years experience in relevant work
- Experience in the development and assessment of water balances using GoldSim
Software:
- General: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Projects, AutoCAD (Civil 3D).
- GoldSim, PCSWMM, HEC-RAS, UPFLOOD, WRSM2005, Flo-2D, QGIS/ArcGIS, ModelMaker.
- Programming / coding experience (Visual Basic, Python) will be an advantage.

Develop and apply hydrologic and hydraulic models (e.g., WEAP, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SWAT, MIKE HYDRO Basin).
Analyze precipitation, streamflow, groundwater, and climate data to support water resource planning.
Provide expert input on flood risk, stormwater management, and drought mitigation strategies.
Collaborate with engineers, ecologists, planners, and government agencies on multidisciplinary projects.
Mentor junior hydrologists and review technical work for accuracy and quality.
Support stakeholder engagement and public consultation processes.
Stay current with emerging trends in hydrology, climate science, and water policy.
BSc, preferably MSc degree in Hydrology.
Registration as a Pr. Sci. Nat or equivalent
At least 5 years postgraduate experience in hydrological assessment
Familiarity with integrated water resource management (IWRM) principles
Effective planning and time management skills.
Ability to lead, mentor and manage people and have strong inter-personal and networking skills.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
