Requirements:
  • BSc Eng (civil) / BEng (civil)
  • Preferably MSc or MEng in Hydrology and Hydraulics
  • 5 to 7 years relevant experience aligned with the responsibilities listed below

  • Acquisition and processing of hydrological data (rainfall, runoff, evaporation)
  • Hydrological parameters (e.g., MAP, MAE, MAR)
  • Catchment delineation
  • Surface water runoff calculations (e.g., MAR, seasonal and dry weather flows) for site-specific catchment areas
  • Flood peak runoff calculations (applying industry-acceptable deterministic, statistical, empirical, and dynamic modelling methods)
  • Water balance analysis and modelling (principles of conservation of mass, including dam sizing)
  • Reservoir and canal routing (dynamic water level analysis)
  • Floodline determination
  • Surface water impact assessment
  • Flood risk and flood hazard assessment

Hydraulics:
Carry out hydraulic analyses and designs focused mainly on, but not limited to:
  • Water surface backwater profiling (applying the principles to be used in floodline modelling)
  • Flood attenuation (whether in reservoirs or upstream of culverts, applying the principles to determine attenuated volumes, reduced release peak flows, etc.)

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in Infrastructure Asset Management, preferably within the municipal/public sector.
  • Experience in asset verification, valuation (CRC/DRC), unbundling, and AMP development.
  • Familiarity with audit processes.
  • Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to project sites nationally.

Work Conditions

Hybrid office and site-based role. Extended fieldwork may be required during verification and AMP development phases.

National travel across South Africa is expected.

  • Site Experience:

  • Construction of steel and concrete structures

  • Practical understanding of plant safety and best engineering practice

  • Review Quality Control Plans

  • Site inspections (Pre-pour, post-concrete, snaglists, etc.)

  • Review and take responsibility of Civil Contractor's Quality Control Files and final sign-off

  • Understanding of construction methods;

  • Preliminary concrete and structural steel design;
  • Project design and construction scheduling;
  • Cost estimating during tender phase by compiling a BoQ and liaising with the tender manager for turn-key cost submission;
  • Contract administration and compilation of an NEC3 contract with civil service providers;
  • Project Engineering duties ;
  • Exceptional understanding of SANS, mining codes and environmental regulations ;
  • Leading civil design to comply with process and mechanical requirements, while still be cost-effective and can be rapidly executed;
  • Mentoring junior/graduate engineers;
  • Taking responsibility for the civil design and execution, and making critical decisions ;
  • Effectively communicating complex technical concepts to clients, contractors, and other stakeholders, both verbally and in writing;
  • Identifying and analyzing technical issues, proposing creative and cost-saving solutions and designs, managing the design team and building contractors

3. Key responsibilities

  • Attend tender briefings, prepare tender documentation, write method statements, assist with preliminary civil designs and pricing calculations, contribute to business development and tender processes as and when required;
  • Facilitate and assist with the tender, evaluation and adjudication process leading up to contractor appointment and site handover;
  • Ensure effective communication with the project team;
  • Comply with Quality Control procedures by ensuring auditable trail of actions during full life cycle of project delivery process all in accordance with company quality management procedures;
  • Comply with company procedures and processes in terms of projects registration, risk analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and invoicing;
  • Confirm adherence to construction specifications and safety standards by monitoring project progress, inspecting construction site, and verifying calculations and placements;
  • Supervise network analysis to ensure that work is performed to standard;
  • Ensure that the project schedule is developed in line with the client requirements and approved by the client;
  • Participate in continuous professional development training to maintain professional registration;
  • Produces engineering documents by developing construction specifications, plans, and schedules.;
  • Maintains operations by enforcing project and operational policies and procedures ;
  • Provide detailed discipline engineering information by answering questions and requests to lead the team to the best practical solution;
  • Maintains project database by writing computer programs, entering data, and completing backups;
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed;
  • Travel between sites.
