Zutari is seeking a professionally registered Mechanical Engineer who will manage the design and project management of hydropower, hydromechanical systems and related infrastructure.

The engineer will work closely with other senior engineers, junior engineers, technologists, and technicians in developing innovative solutions and delivering high quality outputs for our clients.

Role Responsibilities

  1. Develop and undertake detailed designs for run-of-the-river, conventional and pumped storage hydropower schemes
  2. Support the growth of our Dams & Hydropower business through client relationships and preparation of proposals
  3. Hydraulic design of closed conduit conveyance systems such as penstocks
  4. Detailed design of mechanical infrastructure and equipment selection
  5. Develop and undertake detailed design of pump systems for bulk water infrastructure
  6. Project management of small projects and acting as work package/task lead on small to medium sized projects
  7. Manage, train and mentor young engineers
  8. Coordinate and manage the development of 3D digital models and associated 2D drawings for mechanical and civil infrastructure
  9. Work closely with other business units within Zutari such as the renewable energy and electrical teams
  10. Co-ordinate with other disciplines such as electrical, civil, structural and process
  11. Work closely with technicians, technologists and engineers
  12. Attend site visits for familiarisation and high-level surveying or observation of brownfields infrastructure and greenfield projects
  13. Interpret engineering design sketches and drawings
  14. Interpret as-built drawings of brownfields infrastructure
  15. Managing and reviewing the quality of deliverables with a specific focus on the compilation of professional reports

Minimum Qualifications

  • BSc/BEng in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer OR evidence of application submission
  • Minimum of 6 years experience, preferably within water infrastructure projects
  • Experience in digital modelling would be an advantage
  • Previous experience in the dams, hydropower or bulk water industry (bulk conveyance, pump stations) would be an advantage
  • A willingness to learn and continue building an established mechanical team
  • A strong interest in working on innovative and complex projects

The Mechanical Engineer role is embedded within the Projects & Engineering team of Fives Services Mzansi, contributing to the broader mission of delivering high-performance solutions for the aluminium industry. This includes supporting the lifecycle of equipment and systems used in primary aluminium production, particularly in the carbon and electrolysis sectors.

With operations in over eight countries, the division provides turnkey solutions and advanced technologies for emission control, material handling, and process optimization.

The Mechanical Engineer will play a key role in aligning local engineering efforts with global standards and innovations developed by Fives’ international teams, particularly those based in France.

This role is critical in ensuring seamless integration between Fives Services Mzansi and the global Fives Aluminium network, enabling the delivery of world-class engineering solutions tailored to the needs of the Southern African market.

Primary Purpose

The Mechanical Engineer plays a critical role within the Projects & Engineering team, supporting the FIVES Group Services organization. This position is responsible for ensuring engineering excellence through the development of CAD drawings, 3D, mechanical calculations, and compliance with international and local standards. The role also serves as a key interface between FIVES Services South Africa and the FIVES Head Office in France, particularly in managing engineering data and systems such as SAP R3 and SAP B1.

Accountabilities

Engineering Systems & SAP Management

  • Manage and maintain Bills of Materials (BOM) using SAP B1 and SAP R3.
  • Create and update FIVES item codes, ensuring compliance with internal architecture and standards.
  • Extract and analyze technical data from SAP and AS400 systems.
  • Support other departments by providing accurate BOM-related data.


CAD Design & Drafting

  • Operate CAD hardware and software proficiently, including Autodesk Inventor and SolidWorks.
  • Produce detailed 2D and 3D drawings from general arrangements, hand sketches, and specifications.
  • Apply efficient drafting methodologies and maintain drawing standards and layers.
  • Develop and implement CAD drafting standards in line with ISO 9001.


Mechanical Design & Calculations

  • Perform load calculations for mechanical assemblies.
  • Prepare documentation packages for mechanical certification.
  • Apply knowledge of mechanical tolerances and material specifications.
  • Review and approve technical drawings to ensure accuracy and compliance before manufacturing


Stakeholder Interfaces

  • Collaborate with clients to understand technical requirements and provide engineering solutions.
  • Conduct site visits to assess mechanical systems and provide recommendations.
  • Liaise with the FIVES France Head Office to align on engineering solutions.
  • Coordinate with workshops and suppliers to ensure fabrication aligns with engineering specifications.
  • Support the Local Product Expert in the development of innovative solutions and services tailored to client needs.


Health, Safety, Environment & Quality (HSEQ)

  • Adhere to all HSEQ Management System requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993).

Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Overseeing end-to-end execution of turnkey projects.
  2. Implementing and maintaining efficient workflow organization within the factory.
  3. Generating quotations and assessing job costings.
  4. Designing parts and components.
  5. Ensuring strict adherence to company policies and procedures.
  6. Conducting necessary site visits as part of project requirements.
Skills & Experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a Mechanical engineering environment.
  • AutoCAD essential and SolidWorks advantageous.
  • Innovative and pro-active individual.
  • Perform well under pressured environment.
Qualification

BTech or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.

Only South African Residents or individuals with a relevant South African work permit will be considered.
