What will you do?
As a Senior Consultant with expertise in risk management, safety management systems development, and process improvement implementation you will be trusted to lead projects in Operational Risk Management transformation programs. You will help clients design and implement solutions that help senior executives manage operational risks on the shop floor and process lines and ensure sustainable business performance, with the purpose of not just protecting asset value but also extracting and creating value. You will be responsible for identifying, designing, and implementing effective solutions and must be equally conversant with senior executives and process line supervisors. You will feel comfortable working through a client’s value chain, develop risk scenarios, identify and propose risk mitigation strategies, and link operational risk management outcomes to client’s business performance and their business plan.
This position will enable you to demonstrate your ability to see operational risk challenges across the entire value chain, as well as be able to dive into technical details of processes and systems. More specifically, you would
Drive the design and execution of consulting engagements in operational risk management to help clients protect, extract, and create value in their assets, be outcome-focused and ensure client requirements are not only met but exceeded. This includes:
Work closely with senior executives to understand their business challenges, identify risk scenarios that impact their business goals and performance and link business performance to the organization’s operational risks.
Work across the client’s business portfolio and value chain, while determining when and how to deep dive into technical operations on the process line or shop floor to better manage operational risks and enhance the client’s business value.
Communicate and coordinate effectively across diverse client stakeholders, including the client business ecosystem.
Identify proactively issues and risks in relation to the specific delivery activities and liaise with the wider project team to evaluate potential solutions and pursue the optimal course of actions to minimize adverse impact and maximize project success; and,
Build and implement client solutions that fit client culture, business environment and improves client business performance.
Lead operational risk management proposals and provide expertise as part of proposal development and support to other team members.
Thought leader and creative thinker in operational risk management with the ability to create new risk methodologies and approaches.
Play an active role in building the firm:
Participate and contribute to functional and/or industry networks with the aim of developing and sharing best practices.
Be a thought leader in operational risk management and help build firm capability; and
Provide feedback and coaching to junior colleagues to support their development within dss+.
Who are you?
To be successful in this position, you would bring the following qualifications:
Strong knowledge and practical experience in application / facilitation of a wide range of risk analysis and risk management techniques.
Knowledge and practical experience in business planning and developing risk scenarios based on business plans and operations.
Broad understanding of operational risk management and how different management and operations elements are linked together.
Ability to effectively deliver training and coaching sessions to senior executives to build/strengthen capabilities.
Experience along the entire lifecycle of an asset, from concept, design/build, operations/maintenance, modification and asset retirement.
Effective leadership skills to drive project execution in complex environments.
Proven track record in relevant highly-hazard/heavy manufacturing industries such oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical, metal processing, etc.
Qualifications / Requirements:
BS/BA in engineering or equivalent, MBA or MSc preferred, with a minimum of 15 years’ experience.
Considered a Subject Matter Expert in Operational Risk Management with extensive experience in one or more of our core industries
Exceptional interpersonal skills and team-working attitude to work in fast-paced, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams.
Fluency in both written and spoken English
Ability to travel extensively (approximately 80% of the time).

POSITION INFO:
The Process Safety Design Engineer is responsible for developing and integrating process safety strategies and engineering solutions into facility designs, ensuring compliance with international safety standards and reducing operational risk across oil & gas facilities. This role involves working across multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective engineering solutions in both greenfield and brownfield projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and support process safety design activities across project lifecycle stages (conceptual, FEED, detailed design).
- Conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), including HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL studies.
- Develop and maintain safety documentation including Bow-Tie diagrams, safety philosophies, Cause & Effect charts, and fire & explosion risk assessments (FERA).
- Design and specify safety systems such as ESD, fire and gas detection, relief systems, and pressure protection devices.
- Perform quantitative risk assessments (QRA), dispersion modeling, and consequence analysis.
- Ensure designs meet local and international codes and standards (API, IEC, NFPA, ISO, OSHA, etc.).
- Support development and review of Safety Cases, SIMOPS plans, and emergency response plans.
- Interface with process, piping, instrumentation, mechanical and civil engineers for integrated safety solutions.
- Participate in design reviews (3D model reviews, P&ID reviews, constructability and operability reviews).
- Provide technical input to procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational teams.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field.
- Postgraduate training in Process Safety Engineering (preferred).
- Professional Engineering Registration (e.g., PrEng, CEng, PE) is advantageous.
- Strong knowledge of process safety design principles and risk assessment techniques.
- Proficiency in process simulation tools and safety analysis software (e.g., PHAST, PIPENET, DNV GL, PHA-Pro).
- Familiarity with international oil & gas safety regulations and standards.
- Ability to interpret and develop PFDs, P&IDs, and engineering drawings.
- Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and report writing skills.
- Highly analytical with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Attention to detail with a commitment to operational integrity and safety.
- 5–10 years of experience in process safety and risk management within the oil & gas, petrochemical, or energy sector.

Experience and Requirements:
· 5 Years applicable experience in a Safety environment and 2 years in Construction.
· Enforcement of Safety and Health according to the OHS Act No 85 of 1993
· Implementation of SHERQ Fatality Prevention Standards (FPS)
· Attend, arrange and chair where necessary, SHERQ, Site, meetings
· Ensure Contractors adherence to the safety specification through regular audits, inspections and discussions with Contractors.
· Compile and manage the safety file for the project
· Assist the contractors to compile safety files
· Updating weekly and monthly safety reports
· Do plant inspections
· Understand requirements of project Health and Safety plan to ensure project Health and Safety Plan and company Health and Safety Management System is implemented on project site
· Perform/facilitate preparation, review and modifications of risk assessments as required, for all project activities
· Maintain accident/incident record for on-site and off-site accidents related to project employees, vehicles, assist project personnel for preparing first information report
· Ensure regular inspections of tools, equipment and vehicles are performed, deficiencies corrected, and record maintained using appropriate forms
· Arrange and conduct emergency drills fir identified emergencies on project
· Ensure work area environment is maintained safe through the proactive enforcement of Health and Safety rules and regulations
· Ensure subcontractors are aware and comply with Health and Safety rules and regulations on site
· Participate in audits and ensure follow up and closeout of corrective actions for the findings raised during internal and external audits
· Assist Project Health and Safety Specialist in organizing and facilitating project Health and Safety meetings to review Health and Safety performance as necessary and participate in client meeting as request.

- Experience: Minimum 10 years of consulting engineering experience, with at least 5 years post-registration as a professional engineer. IntroductionArcelorMittal South Africa is looking to recruit 3 x Safety Engineers
- Maintain and apply knowledge of current health and safety policies, regulations, and industrial processes and review plans and specifications of new/existing machinery and equipment to ensure they meet safety standards.
- Identify and correct potential hazards by inspecting facilities, machinery, and safety equipment and evaluate various industrial control mechanisms’ effectiveness.
- Ensure that plants comply with health and safety regulations, paying careful attention after conducting an inspection that requires changes.
- Direct and oversee the installation of safety devices on machinery, and review employee safety programs, recommending necessary improvements as needed.
- Lead Plant teams in analysing High Risk Areas and compile HIRA as well as mitigating actions.
- Perform audits and report the effectiveness of the system safety program.
- Ability to develop schedules, manage projects and complete work according to the developed schedule.
- Brief relevant stakeholders as part of the l reviews of the safety approval process.
- Support incident investigations with the plant, determine root cause analysis and drive corrective actions, until incident closure.
- Focus on Safety Risks and Mitigations towards closing the loops and possible re-engineering risks out of the system,
- Work with production and maintenance procedures to assure the proper administrative controls are in place.
- Work across all integrated teams to properly eliminate hazards or provide effective controls.
- Implement occupational safety programs and serve as health and safety interface with business.
- Maintains, analyse and monitors KPI’s and progress.
- Provide coaching and training for manager on safety KPI’s.

- Drive Risk Management and inform GM of progress and issues for support:
- PSIF’s – Pro-Actively hinting in area, mitigate, close Loop and verify,
- Oversee the HIRA Champion of Area- Ensure proper HIRA’s are conducted,
- Must obtain / should have excellent technical competencies in electricity, (e.g., being able to read and explain a electric block diagram), mechanics, basic thermodynamics, basic chemistry and materials science, and basic automation.
