Overview

Head: Media Relations and Issues Management is a senior leadership role that reports to the Managing Executive Group Communications. The role is responsible for setting, enabling and driving the organisation’s media engagement strategy and managing reputational risk through proactive and reactive communications. It aims to position the organisation positively in the public domain, build trusted media relationships, and lead strategic responses to complex issues and crises. The role drives functional strategy integration and sets standards for media relations.

Responsibilities
  • Accountability: Develop and implement the Media Relations and Issues Management Strategy. Develop and execute communications strategies that support the Absa Group strategy; the CEO Office; the AGL Exco and Board – including tactical communications in line with business operations and reputation management issues, as well as proactive communications to position these stakeholders in line with the corporate ambition and in partnership with Group Public Relations.
  • Provide strategic, issue and crisis communication advice (reputation management) including scanning (communication, customer and environmental insights) and issues identification, monitoring, and redress.
  • Accountability: Thought leadership creation and positioning for key stakeholders. Work with Group Public Relations and Corporate Communications to position Absa Group, the CEO and the Group leadership in the market, in line with the Group strategy. Represent the Group on relevant industry bodies to influence the landscape of communications practice on the African continent.
  • Accountability: Sharing of insights and best practice; educate internal stakeholders on strategic media relations. Maintain up-to-date understanding of competitor media relations activity to keep leadership informed of market activity and opportunities. Provide thought leadership to Corporate Affairs teams and communications practitioners across the Group.
  • Accountability: Creation and oversight of the Media Governance Framework. Design and implementation of Absa’s media relations policy, standards, strategy, framework and governance oversight. Develop and embed a differentiated, robust group-wide media relations capability and data-driven insights for proactive and reactive media responses. Provide Media Relations subject matter expertise and advisory to business and key stakeholders.
  • Accountability: Control measures. Understand and apply risk controls, complete mandatory training on time, manage risks and controls, escalate and address incidents to prevent recurrence.
  • Accountability: People Management. Develop and sustain a high-performing team, establish a succession plan, and manage coaching, development, performance and engagement.

  • 10+ years of strong communications experience
  • 8 years in a multinational corporate communications environment

Key Accountabilities:

Accountability: Develop and Implement the Media Relations and Issues Management Strategy
  • Develop and execute communications strategies that support the Absa Group strategy; the CEO Office; the AGL Exco and Board – this includes both tactical communications in line with business operations and reputation management issues, as well as proactive communications to effectively position these stakeholders in line with the corporate ambition and in partnership with Group Public Relations.
  • Provide strategic, issue and crisis communication advice (reputation management) - including formal and informal scanning (communication, customer and environmental insights) and issues identification, monitoring, and redress.
Accountability:Thought leadership creation and positioning for key stakeholders
  • Working closely with Group Public Relations and Corporate Communications to develop communications initiatives that will effectively position Absa Group, the CEO and the Group leadership in the market, in line with the respective focus areas as outlined in the Group strategy.
  • Represent the Group on relevant industry bodies, to influence and shape the landscape of communications practice on the African continent.
Accountability:Sharing of insights and best practice/ educating internal stakeholders on strategic media relations
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of competitor media relations/PR/thought leadership activity – to ensure Group Communications and Corporate Affairs leadership are kept abreast of market activity and opportunities to enhance the Group’s voice and distinctiveness in the market.
  • Provide thought leadership to the Corporate Affairs teams, as well as communications practitioners across the Group – to ensure the community is equipped to effectively deliver world class communications activity (innovation, new methods, new channels etc.)
Accountability: Creation and Oversight of the Media Governance Framework
  • Design and implementation of Absa’s media relations policy, standards, strategy, framework and governance oversight.
  • Develop and embed a differentiated, robust and consistent group-wide media relations expertise that utilises best-in-class approaches and embeds Absa’s desired media relations framework and approach.
  • Design and implement robust media data analysis and insights generation to facilitate data-driven proactive and reactive media responses using strategic intelligence
  • Provide Media Relations subject matter expertise and advisory to business and key stakeholders in support of the Group Communications strategy
Accountability: Control measures
  • Understand the control measures applicable to the role through reading the Code of Conduct and other training allocated. Where responsible for risks and controls ensure that these are appropriate and fit for purpose.
  • All mandatory training completed to deadline and understood within given timescales.
  • Where applicable, all key risks identified, tracked, logged and managed as per the Risk Framework procedures.

Position Overview:

Are you a storytelling, visually driven marketer who thrives on bringing brands to life through video? Do you have a knack for producing scroll-stopping, high-quality content that makes people stop mid-feed and say, “I want to be there”?

The Springs Resort, the #1 Hot Springs & Spa Resort destination as voted by USA TODAY, is looking for an experienced and passionate Social Media Specialist to lead our video-forward content creation across social media, Meta ads, website, and other marketing channels. This is a hands-on creative role: shooting, editing, strategizing, while also engaging directly with our online audience and supporting the marketing team with campaigns, special events, and day-to-day needs. You’ll report to the Marketing Manager and help tell a brand story people can feel.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Location: On-site position at The Springs Resort, Pagosa Springs, CO
  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday with occasional evening/weekend work during on-property events for content needs. Weekend and Holiday comment and engagement monitoring.
  • Work Split: 50% field work (shooting content around resort), 50% office-based editing and strategy
  • Team Environment: Join a collaborative 3-person marketing team in a creative, fast-paced setting

Video-Forward Content Creation:

  • Concept, film, and edit short-form videos for TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook.
  • Develop and adapt creative ads for Meta, testing and optimizing them to meet campaign goals.
  • Capture authentic, in-the-moment resort experiences through both planned shoots and agile, on-the-fly content creation.
  • Repurpose video for multiple channels, including email, website, and print.
  • Plan and execute a monthly content marketing plan & strategy, focused on achieving monthly KPIs.
  • Set short-term goals for content initiatives to align with the resort's branding and marketing objectives.
  • Undertake content marketing initiatives to achieve business targets, covering content conception to completion.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to produce high-quality content, emphasizing the resort experience and offerings.
  • Strategize robust content generation plans and tactics for resort events and activities.

Content Curation:

  • Maintain an organized content management system for various content pieces, including photos.
  • Curate and deliver engaging, high-quality content regularly for various social platforms, including social media.
  • Use effective copywriting practices, including drafting, editing, proofreading, and updating written content.

Multimedia Production:

  • Align web, social, video, and print content for consistency and quality.
  • Prepare content for various channels, ensuring a strong web presence and utilizing light media editing and graphic design skills for photo, video, and graphic content.
  • Manage professional photography, video shoots, and deliverables to capture the essence of the resort experience.

Social Media Management:

  • Achieve organic social media metrics for growth, managing and strategizing social media platforms to enhance the resort's online presence.
  • Monitor and respond to comments, messages, and tags to foster guest relationships and maintain a positive brand presence.
  • Stay ahead of trends, platform updates, and competitor activity to keep content fresh and engaging.

Collaboration and Coordination:

  • Collaborate with marketing, resort teams, and event teams to align content creation with broader business goals.
  • Work closely with influencers and partners to amplify the resort's presence in the digital space.

Influencer Partnerships:

  • Identify, vet, and manage relationships with influencers and content creators who align with our brand.
  • Coordinate visits, content deliverables, and cross-promotion opportunities.
  • Track influencer performance and integrate their content into broader campaigns.

Branding:

  • Ensure consistent branding across all content channels and materials to maintain a cohesive and recognizable brand identity.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, or a related field OR proven experience as a Content Manager or similar role.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated social media management with a portfolio showing follower growth and engagement
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • Proficient in multimedia production tools, graphic design, and video editing software (Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro).
  • Up-to-date with industry trends and tools.
  • Experience with social media management and analytics tools.
  • Familiarity with SEO best practices.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Skilled in website CMS platforms like WordPress, able to edit templates, create new pages, and add optimized content.
  • 2+ years of experience with team and task management.

  2. Resume highlighting relevant social media and content creation experience.
  3. Cover Letter explaining why you would be a good fit for the position.
  4. References: 3 professional references from previous marketing/social media roles.
