Minimum Requirements

HPCSA Registered Medical Technologist Cytogenetics OR HPCSA Medical Scientist

  • 2 years experience in Human Cytogenetics
  • Understanding of Blood Transfusion Standards
  • Understanding of HPCSA regulations
  • Understanding of SANAS regulations and audit process
  • Experience with SAP and Meditech
Special Circumstances
  • Out of hours transport necessary
  • Overtime as and when required
  • National Travel if required
  • Proficient eyesight and reasonable mobility

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs and analyses laboratory samples in order to provide results for medical practitioners to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases.

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Performs diagnostic testing procedures, reviews and verifies results and interacts with pathologists on technical matters to provide all relevant data that may pertain to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of diseases.
  2. Operates, maintains and calibrates the equipment used in the laboratory to ensure that it is operating efficiently and providing accurate results. This includes recording instrument maintenance and quality control results as well as recognising and resolving problems by troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment and taking corrective action.
  3. Implements sound housekeeping procedures and works effectively with others as a member of a team to ensure a safe working environment in accordance with safety protocols. This includes the ongoing maintenance of quality control standards, adherence to infection control measures, correct disposal of bio-hazardous waste, and participation (as per delegated responsibilities) in the preparation process for internal and external audits.
  4. Reports incidents, including instrument failures, problem solutions and reads documents and actions tasks on the laboratory information management system in compliance with relevant organisational policy.
  5. Attends training and seminars and participates in continuing professional development (CPD) activities to continuously update knowledge and skills as well as comply with professional registration requirements. This includes ensuring the availability of up-to-date records that can be presented immediately on request thereof.
  6. Performs on-site training of laboratory staff, interns, students, medical colleagues, and associated health workers in laboratory techniques, processes and systems, if assigned by laboratory manager and deemed competent.
  7. Adheres to professional conduct requirements in line with organisational policy and relevant professional body ethical standards.
  8. Represents the organisation by applying the principles of customer care in the medical pathology field and interacts professionally and ethically with patients, clients, doctors, and other hospital staff.
Desired Experience & Qualification

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12
  • National diploma in Biomedical Technology
  • Registration in relevant discipline with HPCSA

  • JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety measures at all times.

    • Perform preventive equipment maintenance as scheduled.
    • Record temperature readings and equipment maintenance daily in accordance with SOPs, ensuring documents are accessible and retrievable.
    • Maintain compliance with laboratory Turnaround Time (TAT) and uphold the standard daily.
    • Manage stock control on the bench, receive samples, and determine if samples are acceptable for further analysis.
    • Perform tests following SOPs.
    • Verify test results.
    • Understand the physical and chemical principles of various analyses performed.
    • Complete corrective action and troubleshooting logs for QC and equipment failures.
    • Run Instrument Quality Controls (IQC) and External Quality Assessment (EQA).
    • Record Non-Compliance (NC) and customer complaints.
    • Manage overdue and pending actions.
    • Identify results outside expected findings or reference ranges and report abnormal results as per SOP.
    • Perform data checks according to SOP.
    • Comply with professional conduct standards established by the organization and professional bodies.
    • Address Uncertainty of Measurement, Inter-Lab Comparisons, and Validations.
    • Participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :

    Diploma : Biomedical Technology / Bachelor of Health Science: National Laboratory Science / NQF level 6 or 7

    Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Technologist in Clinical Pathology

    Experience: Min 0 - 5 years

    REQUIRED SKILLS :

    • Strong analytical and documentation skills.
    • Broad knowledge of basic laboratory techniques.
    • Previous experience in a laboratory or medical setting.
    • Comfortable using medical technologies and laboratory equipment.
    • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
