Maintenance Fitter

Our client in the automotive manufacturing industry is seeking a Qualified Artisan Fitter to join their team.

Job Type: Permanent

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Carry out maintenance functions to ensure that the machines and factory remain well looked after
• Maintenance checks on chillers, cooling towers and compressor
• Repairs, maintenance alterations when required or requested
• Welding and fabrication of new equipment and machinery
• Documented weekly checklists to be filled in
• Comply with PPE requirements
• Report any detected health and safety concerns immediately
• Factory running efficiently and effectively because of a highly maintained factory
• Continuously try to seek out methods to help preventative maintenance be a solution to root

Minimum Requirements:

• Qualified Fitter (Red Seal/ Trade Test)
• Minimum 3-5 years post qualification experience
• Experience in a maintenance environment within a manufacturing company
• Experience in steel fabrication and sketch up own design
• Arc welding experience
• Ability to work as part of a team as well as individually
• Hydraulic experienced (Read and interpret drawings)
• Injection moulding experience advantageous

• Diagnose the root cause of equipment failures and implement corrective actions swiftly.
• Minimize downtime by quickly addressing faults, defects, and failures.
• Ensure equipment operates optimally through the application of relevant technical and engineering practices.
• Collaborate with Production to identify and resolve potential issues proactively.
• Provide regular reports to the Toolroom Foreman, documenting repairs, downtime, and maintenance activities.

• Perform initial inspections for all process changes to assess equipment condition.
• Conduct routine inspections to detect potential failures or excessive wear, and perform necessary maintenance.
• Periodically inspect manufactured products to ensure they meet quality standards.
• Work with Supervisors and Production to schedule preventative maintenance.
• Ensure parts are available for maintenance routines and report any unusual conditions.

• Assist in training apprentices to ensure they gain the necessary skills for maintenance and repair work.
• Prepare machines and equipment for apprentice training sessions.

• Operate in compliance with all relevant regulations and procedures to maintain the integrity of the maintenance process.
• Report any risks or concerns to management within your area of responsibility.
• Promote compliance with procedures to minimize wasteful and irregular expenditure.

• Contribute to the efficient use of financial and other resources.
• Minimize expenditure and report any deviations from budgetary limits.

• Maintain effective relationships with employees and customers to ensure high-quality service.
• Demonstrate problem-solving skills while adhering to company values and standards.

• Minimum :
  • Grade 12 Certificate (NQF 4)
  • Trade Test: Fitter / Fitter and Turner (NQF 5)

• Minimum :
  • Up to 3 years technical and mechanical maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.

• Computer Literacy (Basic MS Office; SAP, ERP Systems, and job-specific software systems).
• Knowledge of relevant maintenance practices, designs, methodologies, and SOPs.
• Understanding of housekeeping and safety principles.

Role Purpose:

The position reports directly to the Engineering & Maintenance Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

• Carry out maintenance functions to ensure that the machines & factory remain well looked after
• Where necessary live documents are to be kept at certain machines
• Maintenance checks on chillers, cooling towers & compressor
• Repairs, maintenance alterations when required or requested
• General upkeep of the grounds & structure
• Carry out all items timeously
• Carry out all other reasonable instructions to the best of your ability, bearing in mind that these secondary to the mandatory scheduled maintenance items.
• Welding and fabrication of new equipment and machinery
• Documented weekly checklists to be filled in
• Follow the health and safety procedures as stipulated by the company - ensure you and all you see are acting in a manner of compliance.
• Comply with PPE requirements
• Adhere to uniform requirements as stipulated by the company
• Report any detected health and safety concerns immediately
• Factory is permanently clean and tidy
• Clear evidence of good house-keeping practices are to be visible upon entering the maintenance dept. With all like type items to be stored in a traceable & organised manner.

• Work in collaboration with other members of staff to allow for smooth planning of both your department requirements to fulfil its maintenance duties, which simultaneously allows for the production plan to continue as undisturbed as possible.

Employer Description

Our client is a manufacturer of machinery and associated consumables.

• Maintain and service machines such as light metal & wire forming.
• Install, QC, service, and troubleshoot machines on customer sites (electro/mechanical).

• Minimum of 10 years' experience in the manufacturing industry.
• Experienced in the use of milling machine, surface grinder, & lathe machines.

Market Related

• Provide accurate reports of all maintenance done.
• Repair malfunctioning mechanical systems.
• Collaborate with other fitters and electricians on large-scale projects.
• Analyze and interpret blueprints for mechanical systems.
• Construct structural components from raw materials.
• Inspect fabricated components to ensure correct sizing and specifications.
• Conduct tests on malfunctioning systems to identify root causes.
• Replace damaged or defective components as needed.
• Adhere to all worksite safety rules and regulations.

• Trade Tested Fitter
• Machine fitting experience of 3-5 years, together with technical knowledge of drawings, equipment and machinery (specifically CNC Maintenance and repair experience)
