The ideal candidate will be responsible for identifying areas of energy efficiency and reliability improvement for main LV distribution and downstream to the DC (e.g., UPSs, STSs, distribution from DC to Energy Centre, generator distribution, HV switchgear), including innovative technologies and practices.
Main functions of the job include:
- Perform regular equipment inspections to identify and address potential issues proactively.
- Oversee 3 yearly electrical maintenance shutdowns to ensure time efficiency and appropriate level of maintenance at the Energy Centre and MV level.
- Drive the transformation from preventative maintenance to condition-based maintenance.
- Make recommendations on which electrical maintenance and inspection functions should be insourced.
- Advise the Maintenance Department to ensure all electrical systems are maintained in accordance with the company's standards, international best practices, and OEM requirements.
- Bridge the skills gap between service providers and the company's operations, properly questioning the service provider on suggested repairs.
- Serve as a 3rd line escalation for complex technical escalations and collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve emergencies promptly.
- Compile electrical system simulation scenarios and assist with scheduling and completion of exercises to ensure all teams are practiced in required emergency responses.
- Highlight training needs with the L&D Manager and collaborate with him/her to develop and deliver training programs that enhance electrical/UPS skills of employees.
- Deep involvement in RCAs and tracking of correctives, creating a link between operations and design, ensuring lessons learned are adapted nationally under scenario training.
- Manage electrical capacity (load balancing, design capacity vs sold capacity, demand, busbar load, phasing on UPS loads, PALS oversold at Power Distribution Panel level, managing trip risk as we approach >95% of capacity, high-density racks).
- Ensure value from the company's Building Management System as an expert user, considering trend analysis of alarms and electrical system incidents to identify improvement opportunities.

Job Description
The role of the Electrical Engineer will be to assist SolarAfrica’s engineering team in their specific support functions to Sales, Project Delivery and Operations and Maintenance departments. This includes engineering design and engineering design reviews, and the development of technical standards and procedures. Responsibilities will also include providing technical recommendations, identifying and documenting lessons learnt and knowledge transfer
The successful candidate must demonstrate great attention to detail, and multi-tasking abilities. Furthermore, the position would require technical knowledge and experience in the Solar PV and BESS industry and continuous product research and testing to ensure the execution of projects using relevant and up-to-date technology, improving systems based on lessons learned.
Existing sites range from 50kWp+, with new sites ranging from 1000kWp and include utility scale projects. Occasional overtime may be required to meet critical deadlines; however, a flexible work policy is in place. The candidate should be willing to travel within South Africa and other African countries on an adhoc basis.
Position of the job in the organisation: The successful candidate will report directly to the Senior Electrical Engineer
- Build, design, and grow any business relationships vital to the success of the engineering department.
- Engineering lead/support on all ad hoc company projects (i.e., development of new monitoring system/portal)
- Draft, update and/or review and ensure adherence to SolarAfrica’s technical standards, requirements, and processes, incorporating lessons learnt to mitigate risks and ensure compliance.
- Actively review and assist with updating technical processes to ensure we deliver and manage world-class solar PV systems that meet the funders and all legal requirements.
- Conduct engineering due diligence across projects, suppliers, and new financed products to ensure technical viability and compliance
- Provide engineering support across departments including project development, sales, and business development.
- Ensure SolarAfrica technical processes are followed by Contractors and all related documentation submitted and filed away for future reference
- Design to legal & SolarAfrica standards & sign off
- Develop, review and vet project designs, drawings, simulations, the scope of Works (SOW), Bill of Quantities (BOQ), project proposals, full-scale project plans, schedule, and associated communications documents.
- Use solar specific software to assist with project drawings, designs, and yield reports.
- Conduct engineering “lessons learned” meetings and create a recommendations report identifying successful and unsuccessful project elements.
- Perform commissioning checks on-site with contractors to ensure the system has been delivered according to predefined parameters and specifications to SolarAfrica standards.
- Provide technical assistance for troubleshooting.
- Performing site assessments to identify project-specific constraints and provide feedback in a formal report.
- Analyse energy consumption from end-user electricity bills, logged data, consumption patterns and other load parameters.

PERSON DESCRIPTION
Experience and qualifications:
- Over 3 years of proven experience in the design of Solar PV sites of 1MW and above (including utility-scale projects), as well as BESS systems of 500kWh or higher.
- Experience in supporting the implementation and operations of Solar PV sites 1MW (including utility scale sites) and higher and BESS 500kWh or higher
- Good understanding of solar PV and related technologies. 3+ years of proven electrical engineering experience,
- BEng/ BSc or BTech degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification
- Valid driver's license and willing to travel
- Must have the ability to interpret and create technical drawings using CAD.
- Strong communication & interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to work to strict deadlines & budgets.

Our client, a reputable company based in Mount Edgecombe, Durban, is seeking a skilled and motivated Electrical Engineer to join their dynamic team. This is an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented professional with a passion for innovation and a commitment to safety, quality, and performance.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, development, and maintenance of electrical products and components, ensuring full compliance with industry standards such as NRCS, IEB, and CB.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop electrical products, wiring layouts, and systems
- Conduct feasibility studies and prepare accurate cost estimates for new projects
- Ensure all designs and installations comply with industry codes and safety regulations (e.g. NRCS, IEB, CB)
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers, project managers, and contractors throughout project lifecycles
- Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation, specifications, and user manuals
- Test, commission, and troubleshoot electrical equipment and systems
- Provide diagnostic and technical support to maintenance and operation teams
- Stay informed on new technologies, materials, and trends in the electrical engineering space
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferred or required depending on level)
- 2+ years of experience in electrical design, engineering, or a related field
- Proficient with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, EPLAN) and stimulation tools
- Strong knowledge of electrical codes , standards, and safety, safety procedures
- Excellent analytical, communication, and organisational skills
