SGS South Africa, Matrocast Division, is seeking to fill a key role in its Civil Engineering Sites Laboratories in the Western Cape Region. The role includes but are not limited to assisting the Supervisor/ Laboratory Manager with all tasks, whether it’s on site or in the commercial laboratory. To clean all equipment on a regular basis. To complete all preparation of materials to be tested in the laboratory division, including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, aggregate with bench calculation as and when required for testing. The Senior Materials Tester will ensure that the laboratory is clean at all times and will carry out all work related instructions from the technicians/supervisors or authorized personnel.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a person with integrity and good interpersonal skills and is able to command respect from those he/she deals with, whilst possessing enough energy and passion to maintain good staff relationships. Job Description
  • Senior Materials Tester is responsible to supervise and/or carry out and take responsibility of testing for all tests that the employee is deemed competent for strictly in accordance to prescribed methods. • A Senior Materials Tester is responsible for cleaning up the site or workshop after task is completed or at the end of the day which every comes first, where the job was carried out and will make sure its free off all consumables used to perform the job (masking tape, tins).
  • A Senior Materials Tester is responsible to adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • A Senior Materials Tester is responsible to orally report any deviations, irregularities and non-conformances
  • A Senior Materials Tester is responsible to perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the authorized site supervisor/laboratory manager and regional manager.
  • A Senior Materials Tester is responsible to perform all field and laboratory work including sampling, calculations and performing test methods accurately
  • Complete timesheets accurately on a daily basis.
  • Ensure discipline within his/her assigned department,
Qualifications
  • Grade 12
  • Knowledge, skills and experience sufficient to be recognized as a qualification through - Recognition of Prior Learning.
  • Language: Proficiency in English (Read, write, speak
  • Computer literacy in Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Must be competent and comfortable with the SANS and THM 1 test methods.
Additional Information
  • Sampling and preparation experience advantageous
  • Administration experience will be Advantageous
  • Fieldwork (densities, layer/stockpile sampling, manufacture and handle concrete cubes, DCP, Ring and Ball test (road surfaces), Sand Patch, On Site Viscosity tests, Sampling of Asphalt and Bitumen.
  • Competent and qualified to do all tests in all laboratory divisions including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete / aggregate
  • Do all calculations in full related to the tests mentioned above

Duties/Responsibilities:

Tendering:

  4. Minimum of 3 years’ experience managing multiple teams over multiple deliveries.
  5. Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience mentoring and developing junior engineers.
  6. Strong understanding of local, international codes and standards, preferably including those applicable to South Africa and the Middle East.
  7. Strong technical view of building services, focusing mainly on Mechanical.
  8. Strong proficiency in Revit would be an advantage.
  9. Strong proficiency in fire and mechanical simulation software is highly advantageous.

About the role:

We are looking for a Professionally Registered Civil Engineer or Technologist with experience in civil engineering projects with an emphasis on bulk water conveyance (bulk water pipelines, pump stations, reservoirs, and associated infrastructure) to join our industry-leading Water team in Cape Town.

Role Responsibilities

Project Management of bulk water conveyance related projects.

Perform complex engineering designs, calculations, and analysis of bulk water pipelines, pump stations, reservoirs, and associated infrastructure across the full lifecycle of the project, i.e., planning, design and implementation which includes construction and completion.

Conduct hydraulic modeling and simulations using industry accepted tools such EPANET, InfoWater, or WaterGEMS.

Co-ordinate and integrate the design with other engineering disciplines (i.e., structural, fire, mechanical and electrical), development of 3D models, technical drawings and details, technical specifications and associated quantities.

Produce other key deliverables on projects such as technical and project related reports, specifications and procurement documentation.

Administration of construction contracts as Contracts EngineerEmployer’s Agent Representative Principal Agent including associated site supervision and administrative responsibilities, and dealing with construction queries.

Be a team player that is willing to collaborate across multiple disciplines and across multiple geographies in Africa and internationally.

Ensure that all work complies with Zutari’s quality control procedures and ensuring that required quality standards are maintained.

BEng/BSc/BTech or equivalent in Civil Engineering.

A post-graduate qualification will be advantageous.

Registered as a Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist with ECSA or evidence of submission (proof of submission required).

A minimum of 5 years’ post-graduate experience on civil engineering projects, with an emphasis on bulk conveyance. Experience should entail working on projects across their full lifecycle, i.e., planning through to the end of construction.

Proficient in MS Office Suite products. Knowledge in MS Projects will be advantageous.

Project Management and construction related experience in civil engineering projects.

Construction related experience in bulk conveyance projects will be an advantage.

Sound knowledge and expertise in GCC and FIDIC general conditions of contract. Knowledge of other construction contracts in the field of engineering will be advantageous.

Sound knowledge or expertise in 3D engineering design software applicable to the envisaged role (especially Autodesk suite) will be an advantage.

SGS South Africa, Matrocast Division, is seeking to fill a key role in its Civil Engineering Site Laboratories in the Western Cape Region. The roles involves but not limited to providing, implement and manage a laboratory production plan as per the site requirements. The Site Laboratory Manager to ensure all client communication is communicated to the relevant Regional/Contracts Manager and ensure the requests are acted on, while maintaining discipline on site.

  • A Site Laboratory Manager is responsible for Laboratory Management production planning on site and meeting deadlines.
  • A Site Laboratory Manager is responsible to liaise with clients and relevant regional manager.
  • A Site Laboratory Manager is responsible to ensure reporting is correct before signing and distribution.
  • A Site Laboratory Manager is responsible for implementation of quality control systems and Health and Safety regulations in and around the laboratory.
  • A Site Laboratory Manager is responsible for multi-disciplinary site laboratory including Soils, Concrete, asphalt, Seals and Aggregates
  • A Site Laboratory Manager is responsible to adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • A Site Laboratory Manager is responsible to assist the technicians with any job whether it is on site or inside the laboratory as per instruction from the authorized site supervisor /laboratory manager.
  • A Site Laboratory Manager is responsible to perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the authorized site supervisor/laboratory manager and regional manager.
  • A Site Laboratory Manager is responsible for following all SGS policies and procedures on site including but not limited to the payroll, leave, disciplinary procedure.
  • Provide training for all staff as training needs are identified.
  • Ensure all SGS mandatory (OI Toolbox/ Annual Integrity / Social Media etc) training is done as and when required.
  • All timesheets, claim forms and payroll instructions are sent to the relevant departments timeously.
Qualifications
  • Relevant National Diploma or NQF 6 / Grade 12 or NQF4 equivalent or skills and experience sufficient to be recognized as a qualification through - Recognition of Prior Learning.
  • Drivers License
  • Relevant National Diploma and ten years relevant experience or NQF 6 and ten years relevant experience. OR
  • Grade 12 and fifteen years relevant experience or NQF4 and fifteen years relevant experience.
Skills/Competencies
  • Competent and qualified to do all tests in all laboratory divisions including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete / aggregate
  • Competent and qualified to do quality laboratory control and implementation
  • Competent and qualified to supervise and execute all field work
  • Be familiar with COLTO (Now COTO)
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety
  • Competent and qualified to do all tests (TMH 1 and SANS) in all laboratory divisions including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete / aggregate
  • Computer literate (Word, Excel, Outlook)

We are in search of a Lecturer within our School of Engineering and Science to support the expertise within our current team. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality teaching and learning experiences that promote student success, engagement, and retention.

This role requires a dynamic, supportive, and innovative educator with strong technical expertise in robotics, electronics, and programming. The Lecturer will contribute to programme development, ensure academic integrity, provide exceptional high-level support, and foster collaborative relationships within the institution and industry.

Position Duties & Responsibilities
  • Facilitating student learning through interactive teaching that promotes engagement and supports the overall student learning experience.
  • Setting, conducting, and grading assessments, providing timely, meaningful, and constructive feedback.
  • Contributing to programme and content development, including the improvement of teaching resources and curriculum design.
  • Undertaking relevant academic administration activities to ensure compliance with institutional policies and timelines.
  • Ensuring a positive student experience through academic support, mentorship, and maintaining high levels of customer service.
  • Preparing comprehensive briefs and marking schedules for each project at the start of the module, including aims, learning outcomes, submission requirements, assessment criteria, references, and resources.
  • Informing students of assessment methods, procedures, and regulations in line with institutional briefs and assessment policy.
  • Staying informed and abreast of developments and trends within mechatronic engineering and higher education teaching practice.
  • Promoting student success by identifying at-risk students early and implementing appropriate intervention strategies.
  • Supporting improved student retention and throughput rates through innovative teaching practices and student success initiatives.
  • Building and maintaining communities of learning and practice within the department.
  • Being perceived by students as approachable, fair, and supportive, while maintaining professionalism and academic standards.
  • Collaborating with colleagues across departments to strengthen teaching, learning, and student support processes.
Application Requirements
  • Masters in a relevant engineering field is a minimum requirement.
  • Registered member at ECSA is a pre-requisite.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in teaching and learning within the Higher Education environment.
  • Strong knowledge of core areas of civil engineering, including: Structural Engineering and Materials Science; Geotechnical Engineering and Soil Mechanics; Transportation Engineering and Pavement Design; Hydrology, Hydraulics, and Water Resources Engineering; Environmental Engineering and sustainable practices; Construction Project Management, contract administration, and site practices.
  • Proficiency in engineering software and tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, or similar.
  • Ability to teach, develop content, and conduct assessments effectively.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, safety codes, and Civil Engineering regulations.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire and engage students.
  • High levels of empathy, emotional intelligence, and student support capability.
  • Ability to provide clear, fair, and constructive feedback on assessments.
