Job Description

The purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive accounting and taxation support by independently managing day-to-day financial operations, ensuring accurate reporting, and maintaining compliance with statutory requirements. The incumbent will support the Tax Compliance Manager in tax-related matters and collaborate closely with the Finance team to ensure efficient financial management and decision-making across the organization


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE ROLE

  • Maintain the general ledger, process journal entries, and perform monthly reconciliations.
  • Prepare and review management accounts, financial schedules, and supporting reports.
  • Assist the Tax Compliance Manager in preparing, reviewing, and submitting VAT, PAYE, and corporate tax returns in line with legislative requirements.
  • Conduct tax reconciliations, ensure accurate records, and highlight areas of risk or discrepancy.
  • Support month-end and year-end closing processes, including reconciliations and financial schedules.
  • Maintain proper filing of financial and tax records for audit and compliance purposes.
  • Support statutory audit processes by preparing audit schedules and responding to auditor queries.
  • Ensure compliance with IFRS/GAAP standards, company policies, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Collaborate with the Finance team on budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
  • Assist with internal controls and process improvements to enhance financial accuracy and efficiency.
  • Provide ad hoc financial and tax analysis to support business decisions and management reporting.



Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation or related field or equivalent qualification.
  • Professional certification towards (SAIPA, CIBA, SAICA, CIMA, or equivalent) advantageous or in progress.
  • 1–5 years’ relevant accounting and taxation experience with exposure to taxation.
  • Proven experience with financial reporting, reconciliations, and tax compliance.
  • Proficiency in accounting systems and strong MS Excel skills.

DESIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Solid understanding of taxation legislation (VAT, PAYE, corporate income tax) and accounting standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail.

The Taxation Accountant is a seasoned subject matter expert, responsible for preparing and submitting tax statements and returns for the company. This role provides advice on financial and tax matters and provides support to ensure tax legislation and planning compliance. Key responsibilities
  • Uses tax form instructions and tax tables to make proper entries on tax submission forms.
  • Assists with the development of corporate tax plan that ensure proper reporting of tax planning initiatives.
  • Ensures timely and accurate filing of all relevant direct and indirect tax returns.
  • Assists with finding tax solution to complicated tax issues or errors from incorrect tax filings.
  • Assists with the management of tax software and implement new features and updates as and when required.
  • Coordinates specific processes to support the implementation and execution of the taxation cycle in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations.
  • Prepares tax returns to ensure their alignment to federal and state income taxes for company at a local level for quarterly and annual federal and related tax compliance.
  • Assists with the preparation of the quarterly and annual tax provision and related tax accounting such as the reconciliation of tax data on financial statements.
  • Prepares a large number of documents on behalf of the company including written correspondence and documents to be submitted to the relevant taxation bodies.
  • Prepares responses related to all types of tax and collates the information required for tax audits and queries raised by taxation regulators in the region.
  • Obtains any supporting documents and compiles tax schedules for annual income tax returns.
  • Assists with the coordination and reviews of the payment of taxes and remains abreast of developments and trends in their area of focus.

Duties & Responsibilities

ROLE:

  • You are responsible for tax implementation support, including testing in the developing, adapting, and expanding IT systems and processes to ensure tax compliance (e.g., indirect taxes, tax authority reporting, tax ledger reporting, tax risk management, KPI reporting).

Desired Experience & Qualification

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

  • South African citizens/residents are preferred.
  • Post graduate degree or certification in Taxation is preferred.
  • Minimum BCOM in Accounting, Law, Computer Science or similar would be considered.
  • Chartered Accountant or MBA (advantageous).

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • In-depth Process & Accounting Knowledge.
  • Experience and affinity for IT & processes, particularly in international taxes.
  • Strong Change - & Project Management.

SUMMARY:

POSITION INFO:

Job Purpose

To provide tax advice and tax compliance services to a wide range of clients who operate in all sectors. To continually assist and ensure that the Clients receive excellent tax compliance service and thus build and maintain relationships that support the PKF Octagon culture and values. Quality, accuracy and Client service is of paramount importance and is a specific requirement of this position.

Main Responsibilities And Accountabilities

The successful applicant will be required to handle (but is not limited to) the following:

  • Prepare Objections for submission to SARS and submit to SARS as required by the Client and Partners. To liaise directly with the relevant Partner before the submission is made to SARS.
  • Attend to Objections from start to finish ensuring quality of service and accuracy of output and acting in the best interests of the Client.
  • Ensure ongoing follow up and tracking with SARS on all tax related matters, including the objections and submission, on behalf of the Client.
  • Take the IT registrations, Tax Clearance, Tax Applications and Objections to SARS and ensure they are properly received.
  • To accurately process and log all information on GreatSoft.
  • Perform the role of a Client liaison on all tax related matters, ensuring the Client relationship is maintained and excellent services provided.
  • Provide continuous and accurate feedback to the relevant Client and Partners.
  • Attend to the accurate completion of all tax returns.
  • Provide feedback to Partners on the progress of tax returns that you are working on for them.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Must have at least 5 years of experience in a Tax Compliance role at an Audit and Accounting firm.
  • Matric and completed a relevant tax related degree or diploma
  • Must know the latest industry and tax rules and legislation.
  • Must be computer literate, must know specifically GreatSoft and SARS e-filing.

Personal competencies:

  • Able to apply one’s mind to tax issues.
  • Able to interpret information to ensure the maximum benefit to the firm and clients.
  • Constantly kept abreast of changes in the industry and able to interpret these changes to the benefit of the firm and clients.

Quality, accuracy and Client service is of paramount importance and is a specific requirement of this position.Main Responsibilities And AccountabilitiesThe successful applicant will be required to handle (but is not limited to) the following:Prepare Objections for submission to SARS and submit to SARS as required by the Client and Partners. To liaise directly with the relevant Partner before the submission is made to SARS. Attend to Objections from start to finish ensuring quality of service and accuracy of output and acting in the best interests of the Client. Ensure ongoing follow up and tracking with SARS on all tax related matters, including the objections and submission, on behalf of the Client. Take the IT registrations, Tax Clearance, Tax Applications and Objections to SARS and ensure they are properly received. To accurately process and log all information on Great Soft. Perform the role of a Client liaison on all tax related matters, ensuring the Client relationship is maintained and excellent services provided. Provide continuous and accurate feedback to the relevant Client and Partners. Attend to the accurate completion of all tax returns. Provide feedback to Partners on the progress of tax returns that you are working on for them. Qualifications and experience:Must have at least 5 years of experience in a Tax Compliance role at an Audit and Accounting firm. Matric and completed a relevant tax related degree or diploma Must know the latest industry and tax rules and legislation. Must be computer literate, must know specifically Great Soft and SARS e-filing. Personal competencies:Able to apply one’s mind to tax issues. Able to interpret information to ensure the maximum benefit to the firm and clients. Constantly kept abreast of changes in the industry and able to interpret these changes to the benefit of the firm and clients. Accountable, responsible, delivery orientated. Strive to constantly add value. Able to plan work flow methodically. Able to work well under pressure. Ensure professional and positive attitude at all times. Display excellent communication skills (both verbal and written). Self-motivated, driven and determined. Team player. Ensures attention to detail and quality of output. Shift Pursuit is partnering with an audit, accounting and tax firm in Johannesburg. We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Tax Compliance Officer to join their team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in individual tax and be confident in handling a variety of SARS-related matters.

Requirements:

  • Tax-related certification (essential)
  • Own vehicle and valid driver’s license (essential)
  • Fluent in Afrikaans

  • Application for Tax Clearance Certificates
