About the Role:

We are hiring a Software Engineering Lead to take the responsibility for the work on maintaining, modernizing and enhancing a key product, LexisNexis Classification. This product uses AI to read millions of patents globally and pull the relevant patents into custom categories that are relevant to the specific technology areas users define.

You’ll be the go-to person for a small highly skilled agile team, with ownership over the mission and your development practices and process. Your engineering team will be based mainly in South Africa but also across Europe. You will also work closely with existing application teams, as well as with a broader range of stakeholders distributed across the UK, Germany, Netherlands and the USA.

As a Software Engineering Lead, you will play a crucial role in overseeing software development mainly within LexisNexis Classification. You will contribute directly to solving technical problems as well as guiding your team to success.

Responsibilities

  • Owning and executing backlog of product optimization and enhancements.
  • Being responsible for backend and frontend maintenance of the product and ensuring bug fixes are prioritized in a timely manner.
  • Assisting in requirements gathering, decomposition and implementation of new features, such as additional features for product integration into existing LexisNexis Intellectual Property products.
  • Integrating performance and cost-optimization considerations into development work, throughout the entire development lifecycle.
  • Able to communicate and take ownership within the team and across team boundaries.
  • Helping to maintain AWS platform infrastructure with CDK, such as NodeJS/Python Lambdas.
  • Assisting in refactoring the existing application.
  • Writing and reviewing detailed specifications for the development of complex system components.
  • Leading in development processes, coding best practices, and code reviews.
  • Managing a team of software engineers in a Scrum based development environment while collaborating with stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Understand Software Engineering techniques and processes, particularly adapting Scrum and agile frameworks to meet business needs.
  • Experience with AWS or similar cloud providers, including knowledge on running cost effective serverless architecture.
  • Experience working with React.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills applicable to a wide audience.
  • Experience with Python, JavaScript, Go, Azure Pipelines, GraphQL (or similar API schemas) or willingness to rapidly learn.
  • Experience in leading software engineering efforts for AI-enabled SaaS products is desirable, but not essential.

Enterprise-Grade Engineering
  • Drive platform maturity, stability, and extensibility to meet the needs of enterprise/B2B customers.
  • Ensure systems and data comply with security, regulatory, and integration requirements, including authentication standards, audit trails, and role-based access control.
  • Champion API-first, integration-ready thinking in all platforms and product design.
  • Lead the definition and enforcement of non-functional requirements for scale, uptime, security, and performance.
Delivery Guardrails & Execution Oversight
  • Implement delivery guardrails including:
  • Feasibility reviews and technical discovery processes.
  • Scoping and effort estimation standards.
  • Root-cause post mortems and retrospectives.
  • Technical debt tracking and prioritisation.
  • Partner with the VP of Engineering to drive consistent delivery metrics (e.g., cycle time, DORA metrics, quality gates).
  • Maintain a culture of shared ownership and continuous delivery.
AI, Automation & Applied Innovation
  • Own the innovation agenda across engineering, with a focus on applied use of AI and automation to improve product intelligence, platform operations, and developer experience.
  • Prioritise and lead AI adoption through internal R&D, experimentation, and external partnerships.
  • Identify areas for automation across internal tooling, monitoring, testing, and deployment pipelines—and assign ownership for implementation.
Organisational Leadership & Talent Strategy
  • Build and lead a high-performing technical organisation across architecture, engineering, DevOps, and security.
  • Create succession planning for key technical roles and ensure strong leadership pipelines.
  • Partner with HR and People teams on engineering career frameworks, development pathways, and high-impact team structures.
  • Champion engineering culture and diversity, ensuring an environment where technologists thrive.
Stakeholder & External Engagement
  • Serve as the executive interface between Technology and other business units.
  • Translate technical vision into language suitable for board and investor conversations.
  • Represent the company in industry forums, client meetings, and technical partnerships.
REQUIREMENTS Formal Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • 10+ years of experience in technology leadership roles, including at least 3–5 years as a CTO or equivalent in a SaaS or fast-scaling tech business.
  • Strong foundation in software engineering, systems design, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Experience scaling engineering teams and tech platforms in high-growth environments.
  • Proven ability to make strategic trade-offs between speed, cost, and scale.

Purpose of the Position

Purpose of the Position: Lead and oversee a multidisciplinary and dynamic team, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality software products. This role involves software development, software testing, architecture design and reviews, strategic planning and resource allocation. This role is pivotal in aligning engineering practices with enterprise strategies, implementing modern technologies, and driving operational excellence through DevOps, continuous improvement, and stakeholder collaboration.

Key Performance Objectives Software Engineering
  • Provide direction and clarity on all technical aspects of software development.
  • Oversee the design and development of software applications.
  • Direct the work of subordinates in delivering high quality application systems and components on time.
  • Manage the day-to-day software engineering activities of subordinates including development, testing, debugging, maintaining application systems and documentation.
  • Provide a solid understanding of in-use technologies in high scale environments.
  • Provide technical leadership to subordinates.
  • Ensure consistency in adherence to software engineering principles, best practices, and guidelines.
  • Standardization of technologies, approaches, and architectures across teams in a functional competency according to prescribed architectures to facilitate reuse and mobility of team members, and to increasingly respond better to change.
  • Drive architectural changes in current and future projects.
  • Resolve production issues timeously and efficiently by providing technical leadership and ownership across various remediation forums.
  • Take ownership of key work streams and work packages when called for, by playing the role of “Delivery Owner”.
  • Support technical operations & integrations work streams including contributing to the activities as called upon by application support teams.
Process Improvement
  • Manage and maintain documentation related to the day-to-day operations, i.e. Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Actively monitor software development & testing and delivery processes and ensure continuous improvement thereof.
  • Ensure that the correct processes and methodologies are followed consistently.
  • Build a continuous-improvement culture within software development teams.
  • Drive engineering initiatives to improve best practices and streamlined software delivery while striving for continuous improvement.
  • Implement remedial actions where necessary.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree (NQF 7 and higher) in Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science or a related technical discipline
  • Post graduate qualification will be an advantage
Experience
  • A minimum of 5-8 years’ experience as a Software Developer, with 2-3 years’ experience in a technical leadership position
  • Proven experience with software architecture principles and the ability to apply them to design scalable and maintainable systems
  • Experience in monitoring and logging tools such as Grafana, App Dynamics, Splunk, PRTG
  • Experience in unit testing and code quality tools such as SonarQube
  • Experience in conducting effective research as well as the ability to analyse, troubleshoot and modify highly complex software systems independently
  • Proficient in version control systems like GIT
  • Proven track record in driving change successfully through a team by demonstrated by successful project completions, adoption of new technologies and process improvements
  • Experience of working in a high-pressured environment and working to tight deadlines
  • Technical expertise and a good understanding of the underlying business processes and systems
  • Experience of working with multiple third-party vendors
  • Experience in advocating development practices like test-driven development, continuous integration, and continuous deployment
  • Preferred databases technologies: Oracle, SQL Server, NoSQL variants
  • Preferred Platform technologies: AWS, Azure, VMWare, Windows & Linux Servers
