Job Purpose

The purpose of the role is to define and establish the current, target, and future-state architecture across all levels of IT infrastructure software, ensuring alignment with architecture design principles and the University of Pretoria’s (UP) broader IT environment. The role also involves researching current and emerging technologies to identify solutions that best fit UP’s needs. It includes responsibility for risk management and mitigation, as well as oversight of the IT Security Manager.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Set and describe architecture through technology roadmaps:
    • Create an understanding of the enterprise, business system, business process, and industry to the team(s) supporting or interfacing with the technology landscape;
    • Maintain current knowledge of all relevant technology developments and seek opportunities to deploy new technologies that benefit UP in a knowledge repository library;
    • Map business requirements to technology capability, identify gaps and omissions in the end-to-end solution, and review on going and proposed projects to identify opportunities for reuse and process improvement;

  • Manage the Project Start Architecture process:
    • Compile and submit the Project Start Architecture documentation to the Enterprise Architecture Review Board for approval;
    • Ensure compliance of project delivery to the agreed architecture;
    • Review and integrate all requirements for the technology landscape, including functional, security, usability, performance, quality, and operations requirements;
    • Review and integrate changes to the technical architecture for the development, execution, and operations environments;

  • Technology investigations:
    • Research and evaluate new technologies and trends, generating possible recommendations for use in supporting the business objectives for optimisation;
    • Review and integrate changes to the technical architecture for the development, execution, and operations environments;
    • Make final recommendations regarding hardware, network products, system software, integration, and security;

  • Manage the security architecture function:
    • Develop an information security architecture;
    • Manage IT Security Manager and ensure that activities enhance the IT security of the University;
    • Grow the maturity of the security architecture function, and the IT security environment;
    • Manage the human resources function;

  • Run the Enterprise Architecture process:
    • Create architecture baseline, and define the complete technical environment;
    • Consult with technical resources for methods, procedures, and standards to use during solution development;
    • Contribute to the ITS strategic plan and budget;
    • Manage and chair the Enterprise Architecture Forum, including documentation, collaboration space, meeting agenda/minutes, deviation processes and communication with the Architecture Board;

  • Architecture diagrams:
    • Obtain the relevant information for the development of architectural diagrams for all technologies or projects, which will be referred for approval and publishing;
    • Contextualise the architecture diagrams within the installed-technology landscape;
    • Integrate the architecture diagrams in the Project Start architecture.
Minimum Requirements

  • A relevant four-year Honours degree / Postgraduate diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electronic Engineering, or IT Management Sciences; with:
  • A total of six years’ experience, with two years in management, in / as:
    • An Enterprise / Solutions / Technology Architect, with a sound understanding of the theoretical body of knowledge for Enterprise Architecture (e.g. Zachman, Ross, TOGAF);
    • Designing, building and operating IT systems (including IT infrastructure and applications);
  • The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) Certificate, or equivalent architectural certification;
OR

  • A relevant Bachelors / BTech degree; with:
  • A total of eight years’ experience, with three years in management, in / as:
    • An Enterprise / Solutions / Technology Architect, with a sound understanding of the theoretical body of knowledge for Enterprise Architecture (e.g. Zachman, Ross, TOGAF);
    • Designing, building and operating IT systems (including IT infrastructure and applications);

Job Purpose

  • To oversee the Identity and Access management, the Java ADF development and System Integration resources of the ITS Enterprise Systems’ Middleware and System integration team, prioritise work to be done, and oversee the team members’ involvement in UP projects;
  • Supervise and ensure the effective and efficient operational management, coordination, planning, provisioning, maintenance (installation, configuration, upgrade and patching), user support, problem solving, availability, performance/monitoring, backups, disaster recovery and support (also after-hours) of all the applications, databases and supporting software that are supported by the ITS Enterprise Systems’ Middleware and System integration team – including the Oracle Identity and Access Management, Oracle WebCenter Portal, Oracle Java ADF, and Oracle Service Oriented Architect (SOA) platforms;
  • Ensure that the technical leads within the ITS Enterprise Systems’ Middleware and System integration team reporting to this manager, conduct technical investigations related to Identity and Access Management and System Integration, to address new business requirements, enhance business processes, improve performance and stability of business processes, implement best practices, define strategies and plan towards implementation of strategies;
  • Manage the budget and all software and service contracts, requisitions and invoices pertaining to the corporate UP software within the responsibility of the ITS Enterprise Systems’ Middleware and System integration team;
  • Supervise the participation of the ITS Enterprise Systems’ Middleware and System integration team in UP and ITS project activities, and ensure that project goals are met.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the Enterprise Development and Support Division:
    • Manage the ITS Middleware and System Integration division and subordinates;
    • Establish strategic goals for the ITS Middleware and System Integration division (in line with the UP and ITS strategies), and ensure that those goals are met by compiling related action plans to be executed by the division;
    • Participate in investigations into new software in order to improve the efficiency of the division/ITS department and the service delivered to the UP community;
    • Co-ordinate activities across the ITS Middleware and System Integration environment and third-party vendors/service providers;
    • Establish a systems management regime to ensure the reliability, availability, maintainability, testability and security (RAMTS) of the corporate databases and applications within the responsibility of the ITS Middleware and System Integration division;
    • Establish processes and procedures for the timeous and effective patching and upgrading of software, with the minimum interruption to business processes. Liaise with vendors, users and stakeholders in order to build and enhance the Middleware and System Integration strategy, and to plan and implement software upgrades and migrations;
    • Ensure proactive monitoring and problem solving within the database and application environments, and the identification of the need for extra hardware/software resources;
    • Implement and enforce standards and control of the deployment, migration and integrity of databases and applications;
    • Enforce change control procedures with regard to the deployment of changes to all system software;
    • Ensure that all operational problems, as reported via the designated support channels, are solved in a timely and efficient manner;
    • Establish standards, documentation and configuration management, and implement best practice procedures for the administration, maintenance, monitoring, tuning, backup, and recovery of databases and applications;
    • Establish, maintain and manage SLA’s within the ITS Enterprise Systems’ Middleware and System integration team, and with the vendors responsible for providing software support to UP;
    • Participate in the establishment and maintenance of the required support infrastructure, to ensure the effective management and timely resolution of operational problems;
    • Supervise the participation of the ITS Middleware and System Integration division in UP and ITS project activities, and ensure that project goals are met;
    • Provide statistics and other information to ITS management with regard to the availability and management of the software within the responsibility of the ITS Middleware and System Integration division;
    • Adhere to the following:
      • IT policies and procedures;
      • Business processes and rules;
      • Configuration management and documentation procedures;
      • System security techniques and methods;
    • Perform administrative duties e.g. filing, documenting, reporting, etc.;
  • Financial management:
    • Define a clear costing structure of the services provided;
    • Plan, compile, manage and execute the budget pertaining to all software under the responsibility of the ITS Enterprise Systems’ Middleware and System integration team;
    • Provide IT management with the necessary information and assistance to produce management reports;
    • Liaise with vendors and UP stakeholders to establish software and services contracts within the responsibility of the ITS Enterprise Systems’ Middleware and System integration team, and ensure the timeous renewal or cancellation of such contracts;
    • Ensure the timeous payment of software and services contracts by managing the placement of requisitions and obtaining invoices from vendors and submitting such to the UP-Finance department within the prescribed time frames;

  • Human Resources management:
    • Plan and execute personnel management strategy, including personnel development and recruitment;
    • Implement effective performance management in accordance with University policy, to develop and enhance the performance of staff members and thus contributing to the overall performance of the University;
    • Coordinate division’s after-hours support and task management;
    • Manage the allocation of resources or resource time to projects conducted within UP and ITS;
    • Improve performance by defining and executing an individual performance development plan; build proficiency levels for current position and future advancement by participating in formal and informal training opportunities.

Are you an experienced Network Engineer looking for your next opportunity? We're seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team in Pretoria , with 3+ years of hands-on networking experience . If you’re passionate about building reliable network infrastructure and ready to take on a client-facing role — we want to meet you!

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Design, implement, and support wired and wireless networks (LAN, WAN, WLAN)
  • Configure and maintain switches, routers, access points, and firewalls
  • Perform network diagnostics, upgrades, and performance monitoring
  • Troubleshoot and resolve connectivity issues for clients
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date network documentation
  • Travel to client sites for installations, support, and site assessments
What We’re Looking For
  • 3+ years of network engineering experience
  • Strong understanding of networking protocols (TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, etc.)
  • Practical experience with network monitoring and diagnostic tools
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently
  • Based in Pretoria with a valid driver’s license and willingness to travel

We are seeking a Network Engineer I who will play a vital role in supporting the organization's network infrastructure, ensuring reliable connectivity, security, and performance to facilitate efficient business operations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing daily networking tasks to ensure network reliability, availability, and serviceability with minimal interruption.
  • Managing network technology upgrades or expansion projects, including hardware and software installation, integration testing, and coordinating activities to avoid system disruptions.
  • Collaborating with internal and external teams for problem resolution.
  • Configuring functional networks (LAN, WLAN, WAN).
  • Installing and configuring network devices such as servers, routers, and switches.
  • Monitoring network performance and ensuring reliability and availability.
  • Creating, overseeing, and testing security measures like access authentication and disaster recovery plans.
  • Contributing to the technology lifecycle roadmap, including technology absorption, risk management, refresh, migration, and retirement strategies.
  • Maintaining comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Providing recommendations for improving network capacity, availability, and scalability.

Required expertise:

  • Minimum 2+ years of hands-on experience in network device configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Solid understanding of the OSI or TCP/IP model.
  • Knowledge of networking protocols and standards (e.g., link aggregation, spanning tree, routing protocols, ACL, NAT, WLAN).
  • Experience with switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless devices (WLAN).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience working with vendors such as Juniper, Fortinet, Cisco, or Aruba.

Qualifications:

  • Matric
  • Degree or Diploma in Information Technology or related discipline
  • Valid CCNA, JNCIA, or higher certification
  • Fortinet NSE4 certification is advantageous

As a level 2 Network Engineer, you will be responsible for providing quality technical support to our rapidly growing managed service clients. You will diagnose problems and troubleshoot issues on the network, including the wireless access points, routers, switches and answer directly the IPE team leader

This role is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving customer networks, with the goal of maximizing customer network performance. You will also provide troubleshooting and configuration support by using your strong technical skills in networking for network performance monitoring solutions.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Installation and configuration of wireless, network security, routing and switching.
  • Technical lead on deployment projects.
  • Managing and auditing core network components.
  • Designing networks based on principals’ requirements.
  • Maintaining accurate network diagrams and network management software information for all areas of the network.
  • Preventing and responding to network security breaches, including daily security log reviews.
  • Staying abreast of and ensuring optimal use of current technologies throughout the networking infrastructure.
  • Liaising with Vendors and suppliers for network services and equipment.
  • Managing and supporting network infrastructure.

Qualifications/Minimum requirements:

  • CCNP or other relevant professional Certification AND one other associate certification (Juniper, Ruckus, Fortinet, Arista, Nokia, Alcatel)
  • Good knowledge of NMS systems
  • Min 4 Years’ Experience in a networking role
  • Valid Driver’s License and Own Transport
  • Tech savvy with working knowledge of networking products
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues
  • Proficiency in English
  • Customer-oriented and cool-tempered
  • Fortinet Experience Critical
