Our modelling of electricity price projections sits at the heart of much of our analytical work. Kuungana was established in 2015, and our client base is expanding fast. Recent clients include donors and development banks such as the World Bank, EBRD, FCDO, UNOPS, and the IFC as well as private sector developers, investors, and lenders.

We are already working extensively in South Africa and the Southern Africa region. Recent projects have included:

  • Advising an energy trader on an innovative guarantee mechanism, which will unlock new private sector investment in renewable energy.
  • Identifying opportunities for renewable energy and battery storage procurement for a South African municipality.
  • Acting as market advisor on the buy-side of multiple portfolio M&A deals, involving portfolios of assets in South Africa as well as across Sub-Saharan Africa as a whole.
  • Modelling regional electricity prices, including in the competitive SAPP markets, and advising on the prices that can be accessed by different asset classes under different trading strategies.

What will you be doing? You will be working on a wide range of important projects across the areas highlighted above. In practical terms, this may involve research, market analysis, the preparation of reports and presentations, and the modelling of markets, companies, and projects.

Being amongst our first permanent team members in South Africa you will have an important role in growing our business in the country and through the wider Southern Africa region. As the firm grows, you will have the opportunity to manage individual projects and take on responsibilities in coaching and managing other members of the team.

What are we looking for?

You will have at least an Upper Second / UK 2:1 equivalent degree in an analytical subject. You must also be entitled to work in South Africa. This being our first recruitment round in South Africa, it is also important that you have at least 3 years of relevant energy sector work experience.

Beyond these key requirements, we are open to considering a wide range of candidates. The ideal candidate will also have some, but not necessarily all, of the following attributes:

  • Experience in modelling the electricity sector and preparing or reviewing electricity price projections,
  • Programming skills; for example, use of Python or familiarity with Gurobi, which is used by our power market models,
  • Foreign language skills.

Build strategic relationships at SOCs, Municipalities, Utilities & other existing clients and engage consistently with client stakeholders at all levels to ensure consistent alignment. Actively pursue new key accounts in the public utilities sector and other strategic sectors. Identify upselling and cross-selling opportunities within existing accounts and lead commercial negotiations on new and ongoing contracts. Ensures that the public sector sales and existing clients retention plan is aligned with and supports the overall company revenue goals. Maintain a deep understanding of client operations, challenges, and strategic objectives through regular customer interactions with HODs, Engineers, Plant Managers, and other important role players with a view of creating long-term loyalty to the business and solid trust Responsible for comprehensively responding to business-aligned tenders, RFQs, quotations and proposal efforts to prospects and customers alike Timeous updating of company sales tracking systems with accurate data Analyse client feedback and market dynamics to inform strategic decisions Collaborate with internal teams to ensure effective customer experience Provide input to strategy and new business team based on client needs and feedback, and support the rollout of new products and services as and when they are launched Reporting/presenting at weekly, monthly and Ad Hoc sales meetings Qualifications & Experience: Diploma or bachelors degree in business management, Business Administration, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years experience in key account management, business development, or strategic sales, ideally within the public/private utilities sector. (Experience in the energy sector is a strong advantage.) Proven success in managing and nurturing key accounts in both the public and private sectors, with a track record of securing new business in South Africa. (Experience in other regional markets is a plus.) Consistent track record of exceeding sales targets and driving business growth. Strong understanding of procurement and regulatory frameworks in both public and private sectors. Demonstrated experience in preparing and winning bids, tenders, and RFQs for both public and private sector opportunities. Familiarity with various sales methodologies and experience using Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems. Skills & Competencies: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong presentation abilities that create impact and clarity. Proven ability to deliver high-quality customer service and maintain strong client relationships. Strong technical background (engineering or equivalent). High attention to detail and organisational skills. Ability to manage multiple proposals simultaneously and meet tight deadlines. Commercial acumen and cost estimation knowledge. Strong team collaboration and interpersonal skills.
