Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role based in JHB for a Field Engineer. The Field Engineer will be responsible for troubleshooting, providing technical support, and conducting field services. Daily tasks include diagnosing and resolving technical issues, managing projects, and communicating effectively with customers to ensure top service quality and reliability.
Service monitoring process
Monitor call-out rate on jobs and resolve "sick units" on the different routes.

Verify if callbacks are chargeable or not based on the technician's opinion

Manage technical teams to ensure all maintenance is being completed safely, timeously and to the prescribed/legislated standard
Monitor completion of the biannual and annual inspections completed by technicians. Ensure this is being done and recorded correctly

Complete regular site visits to units on the service portfolio to monitor the quality of workmanship conducted by technicians
Monitor technician performance and recommend performance/disciplinary intervention to HR when required
Keep up to date with regulations/policies/procedures applicable to the maintenance and repair of the company's products. Make recommendations for upgrades in order to comply
Recommend training initiatives to improve service performance and customer satisfaction
Identify shortcomings and recommend improvements to the equipment/systems/policies that would result in better quality units and better service levels
Customer and subontractor relationship management
Accountable for customer satisfaction and quality of service
Attend to difficult customer technical queries, technical reports or interventions when required
Accountable for sub ontractor quality and service performance
Develops and maintains a cordial and professional relationship with the customers and sub ontractors.
Thoroughly investigate and resolve all critical customer problems
People management/leadership
Accountable for people (service technician) development and well-being, and managing the performance of the team and individuals
Determines objectives, and plans as well as organizes, communicates, controls, and motivates the service team
Identifies field operative training needs and manages training plans
Ensure that all service technicians comply with safe work practices in accordance with OH&S standards
KPI
Performance measures:
Number of callouts reported monthly (pattern, increase or decrease in number)
Ensure a callout rate of 10% or less in your region
Noticeable improvement in service technician knowledge base and understanding (passed on from yourself). Measured by survey and reporting
Number of unresolved technician and customer complaints
Ensure not more than 1% of the units in your region are on shutdown. Attend to shutdown units are attended to immediately and put back into service within a maximum of 48 hrs.
Time taken to return units into service from shutdown
Qualifications
- Experience in Troubleshooting and Technical Support

The Opportunity

Key Responsibilities
- Resolve complex technical issues assigned by the Technical Helpdesk (THD) on both KONE and various Non-Kone Equipment (NKE) products, providing remote and on-site support to maintenance technicians.
- Conduct technical due diligence for new equipment (KONE or competitor products) as requested by sales or supervisors.
- Identify and address technical issues or safety hazards in equipment to prevent callouts, creating sales leads where applicable.
- Perform tests and final inspections on KONE and non-KONE (NKE) elevators and escalators to ensure compliance with safety and performance standards.
- Provide feedback to the THD Manager on product improvements, repair needs, or methods to reduce callouts and enhance safety.
- Provide timely, professional feedback on all requests assigned to you by the THD Manager.
- Identify technical competence gaps for maintaining new equipment and communicate them to the Maintenance Supervisor or THD Manager.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues with remote monitoring and alarm systems.
- Plan and manage workload effectively in collaboration with the THD Manager.
- Uphold safe working practices, adhering to KONE's maintenance and safety protocols to protect end-users and colleagues.
What We Are Looking For
Education
- N6 Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related qualification, plus an elevator trade test certificate.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in elevator installation and/or maintenance.
- Experience as a Field Engineer/Adjuster in the Elevator & Escalator Industry would be advantageous.
Skills & Qualifications
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to tackle complex technical challenges.
- Knowledge of non-KONE (NKE) products is an advantage.
- Experience with escalator maintenance is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills for collaborating with teams and engaging with customers.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Effective performance of Troubleshooting, repairs, Field modifications and testing activities
- Support any technical activity on Alstom products during warranty period as well as commissioning, warranty (and validation & certification phase if applicable)
- Diagnoses cause of malfunction/failure of operational equipment and recommends preventative and corrective actions
- Define troubleshooting methodology
- Provides technical guidance and supports technicians in troubleshooting and repairs
- Provides feedback on technical documentation deficiencies.
- Advises Warranty management regarding customer satisfaction, product performance, and suggestions for product enhancements
- Drive Kx (8D) issues with Quality and internal & external Suppliers as support of PrPIM
- Ensure completeness and quality of input to Failure Management data base for RAMS exploitation
- Drive Reliability Growth through failure/event investigation and reliability forecast implementation (with RAMS support).
- Drive and support containment to avoid reoccurrence of failures
- Supports as-maintained Alstom product configuration control and relevant documentation management
- Support technical reviews with internal and external Suppliers, partners, customers, authorities
- Ensure & facilitate information flow within the warranty customer site, warranty functions and project teams. Provides status and transparence on warranty activities, key technical issues, to PrPIM.
- Apply EHS requirements on site with the support of EHS team representatives
- Drive technical Return of Experience/reporting/feedback as support of PrPIM
- Support Obsolescence Management (if applicable)
Support preparation and implementation of Field Modifications (FM)
Compliance and adherence to Environment, Health, Safety and Quality rules, procedures and policies at all times.
Ensure that all quality standards are always met
- Follow depot/site procedures and instructions, both from the Company and from the customer
- Ensure that quality standards of components are met
- Implement 8D Practices and PPS Practices as and when required
- Ensure Zero outstanding NCR's
- Locomotive Configuration – Ensure serialized numbers are logged in MAXIMO / GSI
- I-Forms – Attend to I-Forms; Raise product related Issues; Report Incidents and Complete Actions
- Comply with all safety related training and ensure up to date certifications as required i.e. working at heights
- Report any and all safety concerns as per Company procedure
Collaborate with EHS and Quality teams to ensure we put safety first and maintain first class quality
Accurate and up to date Reporting and Data management
Initiate update, and close work orders on GSI
- Ensure that test documentation are filled out and placed in data file
- Ensure that accurate reporting of work performed are done on GSI.
- Ensure accurate and comprehensive reporting after testing activities
- Ensure that routine testing and type testing documents are completed
- Ensure comprehensive and accurate failure reporting are done
- Ensure proper record keeping
Support the Commissioning Engineer with reporting where required

THE PREFERRED CANDIDATE WILL MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:
- B.Eng / Bsc /Degree (Electrical Engineering)
- Minimum 5 years Rolling Stock (Locomotive / train) experience
- Railway safety & RAMS experience will be advantageous
- Environment, Health and Safety knowledge/exposure
- Hands on Testing / Commissioning, fault finding & repair experience
- Proficient in reading schematics and technical drawings
- Data analytics
- Experience in analytical fault reporting and report writing
- Advance understanding of technical drawings and schematics

Key Responsibilities
Engineer
- Provide technical services as it relates to routine and moderately complex maintenance and/or repair of control systems and their components
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues as they relate to control systems and their components
- Communicate with engineers at customer sites on technical questions and specifications.
- Provide after-hours support in person and/or over the phone.
- Provide technical information and data to Administrative Assistant for the creation of quotations and work scopes. Information includes job repair requirements, parts for order and use, and associated cost.
- Complete necessary service, time tracking, and expense documentation.
- Maintain tools and test equipment properly.
- Communicate with company account managers regarding the status of work as it applies to their customers.
- Communicate with sales personnel regarding customer questions.
- Identify and assist with repair and manufacturing training needs.
- Ensure that all completed work meets the company's Standards and complies with company's ISO Quality System.
- Communicate clearly, concisely, and with accuracy to employees, customers, and vendors
Safety

Qualifications and Experience
- Engineering related Degree – BSc Engineering, BEng, BTech or an equivalent combination of relevant education
- Instrumentation / Electrical Trade Test
- Registered as Professional Engineer with ECSA or
- Registered as Professional Engineering Technologist with ECSA is advantageous
- 5 years engineering experience as instrumentation technician, field service and/or similar industrial environment with focus on automation and advanced instrumentation systems.
- 3 years relevant management experience
- Project management experience
- Mining, metals, and/or automation industry experience preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of Allan Bradley programmable logic controllers (PLC) and fault finding
- Advanced experience in SQL systems and reporting
- Advanced experience in HMI systems
- Advanced experience in communication protocol(Modbus, Canbus, Ethernet, etc.)
- Knowledge of similar programable devices from ABB and Siemens

Required Qualifications
- Qualified to National Diploma or B-Tech Degree level or equivalent,
- Advanced Field Services experience (Previous experience with Molecular Imaging (NM/PET/Cyclotron) and MRI is desirable).

- Comprehensive knowledge of a specific modality or multi-modalities.
