Rand Water is a water utility company in South Africa, responsible for supplying potable water to residents of Gauteng and various other areas in the country. Previously known as the "Rand Water Board", Rand Water is the biggest water utility on the African continent.
Rand Water draws water from various sources, it is then purified before being supplied to local municipalities, industry and mining.
Location: Glenvista, Johannesburg, Gauteng
Duration: 12 months
Rand Water are inviting People With Disabilities (PWDs) to take part in their Learnership programme which will lead to an Office Administration Learnership (NQF Level 3) qualification. Learners will be required to complete their qualifications within the stipulated time frame and in accordance with the contract agreement.
Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:
- Must be a South African citizen, with a valid South African ID
- Must reside in Gauteng
- Must be between 18 and 35 years old
- Must have a disability
- Must be able to Hear and Communicate
- Must have good communication skills (verbal and written)
- Must have completed Matric (NSC)
- Must have passed Mathematics OR Mathematics Literacy, Tourism / Business Studies in Matric, with at least a Level 3/ 4 in all subjects
- Must be currently unemployed
- Must NOT be registered with any institution for a qualification
- Must NOT be enrolled in any Learnership Programme
- Must be able to access the internet at all times, and have good connection, for online training
- Must complete the qualification within the time frame (12 months)
- Must be result driven and self-motivated

- BSc. Eng. (Civil) / BEng. (Civil)
- Preferably a MSc or MEng in Hydrology and Hydraulics
- Around 5 - 7 years experience in relevant work
- Experience in the development and assessment of water balances using GoldSim

Job Purpose
We are inviting a passionate Environmental or Social Scientist to join our Water Resources Management team based in Cape Town. In this role, you will collaborate with a dynamic group of engineers, hydrologists, and scientists to support the delivery of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) projects across Africa and the Middle East.
Role responsibilities
- Support integrated water resources management and development planning initiatives, including catchment management and basin planning.

- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, economists, policymakers, and stakeholders across Africa and the Middle East.
- Facilitate workshops, meetings, and capacity-building events with clients.
- Data collection and analysis, preparation of detailed technical reports, scientific publications, and policy briefs to disseminate findings and influence decision-making.
- Support business development, project management, and preparation of proposal.
- Master’s degree in environmental sciences, hydrology, climate sciences, natural resource management or related fields.
- 2–5 years of relevant post-graduate experience in IWRM or related disciplines.
- Strategic thinking, analytical, and research skills across natural and social sciences.
- Proficiency in the use of remote sensing data and GIS tools.
- Strong analytical skills, including advanced Excel skills and using a programming language for statistical computing and data visualisation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience of engaging with diverse stakeholders including workshop facilitation and communication.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary and international teams.
- Strong time management skills and ability to work efficiently under pressure.
- Willingness to travel in Africa and the Middle East.
- Knowledge of Portuguese and/or French is an advantage.
- Knowledge of climate or hydrological tools is advantageous.

Role Responsibilities
Based on your diverse professional experience and technical knowledge your responsibilities will a combination of the following across various geographies:
Lead hydrological studies including watershed modelling, floodplain mapping, and water balance assessments.
Develop and apply hydrologic and hydraulic models (e.g., WEAP, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SWAT, MIKE HYDRO Basin).
Analyze precipitation, streamflow, groundwater, and climate data to support water resource planning.
Provide expert input on flood risk, stormwater management, and drought mitigation strategies.
Collaborate with engineers, ecologists, planners, and government agencies on multidisciplinary projects.
Mentor junior hydrologists and review technical work for accuracy and quality.
Support stakeholder engagement and public consultation processes.
Stay current with emerging trends in hydrology, climate science, and water policy.
BSc, preferably MSc degree in Hydrology.
Registration as a Pr. Sci. Nat or equivalent
At least 5 years postgraduate experience in hydrological assessment
Familiarity with integrated water resource management (IWRM) principles
Effective planning and time management skills.
Ability to lead, mentor and manage people and have strong inter-personal and networking skills.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
