Job Purpose
The Environmental Engineer ensures compliance with environmental regulations while developing sustainable solutions for energy and petrochemical operations. The role focuses on minimizing ecological impact through waste management, emissions control, and environmental monitoring, while supporting the transition to cleaner energy systems. Key Responsibilities
1. Environmental Compliance & Permitting
- Ensure adherence toNEMA, NWA, and AQA regulations in South Africa.
- Prepare and submitEnvironmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) ,Waste Management Licenses (WML) , andAtmospheric Emission Licenses (AEL) .
- Maintain compliance withISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
- Design and optimizeeffluent treatment systems for refineries/petrochemical plants.
- Implementcarbon capture, flare gas recovery, and VOC reduction initiatives.
- Oversee hazardous waste disposal in line withSANS 10234 .
- Conductair/water/soil quality sampling and interpret lab results.
- Prepareannual environmental performance reports for NERSA/DWS.
- TrackGHG emissions using IPCC methodologies for carbon tax reporting.
- Developdecarbonization roadmaps aligned with company net-zero targets.
- Supportgreen hydrogen, biofuels, and circular economy projects.
- Conductlife cycle assessments (LCA) for new projects.
- Leadspill containment and remediation efforts.
- Investigate environmental incidents usingroot cause analysis (RCA) .
- BEng/BSc in Environmental/Chemical/Civil Engineering .
- PrEng/PrSciNat registration with ECSA/SACNASP (advantageous).
- Certifications:
- NEBOSH Environmental Diploma.
- ISO 14001 Lead Auditor.
- GHG Accounting Certification (e.g., GHG Protocol).
Technical Skills
- Regulatory Knowledge: NEMA, NWA, AQA, and international standards (EPA, IFC).
- Modeling Tools: AERMOD (air dispersion), WATERGEMS (hydrology), SimaPro (LCA).
- Field Techniques: Stack emission testing, groundwater monitoring, biodiversity surveys.
- Stakeholder engagement with DFFE, municipalities, and communities.
- ESG reporting frameworks (GRI, TCFD, CDP).
- Budgeting for remediation projects.
- 3-5 years in oil & gas, mining, or heavy industry .
- Hands-on experience with:
- Sasol/Engen/PetroSA operations.
- EIA processes for energy projects.
- Environmental auditing.

Responsibilities:
- Inspect installations for compliance with specifications, standards, and designs.
- Contribute to progress reports on quality, time, and budget.
- Maintain quality control systems.
- Verify payment milestones.
- Review, verify, and comment on reports, drawings, etc.
- Coordinate project activities and resources.
- Participate in commissioning and Factory Acceptance Tests.
Requirements:
- Electrical Engineering qualification.
- 8+ years of experience in construction, with at least 2 years on renewable energy projects.
- Experience in an Owner's Engineer role will be advantageous.

- Willingness to travel and work away from home.
- Code B driver’s license.
