Our client in the shipping industry is seeking a Shipping Controller based in Cape Town. This is a fixed-term contract position for 5 months within the shipping, logistics, and supply chain industry . The successful candidate will manage daily import and export operations, ensuring accurate documentation, efficient vessel bookings, and compliance with regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Minimum: Matric with additional qualification in Logistics, Supply Chain, or related field.

  • 3–5 years’ experience in shipping, freight forwarding, or import/export control.

  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with shipping systems.

  • Knowledge of South African Customs regulations, EDI, SAD 500, VOC, export documentation, and cargo dues.

  • Experience in shipping or freight environment is advantageous.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work under pressure, including weekends and overtime.



Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately complete veterinary certificates and other required documentation.

  • Book and manage vessel space allocations efficiently.

  • Capture customer information and deliver port documentation.

  • Liaise with cold stores regarding container bookings and stock availability.

  • Ensure proper administration of all port documents.

  • Maintain compliance with standards such as HACCP, GMP, Occupational Health & Safety, and operational SOPs.

  • Perform ad hoc tasks as required to support the shipping department.

Responsibilities

Requirements
  • Tertiary Qualification in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, International Business, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in shipping, logistics, or supply chain management.
  • Specific experience in managing import transactions and international shipping.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills.
  • Proficiency in logistics software and shipment tracking systems.
  • In-depth understanding of customs regulations and international trade compliance.
  • Fluent in English (Afrikaans is beneficial).
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
