Responsibilities

• Admission of the patient into the acute or chronic treatment centre, recording and recapping of medical and surgical history
• Obtain patient information and inform billing department according to unit protocol
• Updating this information as the need arises according to unit protocol
• Obtain a Dialysis Prescription from the treating Nephrologist or Physician
• Ensure that the dialysis machine has been disinfected before use
• Lining and priming of machines with correct consumables
• Weighing the patient and calculating the dry weight and fluid removal
• Monitoring and recording of baseline vital signs.
• Carry out all procedures strictly in accordance with NephroCare Standard Good Dialysis Care (ZA-CI-09-03) and NephroCare Standard Hygiene and Infection Control (ZA-CI-09-04) and NephroCare Standard Water Concentrate and Dialysis Fluid for Haemodialysis and Related Therapies (ZA-CI-10-03)
• Record and Report all patient data accurately using the Database Euclid and TDMS
• Administration of prescribed medication as per doctor’s orders
• Disinfect the machines as per protocol
• Education of patient on renal disease aetiology and treatment modes, blood results, support services and dietary restrictions
• Update all patient files frequently and document all incidents to ensure medico legal requirements are met
• Stock ordering and control as delegated by the unit manager
• Environmental safety and Infection control must be adhered
• Comply with Immunization policy
• Comply with all FMC SOP’s
• Any other duties assigned from time to time by the Clinic Head Nurse within the Scope of Practise of the Registered Nurse

• Knowledge of ventilation care (Non-Invasive and Invasive), geriatric care, pediatric care, dementia care, post-stroke care, and neurological care especially after spinal or brain surgeries.

• Knowledge of prevention of pressure sores in bedridden patients.
• Knowledge of tracheal care or experience in units with tracheostomy patients and suctioning of a tracheal patient.

Maintain accurate files and records of patient medication, incidents and complaints and steps taken to resolve patient problems or prevent incidents from recurring.

Conduct structured ward rounds including accompanying Doctors and other Medical Practitioners for creating and evaluating customized care plans including implementing Doctors instructions and prescriptions.

Monitor activities of nurses to ensure compliance with protocols, security, safety of patient environment, Group Nursing policies and procedures, SANC requirements and act on findings through regular ward rounds.

Assist in reducing healthcare associated infections in the unit by applying appropriate infection prevention practices.

Ensure all patients clinical care risk assessments for theatre preparation is implemented and recorded.

Ensure that all theatre preparation pre-and post-operative is conducted timeously.

Patient Advocacy, Customer / Doctor Relationships;

Build mutually beneficial relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

Drive a positive patient (customer) experience by putting patients first and deliver holistic customer oriented service.

Collaborate with Unit Managers in identifying and implementing actions to improve service quality and problem resolution.

Report, investigate and discuss all negative and positive comments regarding the unit and act on findings, where necessary.

Maintain cooperative relationships among healthcare teams e.g.

Take responsibility for CPD to enhance professional and technical knowledge and skills e.g.

through attendance of educational workshops, rotating to other units to gain broader exposure, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, participating in professional societies and the like.

Ensure performance contracting process is completed timeously and that outputs are delivered according to performance standards.

Promote the Group's brand and market nursing services by responding timeously to patient needs, projecting a professional image by adhering to the dress code, resolving patient problems and providing personal patient care.

Supervise team members and motivate them to perform to agreed standards, as well as to ensure compliance to Group's HR policies and procedures.

Train and mentor staff to improve overall quality of care.
