Job Description
We are looking for our first Finance Manager to build the financial backbone of our fast-growing tech start-up. With operations in South Africa, the Netherlands, and the UK - and rapid expansion into the UK and USA, Finance is becoming a critical domain for our business. You will report directly to the Head of Operations, taking over responsibilities he currently manages, with the ambition to establish Finance as its own dedicated function.
At the start, your focus will be on making sure our South African and Dutch bookkeepers work seamlessly together. You will ensure numbers are accurate, reports are delivered on time, and tax compliance is met across jurisdictions. This requires comfort working with international tax rules, VAT, and transfer pricing.
As the company grows, you will own SaaS performance reporting (MRR, ARR, NRR, GRR, CAC, Burn, Runway) and provide clear insights that guide leadership decisions and investor conversations.
You will also lead the shift to an in-house finance function and build a team covering FP&A, Treasury, and Financial Control. This is more than a typical finance role, it is a chance to design scalable systems, lead a high-performing team, and position Finance as a core domain in the business.
For the right person, this role can evolve into Head of Finance and a place on the leadership team - once you've proven your ability to deliver impact, build a team, and shape Finance as a strategic driver of growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the bridge between our South African and Dutch bookkeepers, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance across jurisdictions
- Manage end-to-end finance operations, Financial Control (including Xero bookkeeping oversight, reconciliations, compliance, and audit readiness), FP&A (forecasting, budgeting, and performance analysis), Treasury (cash flow, liquidity, and funding)
- Oversee payroll, commissions, reimbursements, and leave compliance, ensuring timely and accurate payments across all entities
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, VAT, transfer pricing, and statutory tax obligations in South Africa, the Netherlands, and the UK, working closely with external accountants and tax advisors
- Manage supplier payments, monitor SaaS and infrastructure costs, and negotiate favourable terms to optimise spend
- Drive revenue collection by managing invoicing, payment tracking, and overdue account follow-ups
- Own the tracking, reporting, and insight generation for key SaaS metrics (MRR, ARR, churn, CAC, NRR, GRR, burn, runway) to support leadership and investor decision-making
- Provide financial reporting and insights to the Head of Operations, CEO and leadership team, including runway, burn rate, revenue, and other SaaS KPIs to guide strategic decisions
- Support inter-company transactions, licence agreements, shareholder resolutions, and equity administration
- Contribute to fundraising readiness and investment support by preparing investor reporting packs, maintaining the cap table, and updating the data room
- Lead the transition to an internal finance function by recruiting, training, and managing a team across bookkeeping, FP&A, Treasury, and Financial Control, while implementing scalable processes and automation to support growth
- Assist with global expansion initiatives by ensuring financial processes and compliance structures scale across jurisdictions
- Financial Expertise: Strong technical understanding of accounting, tax, and compliance
- Strategic Thinking: Aligns financial management with business growth objectives
- Operational Ownership: Drives accuracy, compliance, and process improvements
- Analytical Insight: Provides data-driven recommendations for leadership decisions
- Communication & Influence: Clearly communicates complex financial information across levels
- International Perspective: Thrives in complex, multi-country environments with cross-border tax and compliance requirements
- SaaS Metrics Understanding: Strong grasp of subscription metrics (MRR, ARR, churn, CAC, NRR, GRR, burn, runway) and ability to turn them into actionable insights
- SaaS Numbers (MRR, ARR, NRR, GRR, CAC, Burn, Runway) - Delivering clear insights on core SaaS performance metrics to guide strategic and investor decisions
- % Variance of Cash vs Forecast - Improving forecasting accuracy and reducing variance between forecasted and actual cash performance
- Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) - Reducing DSO to accelerate collections and improve cash inflows
- % Customer Invoices Overdue - Minimising overdue invoices to maintain strong cash discipline and liquidity
- # Insights to Leadership Team - Providing actionable financial insights that influence leadership decisions and business outcomes
- Monthly Accounts Ready (days after month-end) - Accelerating the month-end close process to deliver timely reporting
- # Reporting Errors - Reducing reporting errors to ensure accuracy, reliability, and trust in financial data
- % Filings on Time - Maintaining full compliance with statutory filings and ensuring 100% on-time submissions
- % Transactions Reconciled - Driving reconciliation accuracy to strengthen financial controls and audit readiness
- % Supplier Invoices Paid on Time - Ensuring timely supplier payments to build and maintain strong vendor relationships
- CA (SA) with +5 years' post-articles experience
- Experience working in finance at a minimum of two companies after articles
- Solid working knowledge of VAT and transfer pricing with experience managing multi-jurisdiction compliance
- Exposure to international business environments, preferably in tech or start-ups
- Proficiency with finance systems and tools
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to align bookkeepers, advisors, and leadership
