Job Requirements Academic Knowledge

Work Environment: This position can be based in Zimbabwe or South Africa, with occasional travel to other office locations as necessary. The role may require flexible working hours to support remote teams and ensure systems are running smoothly across time zones.
Job SummaryWe are seeking a Network and Security Engineer with expertise in healthcare IT security, HL7 data exchange, and regulatory compliance. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and securing network infrastructure in a healthcare environment, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of Health Information Systems (HIS) while supporting interoperability standards such as HL7, FHIR, and DICOM. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in network security, healthcare data standards, and regulatory compliance (HIPAA, HITECH, POPIA, GDPR) and will play a key role in securing electronic health records (EHRs) and clinical data exchanges both on premise and across multiple clouds.
Key Responsibilities- Healthcare Network & Infrastructure Security: Design, implement, and maintain secure network architectures for healthcare IT environments, including hospitals, clinics, IoT and telemedicine platforms.
- Manage and secure HL7 interfaces, FHIR APIs, and data interoperability between healthcare systems (EHRs, PACS, LIS, HIS, RIS, etc.).
- Configure, maintain, and optimize firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, NAC, Cloud Security and secure VLAN segmentation to ensure network security.
- Design and manage the organization SD-WAN and its policies; Implement a ZERO Trust environment.
- Establish secure data channels allowing for health data sharing and interoperability; Create secure trusts between ACRN and partner sites.
- Troubleshoot network connectivity and integration issues related to HL7 data exchange and interoperability.
- Data Security & Compliance: Implement encryption, access control, and data loss prevention (DLP) strategies to protect HIS/EHR and sensitive patient records.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare data protection regulations (HIPAA, HITECH, POPIA, GDPR, GCP, GLP, ISO 27001).
- Conduct risk assessments, vulnerability scans, and penetration testing; Develop and enforce security policies and procedures for healthcare IT infrastructure.
- Threat Management & Incident Response: Monitor SIEM solutions for suspicious activity; Respond to cyber threats, malware, ransomware, and phishing; Lead incident response and forensic investigations; Develop disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BC) plans.
- Manage Microsoft 365 environment security (Intune, MDM, Active Directory Online).
- Interoperability & Health Data Exchange Security: Secure messaging protocols (HL7 v2.x, HL7 v3, FHIR, DICOM, X12, CDA, IHE); Collaborate with EHR vendors, medical device manufacturers, and HIEs; Monitor API security for FHIR-based applications.
- Collaboration & Continuous Improvement: Work with healthcare IT teams, compliance officers, and clinicians; Stay updated on emerging threats in healthcare cybersecurity; Provide security awareness training.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Healthcare Informatics, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in network security and IT infrastructure, preferably in a healthcare environment.
- Strong knowledge of healthcare standards and data security (HL7, FHIR, DICOM, HIPAA, HITECH, ISO 27001, POPIA).
- Hands-on experience with firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, SIEM, and endpoint security solutions.
- Proficiency in Cisco, Palo Alto, Fortinet, Juniper networking and security devices.
- Experience securing EHRs, health information exchanges (HIEs), and cloud-based health platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud for Healthcare).
- Strong understanding of medical device security, IoT security, and cloud security best practices.
- Knowledge of scripting and automation (Python, PowerShell, Bash) is an advantage.
- CCNA Security / CCNP Security
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
- Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)

About the role:
The Security Engineer will implement the organization's security policies, procedures, and standards. This role requires an in-depth understanding of current and emerging threats and technology to drive innovation and improvement in all technical areas of security.
This role requires a proven background in Cloud Application Security Operations on Azure or AWS.
This role is hybrid in JHB.
Your contribution will be:
- Manage and support vulnerability scanning tools (e.g., Tenable, Qualys, Rapid7) including scheduling, result analysis, and report generation.
- Support and enhance SIEM platforms (e.g., Splunk, QRadar) including data ingestion, parsing, correlation rules, dashboards, and alerts.
- Collaborate with DevOps, IT, and development teams to ensure proper tool integration and secure configurations across environments.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to security tool performance, configurations, and updates.
- Maintain and document tool configurations, SOPs, and knowledge base articles.
- Contribute to tool selection and evaluation processes by providing technical input and performing proof-of-concepts.
- Oversee security tooling and strategic automation as it relates to managing remediations at scale
- Assist in incident response and remediation of identified security-related events
To be successful , we think you need:
- 3+ years’ experience in software security / penetration testing role, or equivalent experience
- Experience with SIEM platforms like Splunk/QRadar etc
- Experience supporting API security tools (e.g., AWS WAF, Cloudflare, F5, Imperva)
- Blue team experience would be highly beneficial
- Some cloud experience i.e. AWS/GCP/Azure

- Administer and optimize anti-phishing, anti-malware, and anti-spoofing policies.

- Configure Safe Links, Safe Attachments, and ATP policies.
- Support investigations of email-based threats and data leakage attempts.
Web Security (Forcepoint and DMARC)
- Maintain and support the Forcepoint Web Security environment, including URL filtering, content categorization, and user policies.

- Collaborate with SOC and Blue Teams on threat correlation and data security posture assessments.
- Maintain documentation and support audit readiness.
Technical Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Purview DLP (E5).
- Proficient in Microsoft Defender for Office 365 (email hygiene, ATP, threat management).
- Experience with Forcepoint Web Security policy design, deployment, and management.
- Working knowledge of Secure Service Edge (SSE) and ZTNA concepts; Cato Networks experience preferred.
- Familiarity with security incident workflows, SIEMs (e.g., Sentinel), and PowerShell scripting.
Experience
- 5+ years in IT Security roles, with at least 2–3 focused on data security.
- Direct involvement in policy design, incident triage, and ongoing tuning of DLP/email/web security tools.
- Exposure to regulated environments with compliance reporting (e.g., financial services)
