The Quality Control Manager will oversee all aspects of quality assurance within the production environment. This includes conducting inspections, maintaining standards, and managing a small QC team. Key Responsibilities:
  • Carry out and oversee quality inspections during all production stages
  • Ensure compliance with internal standards and customer requirements

  • Maintain accurate quality records and inspection reports

We’re on the lookout for an experienced Senior Quality Control System Engineer to oversee and maintain the Quality Control Systems (QCS), Headbox Control Systems, Calendar Control Systems, CD and MD Control Systems for Sappi Mills in compliance with engineering standards whilst implementing best practices, optimize processes, and benchmark against international operations for continuous improvement.


As a Senior Quality Control System Engineer , you will be responsible to:

  • Develop QCS maintenance best practice systems, schedules, resource allocation, and budgets to meet production and QCS performance targets, aligning with the regional maintenance strategy and international standards.
  • Provide input into determining production targets, including shrinkage, standard deviation, and final product quality, benchmarking against international practices for competitiveness.
  • Maintain effective communication of Data and BUS Links between QCS, Distributive Control Systems (DCS), and Programmable Logical Systems (PLC) based on international standards.

  • Prioritize and motivate capital expenditure projects for new equipment, technology, or upgrades, ensuring alignment with international best practices.
  • Review the performance of all control loops and make improvements as necessary, benchmarking against international benchmarks on a continuous basis
  • Maintain a safe working environment for the QCS Engineering team, adhering to the Sappi SHEQ system and international safety standards.

  • Liaise with customers and suppliers to resolve quality issues
  • Manage outsourced inspection activities like Dye pen, MPI, X-Ray, AIA & Pressure Testing
  • Prepare Quality Control plans
  • Manage sample making approval process (ISIR process)
  • Internal & supplier audits
  • Ensure all quality records are maintained for traceability
  • Ensure quality assurance is built in the process
  • Conduct measurements using various measuring instruments
  • Train employees on quality control
  • Inspection equipment calibration & control
  • Defect outflow investigation
  • Jig/ Fixture control
  • Review job requirements based on product design and contractual requirements
  • Technical reviews
  • Daily planning for inspection & testing
  • Initiate, coordinate and enforce quality assurance systems
  • Train & ensure competency of employees with regards to quality
  • Ensure that all inspection tasks are performed
  • Liaise with designer, client and other stakeholders to maximize quality
  • Provide root cause analysis and execute corrective action plans
  • Prepare clear and concise reports
  • Manage the performance of all quality equipment
  • Create work instructions/ standard operating procedures
  • Ensure compliance to Quality Management Systems
  • Project management
  • Continuous improvement
  • Manage KPAs of subordinates
  • Ensure adherence to company policies and procedures
  • Ensure productivity targets are met/ Assist with expediting work
Candidates must exhibit or be able to demonstrate:
  • Prior quality control experience in a manufacturing environment
  • An ability to work in a cross functional team with challenging deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks or projects at one time
  • Computer literacy with Microsoft Office packages
  • An understanding of metals and metrology principles
  • An ability to read and understand Mechanical drawings
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 & ISO 3834 practices within a quality control environment
  • Good organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • An ability to set and improve quality standards within supply base
  • A positive and engaging attitude in dealing with people at all levels within the organization.
  • Strong leadership ability

Education/Training:
  • Grade 12
  • Tertiary qualification related to quality assurance & management
  • Welding related qualification
  • ISO 9001 Quality Management compliance training
  • Internal auditing
  • Supervisory/ Management training advantageous

Work Experience:
  • 7 Years in a quality/welding environment
  • 5 years of conducting measurements on welded/ fabricated products
  • 3 years in a supervisory/ management role
