Job Description


Interprets physician prescriptions and medication orders. Acts as a drug information resource to patients, medical staff, nursing staff and ancillary department personnel. Compounds and dispenses prescribed medications and other pharmaceuticals for patient care by performing the related duties.




  • Reviews prescriptions and orders issued by physicians or other authorized prescribers to assure accuracy and determines formulas and ingredients needed.

  • Compounds medications using standard formulas and processes, such as weighing, measuring and mixing ingredients.

  • Monitors all posting onto the patient profiles in order that accuracy, drug allergies, drug interactions, duplicate therapy, rational drug therapy and incompatibilities may be realized and better patient care received.

  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

  • Prepares IV admixtures and extemporaneous parenteral products under aseptic conditions.

  • Directs Pharmacy Department personnel engaged in admixing, packaging and labeling pharmaceuticals.

  • Verifies all pharmaceuticals prepared and delivered by pharmacy technicians (or any other appropriate personnel) to locations for (medical cabinet) storage or immediate administration is safe and effective for patient use.

  • Answers questions, provides information and recommendations to physicians, nurses, patients and other healthcare professionals on the appropriate use of medications, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, storage, etc.

  • Assists in patient medication evaluation, including utilization review, dosing evaluation and the appropriate use of medications.

  • Assists in teaching programs (departmental, medical, nursing, community).

  • Endorses policies and procedures of the department and of the hospital.

  • Ensures the maintenance and proper operation of equipment and supplies in the work areas.

  • Maintains established procedures concerning quality control, security of controlled substances and disposal of hazardous waste.

  • Enters data into the computer system (Pharmacy program), such as appropriate patient information, prescribed medications and cost, and helps to maintain patient profiles and charge system.

  • Instructs students and other medical personnel on matters pertaining to the Pharmacy Department.

  • Reviews and monitors drug therapy that requires dosing adjustments as authorized by the physician.

  • Provides pharmaceutical care to all ages of patients from newborns to the elderly. Understands that there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients, and knows where to find appropriate information.

  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.

  • Assists the Pharmacy Manager and Director of Clinical Services and Pharmacy on special assignments.

  • Responds appropriately to acute illness situations, specifically in cardiac arrest in the form of "Code Blue" circumstances.

  • Supervises at least one to two (1-2) members of the Pharmacy Department staff on a regular basis (at least daily).

  • Assists the Pharmacy Director with responsibilities in accordance with the organization's mission, policy and any applicable laws.

  • May assist in the hiring process of pharmacy personnel, including interviews, training, planning, assigning and directing work, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Demonstrates ability to read, analyze and interpret pharmacy-related journals.

  • Demonstrates ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the hospital staff.

  • Demonstrates ability to write articles for publication and ability to effectively present information to management, medical staff, hospital staff and public groups.

  • Demonstrates ability apply necessary advanced mathematical concepts, such as exponents and logarithms.

  • Demonstrates ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as dosage calculations, formulation of pharmaceutical preparations and data analysis.

  • Demonstrates ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

  • Demonstrates ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract variables.


Education Requirements:



  • Doctorate of Pharmacy degree or Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent.

  • Graduated from an accredited School of Pharmacy.

  • Current Pharmacist certification or licensure in the State of Nebraska.

  • Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population obtained either in school education or subsequent training.

  • BLS and ACLS certifications must be maintained.

    • Renew or obtain BLS certification within 3 months of hire

    • Renew or obtain ACLS certification within 6 months of hire

Work Output

Primary purpose of the job includes but not limited to:

Operational Activities

  • The QA pharmacist is responsible for the service delivery and quality assurance of all parcels to be delivered to the patient by Medipost.
  • The pharmacist will be responsible for checking and assuring a final check on all quantities, dosages, directions, therapeutic validation, storage conditions as well as correct medication issued to the patient. This will include, but not be limited to chronic medication, Oncology medication, specialized medication items and acute items.
  • The QA pharmacist will ensure that special requests and instructions from patients are adhered to while ensuring GPP compliance.
  • The QA pharmacist will be responsible for any additional operational roles such as assisting with compliance-related tasks including housekeeping, pest control in the pharmacy, route and box validations, schedule 6 control, medication destruction, etc.
  • Duties may include assisting with SOP updates, training, tutoring, and mentoring assistants.
  • Quality assurance is essential, and quantity output will also be a key factor in timely delivery of medication to our patients. The pharmacist will need to prioritize work according to urgency and help minimize time-wasting factors in the working environment.
  • Ensure extra quality by checking:
  • Labels are applied neatly,
  • Overall presentation of medicine is professional and content is accurate,

Labelling and Packing of Parcels

To maintain a minimum average of 55 scripts per hour as per production requirements while ensuring work is processed according to priority scheduled collection date, ensuring that the daily targets are reached (440/495 scripts). Ensuring that all the PMP handled are neat, correctly labelled, belong to the correct group box & manifest, and no peeling of PMP sticker (written warning to be issued for service failure error).

Accuracy and Neatness

Maintain a high level of accuracy and neatness (avoid errors), mixing of stock (ensuring replenishment of stock according to the correct province after QA check of that particular province is done) – no incidents reported.

Procedures

Work strictly according to department SOPs. Ensure all company policies are adhered to at all times. Leave Management

Job Description

Primary purpose of the job: Providing proper patient care as per GPP (Good Pharmacy Practice) regulations. Mailbox & Rejection management to ensure SLA and Urgent compliance. This includes but is not limited to:

  1. Accurate capturing of new or repeat prescriptions, oncology, acute, chronic or private medication.
  2. Arranging and follow up on authorisation and provide relevant feedback.
  3. Compliance to SLA requirements by completing mailbox profiles, rejected blind checking, action diaries and follow-up within required timelines.
  4. Correct handling of paper claims submission and follow-up on payments where required.
  5. Attending to and responding in a professional manner to email messages, incoming calls or enquiries received from patients, SPN’s and management.
  6. Handling of clinical discussions with patients and health care professionals or SPN’s.
  7. Assisting with tracking queries and pre-alerting deliveries.
  8. Management of credit returns by correctly logging pick-ups and following up on return and credits.
  9. Ensuring stock care and stock management in terms of all short-dated stock, dormant stock, high value stock items and assisting with bi-annual stock take if and when required.
  10. Attending to stat 30, stat 32 and stat 33 stock rejections if required.
  11. MML/MPR management and compliance where possible and applicable.
  12. Handling and validation of Section 21 and Patient Assisted programs (PAF) orders where required.
  13. Per patient item ordering on applicable high value or low-usage items.
  14. Claiming of INV’s received.
  15. Attending to OUT OF WIP notifications.
  16. Resolving rejections and prioritising adding scripts to WIP.
  17. Assisting administrator in the cluster as and when required.
  18. Attending SOP training and revision training.
  19. Compliance with Company Policies, Procedures and SOP’s.
  20. Profile maintenance.
  21. Training of new pharmacist assistants within the cluster.
  22. Requesting security checks on possible replacement parcels.

Operational requirements:

  • Completion of daily work according to level requirement.
  • Accuracy when blind checking.
  • Attending to action diaries.
  • SLA compliance.
  • MML Adherence.
  • Calls and emails received handled professionally and confidentially with accurate information provided in a time cautious manner.
  • Queries appropriately followed up and finalized.

Customer service and internal process compliance (Quality assurance):

  • IR intervention (QA, IPC, Stock returns log, other).
  • Customer Satisfaction (Compliments).
  • Focus on minimising errors and customer related complaints.
  • SOP compliance.

Staff behaviour:

  • Productive and available according to hours stipulated in contract.
  • ESS management of leave according to company policies and requirements.
  • Eco time compliance with daily clocking procedures in accordance with company policies and requirements.
  • TWB option used correctly by notifying manager and subsequently completing ESS process.
  • Housekeeping compliance at 100% as per company expectation on quarterly audit.

Minimum Requirements:

Grade 12.

EXPERIENCE: Previous experience in a courier or retail pharmacy as well as oncology experience will be advantageous.

Need to be registered at SAPC.

TRAINING REQUIRED: Medipost APP system training, SLA training, company policies and procedures, computer literacy, MHRS on-line authorisation system, ESS, etc.

COMPETENCIES: Verbal and written communication skills, listening skills, patience, empathy, conflict resolution, customer service orientation, accuracy, data capturing skills, interpersonal skills and relationship building skills, able to work under pressure, adaptability, effective time management, detail oriented.

Specific Requirements/Other important information:

  • Focused and responsible.
  • Sense of urgency to nature of the job.
  • Availability to assist with creating or updating processes to improve efficiency.
  • Willingness to provide interdepartmental assistance if and when needed (WIC/Order processing/Call centre/Production).
  • Willingness to work overtime if required by manager.
  • Ensuring POPIA compliance.
  • Level 6 internal appointment from Production.
  • Attendance of Pharmacy Forums and product training will be highly recommended.

Other important information:

  • Willingness to work overtime when required by management.
  • Continuous professional development – attending training or forums.
  • Willingness to assist with stock take if required at least once per year.
  • Willingness to assist or attend training in other departments such as the Walk in Pharmacy and Production.
  • Inter-departmental training and assistance as needed.
