Mechanical Engineering-Mechanical & Fire Engineering-Durban
Seeking a highly motivated and technically proficient Mechanical Engineer with a strong focus on mechanical building services and fire protection systems . This position plays a critical role in the design, development, and implementation of mechanical systems, including wet services and fire engineering solutions for a range of commercial, industrial, and residential projects.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of applicable codes, practical design knowledge, and hands-on experience with CAD software, enabling them to deliver safe, sustainable, and cost-effective engineering solutions.
Requirement:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in mechanical building services , with a strong emphasis on wet services and fire protection .
Sound knowledge of local and international fire engineering standards and building regulations , including SANS 10400 Part T.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit is essential.
Strong attention to detail, technical acumen, and problem-solving ability.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Valid drivers license with the ability to travel to project sites as required.
Registration with ECSA or working toward professional registration will be an advantage.
Experience with hydraulic calculations and fire risk assessments.
Familiarity with BIM processes and integrated project delivery methods.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and coordination of wet services (cold and hot water systems, drainage, rainwater harvesting, etc.) and fire protection systems (sprinkler layouts, hydrants, hose reels, etc.) in accordance with SANS codes , NFPA, and other relevant standards.
- Develop detailed design drawings , technical specifications, and documentation using AutoCAD and Revit .
- Collaborate with architects, contractors, and other engineers to ensure alignment of designs with project requirements and timelines.
- Conduct site inspections and quality assurance reviews to ensure project delivery aligns with engineering designs.
- Prepare and present project reports, technical submissions, and compliance documentation.
- Provide input into energy-efficient and sustainable design solutions where applicable

Purpose of Position:
Complement Recruitment are recruiting for a Mechanical Engineer - GCC Utilities for a permanent position based in eThekwini, Durban, KwaZulu Natal. The primary responsibility is to ensure effective, energy efficient operations of utilities for the line and plant & keeping utilities equipments performances within bench mark limits & execution of themes related to energy & cost savings. All in order to maximize the machine up times for productions & implementing planned, predictive & proactive maintenance.

Minimum Requirements:
- Matric; National Diploma / Degree in Mechanical Engineering & GCC other related Certifications
- GCC (Government Certificate of Competency) Certificate in the process or awaiting your certificate
- Relevant maintenance and project management experience, preferably in a beverage or fast moving consumables goods environment
- 5+ years strong mechanical experience in the field of Thermic Heaters, compressor, chillers or water treatment plants or similar preferred
- Managed a plants mechanical and utilities department.
- Mechanical maintenance of manufacturing industries - Pulp/Paper/Chemical/Resin Plant & Utilities Operations
- Compliance, Job Knowledge, Quality Orientation, Planning and Execution, Achievement Orientation, Communication, Analysis, Team Working
- Ability to be self-managed and multitask; Excellent communication skills
- Proficiency in MS Office/ Excel Skills & Oracle (advantageous)
- Experience and skillset: coal boilers, steam systems, cooling towers, refrigeration systems, air compressors, waste water treatment plants, water filtration (UF/RO), valves, pumps, piping systems, heat exchangers, electrical systems, instrumentation and civil work
Role Overview:
- Ensuring effective environmental, health, safety and risk management to local standards
- Ensure that world class asset care and maintenance principles are introduced and adhered to (efficient asset utilization)
- Compile, manage and control maintenance budget including capex, effective control of all project funding requests (i.e. abnormal maintenance and capital
- To manage performance and people development within department
- Managing maintenance projects and feasibility studies
- Plan utilities availability and planned shutdowns and assist with compiling short and long term equipment replacement plan
- Develop and Management of quality systems (ISO 9001/2000) in responsibility area
- Ensure compliance to OHSACT and all Company Risk, Health and Safety procedures, including statutory requirements
- Ensure crew complies and adheres to all relevant policies, procedures, work instruction and SOPs
- Develop and implement annual departmental business plans and assist in sites business plan
- Innovation and business improvements in support of operational goals
- Ensure maintenance plans for equipment is current and drive ICC compliance
- Problem solving and technical guidance of the maintenance teams
- Ensure that plant maintenance standards are met and RCM principles are applied
- Management and co-ordination of an efficient maintenance function throughout the plant
- Reduction of unplanned downtime, optimise utilization and efficiency of plant resources
- Drive sustainability agenda across site
- Manage multi-disciplinary projects from inception until final commissioning
- Conduct all the required risk assessments and Hazop processes in compliance with company requirements
- Develop project schedules to ensure projects are closely managed
- Lead the process of projects FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) and PAT (Performance Acceptance Test)
- Ensure that staff is trained and signed off on operation of new equipment
- Develop project close out to ensure snags are closed and project formally handed over to the site
- Managing and maintaining site facilities and infrastructure
Other Duties:
- Execution of scheduled, preventive & proactive maintenance
- Ensuring spares availability; Ensuring TF Heaters efficient Operations, by avoiding losses
- Tuning of Burners for Air Fuel Ratio with respect to CO2 & O2%
- Attending Losses due to Insulations & Leakages through TDO Doors of Both Lines
- Minimize repetitive breakdowns; Best maintenance practices implementation
- Optimize the expanses by proper tracking; prepare documentations
- Conduction Energy Audit to identify the Gaps; Surveillance audit for certification
- Maintain Water softener & DM plant performance for rated parameters & OBR
- Maintain best possible COC
- Maintaining Cooling Tower Fills cleaning
- Execution of Planned themes
- Close monitoring for ETP operations & out let parameters
- Proper tuning of TF Heater Burner for Air & Fuel Ratio
- Daily Monitoring of Gas consumptions with respect to plants running
- Monitoring equipments running as per plant operations
- Monitoring all the parameters on each shift basis, Monitoring Expenses on regular basis
- Shift Planning & performance reporting; Day to day activities related to department.
