Job Description

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for identifying and prioritizing high frequency breakdowns as well as downtimes by analysing the production and maintenance data.
  • Conduct root cause analysis to determine underlying issues causing downtime.
  • Ensure that there are improvement proposals developed for each root cause including technical concepts, cost benefit analysis and feasibility.
  • Designing machine or process modifications (component redesign, system changes and process flow improvements) to address the root cause.
  • Develop and document step-by-step corrective action plans, procedures and technical specifications aligned to the downtime improvement goal.
  • Ensure the successful execution and commissioning of improvement plans, and monitor the results to verify the downtime has been reduced and the machine availability improves.
  • Optimize maintenance tools (CMMS or manual systems) to improve asset uptime, support integration and drive process efficiency.
  • Mapping and designing standardized maintenance logs, service schedules and performance checklists aligned with production priorities.
  • Documenting planned maintenance processes and translating them into system-compatible formats for future ERP integration.
  • Identifying and eliminating inefficiencies in the reactive maintenance structure through procedural redesign.
  • Ensure new or optimized maintenance processes are tested, validated with production data and implemented across the departments.
  • Conceptualizing machine and system improvements.
  • Ensure there is alignment with R&D, production and maintenance stakeholders during the development of improvement concepts.
  • Collaborate with the design and drafting department regarding approved concepts into finalized CAD drawings and technical documents.
  • Provide technical input, validate the bill of materials and reviewing specifications.
  • Driving and commissioning physical implementation and validation of design changes, etc.
  • Draft proposals, scope, timelines and risk analysis for improvement initiatives.
  • Obtain approvals via project proposals, specifications, NPRs or ECPs.
  • Planning and managing improvement project.
  • Ensure the projects stay within budget.
  • Update project tracking and take lead with commissioning and handover of implemented changes.
  • Weekly reporting on progress on corrective actions, root causes, proposed solutions and implementation status.
  • Ensure the teams are kept updated on corrective actions.
  • Maintain and update the corrective action tracking dashboard.
  • Make recommendations on reprioritizing improvement actions based on feedback.
  • Ensure the company specifications and documentation is updated by delegating to Administrators.
Requirements:
  • BTech / BEng in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Matric certification.
  • Advanced mathematical skills.
  • At least 5-7 years experience in a similar role / manufacturing background.
  • Fully bilingual in Afrikaans and English.
  • Own transport.
  • Technical skills capabilities.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

    Industrial Engineer

    Role Outline


    • Delivers assigned CI projects to improve loss-making sites and contracts by enhancing productivity through process redesign and improvement.
    • Supports contractual requirements for continuous improvement (cost reduction) using the same methods.
    • Identifies best practices available to DHL in terms of processes, equipment, and tools for regional replication.
    • Supports the implementation of standardization and productivity improvement initiatives.
    • Be a recognized subject matter expert on industrial engineering topics, with a good understanding of site/campus operations.
    • Address identified safety issues through improvements in processes or equipment.
    • Deliver CI initiatives with clear and measurable targets.
    • Develop CI Case Studies and share them with the business as needed.
    • Utilize First Choice tools like PRS & DMAIC to drive CI projects at sites.
    • Collaborate effectively with the OMS CI team, site teams, and site/campus management to achieve results.
    • Conduct time studies and data analysis to support CI initiatives.


    Key Responsibilities

    Operations:


    • Provide engineering support to operations through analysis, process mapping, optimisation, and standardisation.
    • Capture and communicate (comparative) productivity and cost indices.
    • Use standard industrial engineering techniques in facilities, as appropriate, to optimise operations.
    • Compare operational productivities against expected levels and identify causes of variation.
    • Provide support for implementation of operational changes.
    • Ensure that standardised processes and best practices are designed and implemented.
    • Support the roll-out of strategic priority programs where engineering skills are needed.
    • Work alongside IT specialists to analyse, collate, and develop process logic that fits into the system template, allowing it to function as expected.
    • Work with the OMS CI community to identify areas of waste and support its removal or reduction.


    Customer Management:


    • Help internal customers understand how proposed operations or operational changes will affect service performance and/or cost.
    • Become a trusted advisor to internal customers by demonstrating a good knowledge of operations and engineering principles.


    People Management:


    • Gain knowledge of good practices and ideas from outside the organization and publicize them within.
    • Train, coach, and mentor individuals on sites to become site CI Champions.


    Qualifications & Experience

    Education:


    • Industrial Engineering qualification is essential.
    • Six Sigma Green Belt / First Choice Master Bronze/Silver.
    • Membership of relevant institutions and other sources of expertise.
    • Proven advanced ability to use MS Office tools, such as MS Excel, MS Word, etc.


    Experience:


    • 3 or more years of experience is required.
    • Working in a culturally diverse environment.
    • Familiarity with existing DHL operations within geographical scope.
    • Working in a challenging environment with targets and deadlines.
    • Well-developed understanding of project management tools and processes.
    • Change and relationship management skills, combined with strong communication skills (verbal, written, graphic).
    • The application of continuous improvement concepts and elements, including Six Sigma.
    • Working with engineering tools such as value stream mapping, work study methodology, etc.
    • Strong background in relevant mathematical modelling and statistical analysis.
    • Relevant within the Cluster/Country.
