Job Description

Why Clipboard Health Exists:

We exist to lift as many people up the socioeconomic ladder as possible. We dramatically improve lives, by letting healthcare professionals turn extra time and ambition into career growth and financial opportunity. We achieve this with our app-based marketplace that connects healthcare facilities and healthcare professionals, allowing healthcare professionals to book on-demand shifts and healthcare facilities to access on-demand talent. Our mission is to enable healthcare professionals to work when and where they want, and to enable healthcare facilities to meet their talent needs.

About Clipboard Health:

Clipboard Health is a post-Series C, extremely fast-growing tech startup with classic two-sided network effects, revolutionizing the market for healthcare talent. We are a diverse and inclusive company with a global, remote team. We have been named one of YC’s Top Companies for two years running, and have grown 25x across all key metrics in the last 18 months. There has never been a more exciting time to join our growing team and help us serve even more healthcare professionals and healthcare facilities, who can then better serve patients. To learn more about the culture at Clipboard Health, take a look at our culture hub here.

We are a globally distributed team with folks from the United States, Canada, Chile, Mongolia, Turkey, India, Madagascar, Ukraine, Indonesia, Brazil, Colombia… and more. Our values center around customer centricity, urgency, curiosity, and ownership. We are all empowered to fix the problems we see, there are no “toes” to be stepped on. A team went off and created a new SaaS product, another team rewrote a core service under a new architecture. We believe in our collective mission and do what it takes to move the needle on that goal.

What you’ll do

  • You will be responsible for your team’s process, delivery, and execution. Ensuring that the team can work optimally and with high quality.
  • You will partner with product managers, and our customers, to create your team’s roadmap.
  • While you may not be involved in day-to-day coding, you will be reviewing your team’s work and providing technical guidance and coaching. This involves reviewing PRs, architecture and design documents and ensuring that the output of your team is of high quality and solves the customer’s problems.
  • You will be responsible for managing your team’s performance. This means proactively identifying and rectifying the impact of low performance and giving immediate and actionable feedback.
  • We value a growth mindset, and as an engineering manager, you will be responsible for helping your engineers grow to their full potential.
  • Every individual at Clipboard Health has an impact on the business. As an Engineering Manager, we will look to you for input on streamlining our engineering processes, helping craft our goals, and raising the bar for the technical teams at the company. At Clipboard Health we say “We don’t have any toes to step on”. If you see a problem, you fix it.
  • As a fast-paced team that is constantly growing, you will participate in all stages of the hiring process.
  • We give constant feedback and highly value transparency. You’ll have a lot of conversations in open forums, and as a curious team that values “first-principles thinking”, you can expect questions and feedback on these conversations.

What you bring to the table

  • At least 6 years of software development experience and 2+ years of experience leading software development professionals (either as an Engineering Manager, Tech Lead or Founder)
  • Experience leading agile and high-performing teams in a fast-paced, geographically dispersed environment.
  • Ability to identify and manage performance issues swiftly as well as coaching skills to empower developers at various levels. You must be comfortable with having difficult conversations, addressing problems head-on, and being decisive about outcomes.
  • A deep appreciation for customers and the ability to navigate ambiguous customer problems and translate them into actionable solutions.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Able to break down problems and solutions into their component parts and explain each component to fellow engineers and non-technical stakeholders rather than relying on reasoning by proxy or relying on best practices
  • Hands-on development and system design experience.
  • Ability to work equally well with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with growing teams: hiring, retaining, and onboarding top talent.

Why Clipboard Health?

  • 100% remote, flexible working hours.
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Async first, with sync collaboration as it’s needed.
  • This is a high-impact role. From the hiring, onboarding, team execution, and talent practices to customer impact, new verticals, and technical uplevelling of the team: there’s room for improvement on it all, and we are looking for people who want to build the new era of Clipboard Health with us.

We’re looking for tech heroes with the va-va-voom to help us unite teams behind one vision, empower their potential, and inspire them with our One Team spirit.

The aim is to get everyone to the future faster. By turning teams into the movements that power digital transformation.

You’ve got the beans to motivate teams of all sizes and manage development plans for yourself and others, knowing which areas to focus on to keep things moving.

You actively shape/own a domain community, whether that’s blogging, events or webinars. You have an entrepreneurial mindset that means you look for opportunities wherever you think you can dig them up, and you take pride in leaving everything you touch better than you found it.

Matching your values with ours

Our values affect everything we do – and yours will too. So we’ll need you to have integrity (of course) and be a passionate, approachable pragmatist who’s always looking for ways to shake things up.

Your responsibilities

You’ll be responsible for a wide range of activities including:

  • Leading people and building high-performing teams that leverage technology to deliver critical business priorities and solve complex problems for our clients
  • Taking ownership of engagement and client relationships
  • Helping clients create solutions to their business challenges leveraging all of our practices
  • Technical and practical input into the Daemon Way — our overall engagement model
  • Shaping engagements from a team, skills, requirements and commercial perspective, working closely with the resourcing function to resource those people.
  • Defining work packages and planning for success
  • Communicating complex technical problems in simple non-technical terms
  • Leading one or more teams to deliver what the client needs
  • Building and managing a network of relationships at relevant levels
  • Taking an active role in identifying opportunities at existing clients, new clients, or within your own network
  • Collaborating with Account Directors, the sales team and other SMEs, through pre-sales, discovery and proof of concept, to win new pieces of work
  • Identifying and generating new client opportunities, moving client dialogue from a discussion of ideas to scoping work
  • Managing stakeholder relationships, supporting Governance, and ensuring we deliver against expectations
  • Supporting teams on challenging engagements and/or with challenging clients — our clients are demanding and we exceed expectations
  • End to end engagement ownership
  • People management and mentorship of less experienced consultants
  • Proactive solution development for both clients and Daemon — if you see something not working, we expect you to step up
  • Being visible as a leader in Daemon and in the industry
  • Building technical strategies for Daemon and our clients
  • Community leadership, building communities within Daemon and spearheading technical innovation
Your experience
  • Deep experience in one or more technical domains and/or market verticals

  • A strong understanding of practice principles and engagements, ways of working, best practices, leadership skills, risk management, stakeholder management

We live and work by our values – in everything we do, we work with integrity, and we’re approachable, pragmatic, progressive and passionate. Because we know that fostering shared values and a One Team spirit can be contagious. We’re out to create movements.

Because movements power digital transformation.

We’re all about the energy that comes from confidence, camaraderie and a shared purpose. About unearthing the full potential of every engagement, to inspire and empower our clients, and leave them stronger than when we arrived.

So we empower you to deliver, with an open, honest culture where you can be yourself. And we give you mentoring, training, and plenty of scope for collaboration. Because we also want Daemon to be all about you.

But it’s not all work, work, work – we’re always finding excuses to get together, with regular socials, clubs and team lunches. When the time is right we throw seasonal parties, with gifts from us for everyone, and awesome extras. Like the Daemon FestDVal: we invite you, your friends and family (and dogs) to fool around with silly stuff like a drum workshop, laser tag and bouncy castles, listen to live music, and stuff yourselves with jerk chicken, veggie curry and donuts. Nice!

Training and development

We love it when Daemonites want to get certified in new or existing technologies. Not only will we pay for you to do it – there might even be a bit of a bonus in it for you. We also make sure that you get internal training on the new products you need.

Our platform combines smart tech, deep financial expertise, and a unique approach to financial advice. We're growing rapidly, backed by major investors including Summit Africa, Futuregrowth, African Rainbow Capital, and Naspers Foundry.

As we scale, we believe that engineering management is fundamentally about creating the conditions for exceptional teams to thrive. The Engineering Manager role sits at the heart of this philosophy - bridging the crucial gap between technical excellence and human potential. You'll shape not just what we build, but how we build it and who we become as an engineering organisation.

Our fully remote team primarily uses Clojure for backends and a mixture of ClojureScript and TypeScript for frontends. We're organised as cross-functional agile squads with engineers, financial experts, designers, and product managers.

What you'll do

As Engineering Manager, you'll sit at the crucial intersection between people leadership and delivery enablement, reporting to our SVP Engineering. You'll have direct line management for 7-9 engineers across 3-4 squads whilst partnering with Tech Leads and Product Managers to ensure effective delivery.

People Leadership

Own the career development of your direct reports through clear performance expectations, regular 1:1s, and targeted coaching. Foster an engineering culture of excellence, learning, and psychological safety whilst representing the engineering team in cross-functional forums.

Delivery Enablement

Partner with Tech Leads and Product Managers to navigate trade-offs, remove blockers, and maintain quality standards. Support prioritisation with business context, facilitate cross-squad dependencies, and ensure predictable delivery cadences.

Recruitment & Growth

Lead hiring processes from definition through onboarding, making key hiring decisions whilst building our engineering talent pipeline and employer brand.

Who we're looking for

You're an experienced engineering leader with an intense interest in understanding people and helping them be more effective in teams. You've had a positive effect on others' careers and know how to repeat that success. You've learned from tough people experiences and worked effectively with people very different from yourself.

Essential experience
  • 10+ years professional software development experience

  • Prior engineering management experience with proven people development track record

  • Experience supporting delivery across multiple technical workstreams

  • Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complex organisational dynamics

  • Experience with performance management and career development

What will set you apart
  • Track record of improving delivery predictability whilst balancing technical debt with feature delivery

  • Experience with Clojure and/or JavaScript environments (helps you offer more specific guidance)

  • Background in fintech or adjacent regulated industries

  • Experience scaling engineering teams during rapid growth periods

  • History of successfully working in matrix organisational structures

Success looks like
  • Team Health : Improved retention, engagement scores, and team satisfaction

  • Delivery Performance : Increased predictability, velocity, and quality metrics

  • Leadership Effectiveness : Reduced escalations to senior leadership

  • Talent Development : Growth in technical and leadership capabilities within your team

  • Recruitment Success : Effective time-to-fill, quality of hires, and onboarding

Working with us

Lifecheq values technical depth, autonomy, and clear thinking. You'll be part of a capable team that enjoys solving hard problems together and takes pride in doing things properly. It's a collaborative, engineering-driven environment where well-reasoned decisions carry weight and your ideas will be taken seriously.

This is a fully remote role requiring fluency in English and availability during core hours (10:00-16:00 GMT+2). For South African residents, this will be a permanent position; otherwise, a contract arrangement.

We take the development of our people very seriously and will work with you to carve out your success plan, accelerate your career, and make a real difference in the lives of real people seeking better lives.

We are searching for an experienced technical leader with a coaching mindset to empower our growing engineering team (3 engineers). You’ll foster individual growth through thoughtful guidance and mentorship, creating a respectful and collaborative environment. • 3+ years of experience in managing & growing teams, establishing a team structure, and ensuring team wellbeing, ideally in a remote and async setting.
  • 6+ years of experience leading projects.
  • Proven track record of technical leadership, managing projects and multi-year roadmaps.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to design and implement scalable, maintainable software architectures.
  • Strong expertise in conducting code reviews, identifying potential technical issues or risks, and suggesting improvements.

Job Description

About The Role

At Grafana Labs, our department builds products to make it easy to detect, respond and learn from incidents with minimal toil. Our products are built on top of Grafana’s open-source observability platform, integrating alerting, slos, on-call, and incident management. We are looking for an Engineering Manager to help us grow and develop our Incident Response Management platform. This platform includes both OnCall response and Incident resolution collaboration solutions. Our managers take an active role in creating a healthy and productive environment for our engineers. They are expected to guide cross-team collaboration, tune team practices, facilitate communication, resolve blockers, and coach each team member in their development. As we grow, we’re aiming to improve our performance, increase our reliability, and delight our users every step of the way.

Requirements

  • The core focus of the role is on people management, but you should have enough technical skills/understanding of our stack to manage a highly technical team/product.
  • You will act as an execution leader and work with your peers and Grafana Product & UX teams to ensure the roadmap is defined and up-to-date.
  • You have a strong technical background and are capable of engaging in technical conversations and challenging teams to arrive at strong technical decisions themselves.
  • You will be comfortable working with engineering teams who have a strong sense of autonomy in their decision-making, be it technical or product-focused.
  • While you’re great with people and adept at managing relationships, you still keep up-to-date with technical trends and shifts to understand better the challenges ahead.
  • Ideally, you will have a Computer Science degree or equivalent experience and have worked as a software engineer before moving into management.
  • Familiarity with public Cloud and SRE/DevOps concepts & struggles would be a strong advantage.

Your Day-to-day Will Include

  • Leading Regular 1:1s to ensure your direct reports are motivated, engaged, and learning.
  • Coaching and mentoring your direct reports.
  • Providing continuous feedback to engineers to ensure that they can add value while maintaining high standards.
  • Contributing to and reviewing design documents for upcoming features.
  • Guiding engineers in effective cross-functional collaboration inside and outside the team.
  • Assisting the team in breaking down features into iterative tasks.
  • Collaborating with Product, UX, leadership, and engineers to help define and influence product strategy, roadmaps, and technical designs.
  • Growing the team working with PeopleOps to attract and hire talent.
