Job Purpose/Objectives of a Mobile Crane Operator
To provide high-quality lifting services to our customers, ensuring the safety of employees, customers, and the public.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities of a Mobile Crane Operator
- Work according to manufacturer’s instructions at all times.
- Adhere to road traffic regulations.
- Ensure PPE is worn appropriately.
- Use outriggers correctly and ensure they are used on level ground.
- Set and check the functioning of the rated capacity limiter and indicator.
- Use manual handling tools correctly, e.g., Outrigger Pans.
- Liaise with Site Manager/Project Manager upon arrival on site.
- Resist pressures to carry out unsafe operations.
- Interpret and apply information from reports and duty charts concerning crane operation and safety.
- Be aware of wind and climatic effects on the crane and load.
- Take necessary actions to avoid dangerous situations, including stopping operations if needed.
- Operate fire suppressant equipment if fitted.
- Access and depart the crane safely using ladders and grab rails.
- Participate in training for specific crane models, rigging, and maintenance, and familiarize with all crane documentation.
- Continuously seek improvements in operational procedures within the business.

Description:
Under the direction of the Manager, Mechanical Operations and Maintenance and/or leadership of the Lead Hand Engineer, the incumbent is responsible for the operations and maintenance in the building(s) assigned where a Fourth (4th) Class Operating Engineer Certificate is required either by law or due to the complexity of the operation and/or critical services provided for building environment and Faculty. The engineer is responsible for the safe and economical operation and maintenance of all mechanical and associated equipment and services in their area of responsibility.
Typical Duties:
The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of responsibility involved in this job; they in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated:
- regular rounds to check mechanical equipment and perform needed mechanical services;
- ensures continuous efficiency of all mechanical equipment services and faculty equipment;
- provides running maintenance by checking lube levels of compressors and adjustments to all equipment andcontrols serving areas such as computer rooms, laboratories, classrooms, offices, special faculty cold rooms/warm rooms, etc.;
- answers and reacts promptly to all trouble calls or alarms from buildings;
- reviews computer printouts and alarms and takes appropriate action;
- co-ordinates and/or assists outside contractors and University of Toronto Trades Services when work isperformed during shift;
- housekeeping: painting, sweeping floors, cleaning piping, boilers and equipment;
- responds to off duty calls to correct emergency situations and problems; and
- maintains daily log sheets on operating equipment and records all important events that occur during shift.
Education: High School graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience plus a Fourth (4th) Class Operating Engineer Certification valid in the Province of Ontario.
Experience: Must have a good working knowledge ofthe operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment, including refrigeration, heating (e.g. boilers) and airhandling systems, and ability to comprehend and apply environmental control principles. Must have basic electrical knowledge. Basic proficiency in standard office computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows OS) and familiarity with computerized Building Automation Systems or other computerized control systems.
Other: Must have: good diagnostic and record keeping skills, the ability to communicate effectively (both orally and written), strong customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others. Building Environmental Systems Certificate an asset.
Shift Details: Regular 8 hour shifts, 40 hours per week. Must be available day, afternoon and night shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Shift: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

Responsibilities
- Running diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairing of hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and fuel systems on heavy construction equipment.
- Completes all required preventative maintenance operations including lubrications, fluid changes, and minor diesel engine maintenance.
- Completes accurate written records of work performed.
- Provide education to customers on equipment operation and performance.
- Travel within assigned region, as needed, to customer job sites to provide equipment training, maintenance, and repairs.
- Mentor and train apprentice technicians/mechanics.

- Experience with OEM diagnostic software (e.g. Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, etc.)
- Familiarity with PLC and telemetry systems
- Prior exposure to underground mining machinery and equipment
- Certification in OEM-specific diagnostics and systems
