Job Description

-The Shift Boss: Mining is accountable for the coordination of all relevant mining activities as set out in the mining plan.

This person is accountable for:

  • Coordinating and monitoring mining activities to ensure adherence to mine standards and operational targets.
  • Supervision and operational control of underground crusher chambers, apron feeders, conveyor belts and shafts loading stations.
  • Supervising and coordination of ground handling activities in order to achieve daily, weekly and monthly production targets
  • Planning of all mining activities in accordance with mining and other schedules and allocating resources as required.
  • Coordinating shift hand over by checking relevant documentation, the required physical mining activities and available resources, and communicating these to team members of the relevant mining crew.
  • Performing identified administrative duties according to legal and procedural requirements.
  • This position requires the incumbent to live in Musina / Blouberg and travel to Venetia Mine for work purposes.

Qualifications

Key Performance Areas

  • Ensure legal, safety, environmental and hygiene standards are complied with and maintained within area of responsibility.
  • Interpret organisational requirements for the section, to compile and develop a risk log with appropriate mitigation solutions that align with short, medium- and long-term Strategic Business Plan objectives.
  • Implement policies and develop procedures to ensure adherence to SHE, Engineering and Operational standards.
  • Allocate and manage the utilisation of financial resources and value add to optimise engineering availability and life cycle management of equipment.
  • Management and co-ordination of team and resources to execute maintenance and operational plans.
  • Stakeholder management: liaison with maintenance, operational & support function personnel to derive and execute fit for purpose engineering solutions according to sound risk management practices.
  • Direct the development, motivation and utilisation of human resources for the section to ensure a competent knowledge base for continued success within area of responsibility.
  • Coordinate the development, management and enhancement of maintenance strategies and plans to ensure optimal uptime and reliability of equipment within area of responsibility. (i.e. Fixed plant: Blue, Pink and Red Areas)

  • Management of project and construction activities within area of responsibility.
  • Ensure equipment maintenance strategies are operationalised into effective work packages and tactics.
  • Ensure all work is planned, scheduled, executed and monitored and all legal appointment/ statutory requirements are executed.
  • Implement critical Plant and Equipment strategies / tactics and ensure that these deliver to the defined availability, reliability and cost / operated hour within the lifecycle model and production plan.

Qualifications
The successful incumbent must meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical) or equivalent.
  • Government Certificate of Competency (Mines)
  • Minimum of 10 years of extensive experience in underground Trackless Mobile Machinery (TMM), vertical shaft infrastructure, and major underground infrastructure. This includes but is not limited to main pump stations, degritters, MV and LV electrical reticulation, ventilation fans, and ventilation and water doors.

As an Artisan – Diesel Mechanic, you will be responsible for maintain and repair machinery and diesel-powered vehicles, engines and mechanical systems according to sound engineering practice and equipment specifications.

Your Responsibilities Will Include But Not Limited To

  • Build and assemble machines or mechanical components according to requirement
  • Inspect machines, engines, transmissions and run diagnostic tests to discover functionality issues

  • Be legally appointed in terms of Section 12.1 of the Mine Health and Safety Act – Occupational Hygienist of the Mine.
  • Identify, develop and implement risk-based Occupational hygiene programmes and schedules as prescribed within relevant guidelines.
  • Interprets group strategies, guidelines and standards and develop operational strategies, systems, policies and procedures
  • Coordinate the implementation of the occupational hygiene policies, strategies, code of practice to ensure compliance with legal and other requirements, effective service delivery to business, clients and sustainability of occupational hygiene initiatives.
  • Provide subject matter expertise, support and best practice support and guidance on occupational hygiene management to the mine.

  • Evaluates, analyse, recommend and implement appropriate control measures to mitigate known and emerging occupational hygiene risks

Job Description

  • Focus on compliance to standards and best practice in health, safety, environmental. Supports a culture toward zero harm.
  • Provides technical advice, support and oversight for operational excellence.
  • Applies specialist knowledge to recommend, implement, operate and maintain appropriate technical systems.
  • Analyse drill and blast data to highlight opportunities, gain stakeholder support, develop relevant business cases and facilitate the implementation of blast improvement initiatives. (Managerial authority for development of best practice on site, service authority with explosives and accessories providers, auditing authority with operations and explosives providers for best practice achievements on site).
  • Practice leader, influencing technology and innovation to develop cutting edge capabilities in drill & blast practice in the operation.
  • Liaise and consult on best practice, optimisation and appropriate technology development. (Advisory authority with department, service authority with technical institutions, manufacturers & suppliers, monitoring authority with the Operation on best practice implementation.
  • Ensure an effective operation of the drilling and blasting process to agreed business plan by the mining contractor (and supported by owners' team)
  • Liaise and co-ordinate between the site contractor's management teams, the project and site teams to ensure effective engagement, planning and execution of work.
  • Actively manages and contributes to improvement initiatives in the underground mine to establish best practice mechanised mining performance.
  • Co-ordinates meetings and management routines between the Owner and Mining Contractor (and other contractors as required) to ensure effective Short Interval control processes are applied to support a high performance and compliance, high reliability work culture within the mine contractor and owners mining team.
  • Effective engagement and management of interfaces and relationship with Owner team underground Mining Technical support functions –Geotechnical, Mine Planning, Survey and operational Geology to support efficient mechanised mining performance.
  • Monitor contractor risk and safety management performance, ensuring critical risks and hazards continuously identified and controlled. Compliance to risk management standards.

This role is a GBF6 and will be reporting to the Senior Technical Services Manager
Qualifications
Formal qualifications:

  • A Bachelors/ BTech / Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant mining engineering discipline.
  • Mine Managers Certificate of Competency Essential
  • Blasting Certificate for underground Mines Essential

Additional Requirements

  • Code B (08) Driver's License
  • Successfully obtained a Red Ticket (Medical Fitness certificate) on mine

Role-specific Knowledge

  • 8-10 years' experience in an underground mining environment with 3 years in a managerial position in drill and blast field.
  • Knowledge and understanding of SA Mining laws, regulations, codes and guidelines.
  • Leadership and practical experience in Underground mechanised Mining Management of modern, mechanised mines in both project development and steady state operation.
  • Experience in mid-large scale SLC, Caving or Open Stoping mines preferred.
  • Working knowledge or experience in emulsion manufacturing.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of blast designs software (Aegis and Isure) and processes
  • Front line management experience in underground mechanised lateral development mining in medium-large scale operations.
  • Knowledge of Project Management concepts, including Cost Control/ Engineering, Project Integration, Project Commercial Management, Project Risk Management and Document & Data Management.
  • Knowledge and experience with business improvement processes
  • Effective communication, conflict resolution, contingency planning and problem solving (root-cause-analysis) skills
  • Ability to constructively challenge mine contractor performance and introduce modern practices and operating methodologies/standards.
  • Knowledge of New Technology identification and implementation
