Purpose of the Role Fabricate, assemble, and weld steel components for water reservoirs and related structures to company quality standards, meeting production targets, drawings, and safety requirements both in the workshop and on customer sites. Key Responsibilities Interpret GA drawings/ISOs and job cards; confirm material lists and dimensions before cutting and fitup. Perform welding using SMAW (stick), GMAW/MIGMAG, and FCAW on mild steel, galvanized steel, and stainless where required. Prepare joints (bevels, root gaps), set up jigs, tack, and complete full penetration/fillet welds to procedure. Carry out cutting, grinding, drilling, and shaping using oxyfuel, plasma, and power tools; maintain tight tolerances. Assemble, square, and clamp structures (rings, panels, frames, brackets) ensuring correct alignment and distortion control. Conduct visual inspections and basic NDT (dimensions, fillet gauges); repair defects to pass QC before galvanizing/painting. Complete job cards and time entries accurately in line with Odoo/work orders; support traceability of heat numbers and consumables. Load, secure, and offload materials safely; support dispatch, site setup, and erection teams as needed. Maintain housekeeping (5S) and equipment (welders, leads, grinders); report faults and perform basic maintenance checks. Comply with OHS Act, risk assessments, lockout/tagout, and use required PPE at all times; participate in toolbox talks. Assist with creating safety files when required and adhere to sitespecific rules and permits. Meet daily/weekly production targets and quality KPIs as allocated by the Production/Project Manager. Minimum Requirements Qualified Welder: Trade Test (Red Seal) or equivalent NQF level; coding to AWS D1.1 / ASME IX / SANS 347 advantageous. 3 years proven experience in structural steel fabrication and welding. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and welding symbols. Demonstrated proficiency in SMAW and GMAW/MIGMAG; FCAW/TIG exposure beneficial. Competent with grinders, magnetic drills, band saws, oxyfuel/plasma cutting, and measuring tools. Medically fit for workshop and site work; able to work at heights and in confined/remote locations when required. Valid drivers licence and reliable transport advantageous.
