The Virtualization Engineer (L2) is responsible for providing a managed service to clients to ensure that their IT infrastructure and systems remain operational. Through the proactive monitoring, identifying, investigating, and resolving of technical incidents and problems, the Virtualization Engineer (L2) can restore service to clients. Their primary objective is to proactively review client requests or tickets and apply technical/process knowledge to resolve them without breaching service level agreement (SLA). This role focuses on second-line support for incidents and requests with a medium level of complexity. This role focusses across two or more technology domains - Virtualization and Storage / Cloud

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

·Proactively monitors the work queues

·Performs operational tasks to resolve all incidents/requests in a timely manner and within the agreed SLA

·Updates tickets with resolution tasks performed

·Identifies, investigates, analyses issues and errors prior to or when they occur, and logs all such incidents in a timely manner

·Captures all required and relevant information for immediate resolution

·Provides second level support to all incidents, requests and identifies the root cause of incidents and problems

·Communicates with other teams and clients for extending support

·Executes changes with clear identification of risks and mitigation plans to be captured into the change record

·Escalates all tickets to seek the right focus from CoE and other teams, if needed continue the escalations to management

·Works with automation teams for effort optimization and automating routine tasks

·Ability to work across various other resolver group (internal and external) like Service Provider, TAC, etc

·Identifies problems and errors before they impact a client’s service

·Ensures all changes are carried out with proper change approvals

·Plans and executes approved maintenance activities

·Audits and analyses incident and request tickets for quality and recommends improvements with updates to knowledge articles

·Produces trend analysis reports for identifying tasks for automation, leading to a reduction in tickets and optimization of effort

·May also contribute to / support on project work as and when required

·May work on implementing and delivering Disaster Recovery functions and tests


Academic Qualifications and Certifications:

·Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in IT/Computing (or demonstrated equivalent work experience)

About the role

We’re looking for a Mid Level Cloud Engineer to help design, implement, and support cloud infrastructure that is secure, scalable, and reliable. You should have hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and a solid foundation in Infrastructure as Code (IaC), cloud security, and operations. Specific Responsibilities

Infrastructure as Code (IaC):

Core Technical Skills:

The opportunity

We are looking for a highly skilled and driven Cloud Operations Engineer to join our team with a strong emphasis on communications technologies, cloud operations, and system performance. This role requires expertise in monitoring, alerting, anomaly detection, automation, security, and performance tuning across our critical communications platforms. You will be responsible for the reliability, availability, and performance of services such as SIP, Skype for Business, and Azure Communication Services (ACS). Your role will also focus on optimizing resource utilization, cost management, and ensuring disaster recovery and business continuity (BCP/DR).

What you’ll be doing

  • Develop and maintain real-time monitoring and alerting systems using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and the ELK stack to ensure system health and performance.
  • Identify and resolve anomalies and bottlenecks proactively, reducing downtime through automated detection and alert mechanisms.
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning, scaling, and patching using tools like Terraform and Azure DevOps across Kubernetes, Windows, and Linux environments.
  • Build self-healing systems and leverage Kubernetes operators, CI/CD pipelines, and event-driven automation to improve reliability.
  • Analyze and optimize system performance for latency-sensitive services, including VoIP, video, and messaging.
  • Implement cloud cost optimization strategies, such as using Reserved Instances, rightsizing virtual machines, and leveraging Azure Cost Management tools.
  • Strengthen system security by enforcing best practices for hardening, vulnerability patching, and incident management in collaboration with security teams.
  • Design and execute robust disaster recovery plans, ensuring fault-tolerant architectures and reliable backup and restore strategies.

You’ll need to bring:

  • 5+ years of experience as a Cloud Operations Engineer, Systems Engineer, or in a similar role with a focus on communications technologies.
  • Proven experience with cloud platforms, with a strong focus on Azure and experience with Azure Resource Patching for Kubernetes (AKS), VMs (Windows and Linux).
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams/Skype for Business and Azure Communication Services.
  • Strong understanding of SIP, VoIP, and related protocols.
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts and experience with Cisco networking technologies (e.g., routers switches, firewalls).
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Bash, Terraform, Helm, Pulumi) and automation tools.
  • Experience with network performance monitoring tools (e.g., Wireshark, tcdump) is a plus.

Currently, this role is remote. However, we are also planning to open an office in Johannesburg and we'll expect you to come to our office twice a week.

As this position involves supporting regions such as Europe and the US, we require flexibility in working shifts to cover these time zones. Occasional weekend work will be expected. Rest assured, you will be compensated for any irregular hours worked.

About the role

We’re looking for a Mid Level Cloud Engineer to help design, implement, and support cloud infrastructure that is secure, scalable, and reliable. You should have hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and a solid foundation in Infrastructure as Code (IaC), cloud security, and operations. This role offers a chance to deepen your cloud expertise while contributing to real-world projects and collaborating with experienced engineers.

Specific Responsibilities

Infrastructure as Code (IaC):

  • Write and manage infrastructure using Terraform (and optionally Terragrunt) with a focus on reusable and modular code.
  • Use version control and follow best practices for infrastructure deployments.
  • Deploy and manage cloud resources following high availability and security best practices.
  • Support multi-environment setups (e.g. dev, staging, prod) and basic disaster recovery configurations.

Security & Compliance:

  • Apply basic cloud security concepts such as IAM policies, least-privilege principles, and encryption.
  • Follow team-defined standards aligned with compliance frameworks like CIS Benchmarks and ISO 27001.

Monitoring & Operations:

  • Set up basic monitoring, logging, and alerting using tools like CloudWatch, Prometheus, or similar.
  • Assist with system health checks, performance tuning, and cost optimisation under guidance.
  • Work with application and DevOps teams to integrate infrastructure with deployment pipelines.
  • Help manage and resolve cloud-related support tickets and incidents within agreed timelines.

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing:

  • Contribute to runbooks, internal wikis, and documentation to improve supportability and onboarding.
  • Participate in retrospectives and post-incident reviews to improve operations and reduce risk.
Requirements

Core Technical Skills:

  • Hands-on experience with Terraform (or similar IaC tools).
  • Working knowledge of one major cloud platform.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins.

Foundational Cloud Knowledge:

  • Understanding of key cloud services (e.g. VPCs, VMs, IAM, Blob storage, etc.)
  • Comfortable with networking basics, security groups, and role-based access control.
  • Basic knowledge of cloud architecture principles like scalability, high availability, and fault tolerance.
  • Exposure to cost tagging, resource naming conventions, and resource lifecycle management.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with multi-cloud setups.
  • Awareness of ITIL/SRE principles or ticketing tools like Jira or ServiceNow.
  • Basic scripting (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation and tooling.
