Handle SME funding applications and EFT applications.

Company in Gauteng looking for an experienced Heavy Commercial Vehicle Underwriter to underwrite Transportation policies.

Duties & Responsibilities

Requirements:

  • 5 – 7 years experience with Heavy Commercial Vehicle underwriting
  • Experience in working with HCV & GIT related products
  • Proven track record of underwriting experience e.g. assessing exposure and underwriting levels
  • Very good communication skills (both written & verbal)
  • NQF Level 4: Short-Term Commercial Lines 60 Credits
  • Successfully completed the RE 5 Examination Level 1

Responsibilities:

  • Underwriting of new and renewal business on Heavy Commercial Vehicle and Goods in Transit risks
  • Ensuring that risks are written within the company’s risk appetite and complies within the reinsurance treaties and internal mandates
  • Monitoring and taking corrective action on badly performing risks
  • Maintain an acceptable loss ratio
  • Maintain policy wording drafts and ensure that the product remains competitive with market offering
  • Dealing with day to day queries and amendments to existing policies
  • Providing brokers with advice
  • Maintaining and building good customer relationships with brokers
  • Conducting product training to brokers
  • Provide input into building and designing various aspects of the products on a designated system
  • Provide comparisons between the competitors’ products

  • Evaluate credit applications (through determining affordability, ability to repay, creditworthiness, and fraud risk) to approve or decline credit applications up to £25K.
  • Accurately work customer screening alerts, identify target matches, clear false positives, and fully investigate fraudulent activity by analysing all available information including bureau data, contact details, bank account information, and identity documents to reach a lending decision.
  • Follow existing fraud and credit policies/processes, actively seek out current vulnerabilities, and identify new ways of detecting and mitigating fraud in our systems.
  • Manage end-to-end investigations of fraud claims, communicating with internal and external stakeholders via phone and email to reach final outcomes.

  • Ensure all risks to the company are mitigated, identified, and escalated where necessary.
  • Maintain a broad product knowledge to respond to customer queries effectively and accurately.
  • Stay abreast on industry regulations, trends and best practices in underwriting.
  • Approve and countersign cases above the acceptance limits of the underwriter.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to junior staff in the team to ensure optimal performance of the team and knowledge sharing.
  • Actively anticipate and identify opportunities for improvements to our processes and procedures.
  • Proactively solve problems, and recognize risk exposures, manage and escalate these where appropriate.
  • Assess all applications not accepted by the online underwriting engine – initial applications, additional information and policy alterations.
  • Provide fair and balanced underwriting decisions using the appropriate amount of evidence necessary.
  • You will be an ideal candidate if you have :

  • Grade 12- NQF Level 4
  • Relevant undergraduate degree
  • Fit and Proper requirements for long term Insurance
  • 5 Plus years of proven experience as an Underwriter in the life insurance industry
  • A proven working or higher- level knowledge of lump sum disability and critical illness, incomes protection, business cover and group risk
  • Knowledge of insurance products, regulations and underwriting guidelines and current practices
  • Experience in working with underwriting systems and tools
  • Be competent in interpretation of doctor’s reports, medical results and risks link to abnormalities of these
