Santam Casualty has a position available for a Financial Lines Underwriter who will be based in Corlett Drive, Illovo .
What will make you successful in this role?To provide specialist underwriting knowledge in respect of the Financial Lines portfolio (which incorporates Directors and Officers, Crime and Civil Liability classes, including Commercial Crime, Trustees and Private Equity Management Liability insurance).
The key activities of a Financial Lines Underwriter are:
- Examine insurance proposal for new and renewal business, gathering and assessing background and supporting information and providing views and analysis on the risk/account.
- Attending to conducting necessary research, evaluating and assessing the risk (including but not limited to coverage analysis, pricing and structure) and discussing/negotiating risks with the broker in order to effectively win or renew the risk.
- Evaluate possible risk and determine appropriate insurance premiums using underwriting tools and practices, underwriting information and own judgement and experience.
- Quote within designated authority levels and refer the account where necessary in accordance with company policy and technical guidelines.
- Monitor portfolio performance and ensure that renewals, new business, lost business and cancellative reserve are tracked and actioned.
- Set accurate, realistic premium forecasts and draft financial reporting as required in a timely manner to enable management to set budgets and monitor performance targets for your own portfolio of accounts and as a contribution to the team portfolio.
- Be able to confidently articulate technical messaging and deliver training, as and when necessary, internally as well as to brokers and clients.
- Accurately enter data into company systems/portals and produce management reports that ensure that the company remains aware of the nature and financial impact of all risks written for your own portfolio, including (topline/bottom line), claim trends and other underwriting reporting metrics
- Essential to proficiently understand and apply policy wording to core underwriting concepts in order to assess risk accurately, structure coverage and ensure alignment with risk appetite.
- Maintain accurate electronic records for auditing and regulatory purposes.
- Proactively participate in projects or other initiatives designed to improve the effectiveness or efficiency of the department.
- Undertake any other reasonable tasks as requested by the Head or Manager in order that the team achieve its objectives.
- Adhere to and where possible, improve, all operational and procedural standards.
- Handle accounts queries and credit control queries to the satisfaction of all parties.
- Tertiary qualification a preference (LLB, B.Comm in Insurance, Finance, Accounting or Economics)
- NQF 7 insurance or risk management qualification.
- Admitted Attorney (essential requirement)
- Minimum of 3 years technical underwriting experience in the relevant line of business as an underwriter or Minimum of 7 years’ insurance industry experience of which a minimum of 3 years spent in a technical underwriting department.
- FAIS Compliance
- Competent user of Excel, Word, Outlook and other Microsoft platforms.
- Good understanding of insurance industry including the reinsurance market and the terminologies used.
- Critical thinking and analysis of complex risk
- Good technical understanding of policy wordings
- Able to evaluate information from a variety of sources and solve problems

The salary range on offer is between R600k - R900k p/a.
Functions:- Analysis and understanding of technical documentation received and insurance terms and conditions
- Assessing the characteristics of the risk, in order to determine its consistency with the company's underwriting principles and applicable insurance terms and conditions
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and internal stakeholders
- Pro-actively liaise with relevant stakeholders when new business is underwritten
- The ideal candidate must possess either an engineering background with experience in engineering underwriting, or have extensive experience specifically in engineering underwriting.

Requirements:
- 5 – 7 years experience with Heavy Commercial Vehicle underwriting
- Experience in working with HCV & GIT related products
- Proven track record of underwriting experience e.g. assessing exposure and underwriting levels
- Very good communication skills (both written & verbal)
- NQF Level 4: Short-Term Commercial Lines 60 Credits
- Successfully completed the RE 5 Examination Level 1
Responsibilities:
- Underwriting of new and renewal business on Heavy Commercial Vehicle and Goods in Transit risks
- Ensuring that risks are written within the company’s risk appetite and complies within the reinsurance treaties and internal mandates
- Monitoring and taking corrective action on badly performing risks
- Maintain an acceptable loss ratio
- Maintain policy wording drafts and ensure that the product remains competitive with market offering
- Dealing with day to day queries and amendments to existing policies
- Providing brokers with advice
- Maintaining and building good customer relationships with brokers
- Conducting product training to brokers
- Provide input into building and designing various aspects of the products on a designated system
- Provide comparisons between the competitors’ products
