Critical OutputsEffective clinical leadership
- Lead the implementation of the nursing care plan and co-ordinate and facilitate the delivery of the correct treatment plan within the correct MDT program in order to achieve clinical outcomes.
- Function as a clinical expert in achieving patient outcomes.
- Ensure competence of staff and students, determine and drive criteria for effective professional socialization, create an environment conducive to learning and provide feedback to relevant stakeholders.
- Promote customer satisfaction within unit, address customer complaints, conduct quality care rounds and clinical practice audits to monitor care levels and report accordingly.
- Implement national quality initiatives within unit with the focus on improved clinical outcomes and report accordingly. Identify clinical and safety risks and trends in all of the above, implement corrective action where necessary and monitor on an ongoing basis.
- Initiate and drive unit specific best operating practice, communicate these for wider implementation and participate in hospital specific marketing initiatives.
Effective leadership and people management
- Demonstrate visible leadership in respect of LHC values, operating model, Nursing strategy and image of the profession, actively sponsor LHC initiatives and projects to ensure continued and improved productivity. Drive and manage all people related processes within unit.
Effective financial management (including equipment)
- Participate in business planning and budgeting processes and manage nursing costs according to budget. Manage stock utilization and Cost of sales and drive product management processes within unit together with relevant stakeholders.
- Ensure all staff are trained on the operation of equipment within the unit and together with relevant stakeholders ensure equipment is in working order to provide a safe patient environment.
Effective relationships with internal & external stakeholders
- Build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders (i.e. HOD’s, Enabling functions, patients, family members, service providers etc.) through ongoing communication and feedback.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with doctors by agreeing professional code of conduct, driving and monitoring effective communication regarding positive patient outcomes, functioning as an advocate for LHC and communicate impact of industry challenges on the Nursing profession.
- Degree/Diploma in Nursing with approximately 5 years post basic and proven leadership and/or people management experience within healthcare (including clinical competence in area of specialization)
- Diploma in Operating Theatre Nursing Science is essential
- A post graduate qualification in Management and Nursing Education would prove advantageous.
- At least 5 years’ experience as a qual ified theatre registered nurse
- Current registration with South African Nursing Council
- Basic understanding of labour legislation, financial and change management principles.

Ensure that all theatre preparation pre-and post-operative is conducted timeously.
Patient Advocacy, Customer / Doctor Relationships;
Build mutually beneficial relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
Drive a positive patient (customer) experience by putting patients first and deliver holistic customer oriented service.
Collaborate with Unit Managers in identifying and implementing actions to improve service quality and problem resolution.
Report, investigate and discuss all negative and positive comments regarding the unit and act on findings, where necessary.
Establish a harmonious and compassionate environment that promotes the patients' mental and physical health and provide the required support to family and friends.
Maintain cooperative relationships among healthcare teams e.g.
multidisciplinary team to improve patient care standards, information communication and participating in team problem solving.
Keep patients informed about the Group's complaints procedure and "The Voice" patient experience platform and guide patients in terms of how the survey can be completed.
Finance :
Utilize supplies and equipment in an economical manner reducing wastage whilst maintaining overall control.
Utilize and maintain sufficient inventory levels (i.e.
stock levels) to accomplish job and results whilst ensuring minimal wastage.
Ensure correct usage, cleaning and storage of equipment and report equipment that requires repair and maintenance.
Drive a culture of efficiency amongst team members by consistently reinforcing opportunities to prevent wastage and reduce costs.
Support the Nursing Services Manager and Unit Managers in controlling budget expenditure, by ensuring nursing resource spend is in line with budget, patient care and actual activities.
Staffing, HR Policy and Procedure :
Be an ambassador for quality patient care by living the company values and upholding the company image.
Take responsibility for CPD to enhance professional and technical knowledge and skills e.g.
through attendance of educational workshops, rotating to other units to gain broader exposure, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, participating in professional societies and the like.
Ensure performance contracting process is completed timeously and that outputs are delivered according to performance standards.
Promote the Group's brand and market nursing services by responding timeously to patient needs, projecting a professional image by adhering to the dress code, resolving patient problems and providing personal patient care.
