The Nutrition Services Assistant I supports the Nutrition Services program by assisting in the preparation, service, and sales of meals to students in a sanitary, efficient, and customer-friendly manner.

Nature & Scope

The Nutrition Services Assistant I works independently following standardized routines under the direction of the Nutrition Services Lead. The role requires strict adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations. The incumbent interfaces with students, school administrative staff, nutrition services colleagues, teachers, and non-licensed school staff. Because there is frequent interaction with students and parents, the position requires professional decorum, calm demeanor, and the ability to act as a role model. The position does not have supervisory responsibilities but may provide guidance to regular, temporary, or substitute employees as required.

Essential Job Functions
  • Conduct oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District’s mission.
  • Prepare and serve appropriate quantities of food in a timely manner, assuring quality and quantity.
  • Prepare and assemble hot and cold entrées, fruits, vegetables, and other foods.
  • Follow written menus, production records, and production standards.
  • Follow recipes for consistent quality and cost-effectiveness. Provide feedback to Leads regarding recipes.
  • Prepare food service facilities for serving of food.
  • Minimize waste.
  • Operate standard kitchen equipment and follow proper procedures.
  • Ensure serving lines are stocked with adequate food, beverages, and supplies.
  • Serve food from steam tables or cold counters.
  • Follow HACCP SOPs for food safety and sanitation in receiving, storage, preparation, service, leftovers, cleaning, and equipment upkeep.
  • Count money for the till and prepare money boxes; use NS software for meal accounting and sales data; reconcile cash with Lead.
  • Complete and maintain daily and weekly records of meals, beverages served, and leftovers; maintain meal production accounting records.
  • Washes and cleans cafeteria tables and equipment; lifts moderately heavy objects.
  • Provide inventory and usage information to Lead; assist with monthly physical inventory.
  • Assist other personnel and participate in training of new employees, volunteers, and student helpers.
  • Monitor equipment operation and report concerns as required.
  • Participate in required hours of annual continuing education, per federal law.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with district staff and community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Comply with all district policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Criminal background check.
  • Required physical examination.
  • English literacy (read, write, speak).
  • Ability to follow multi-step written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Basic math skills for routine calculations.
  • Valid Food Handlers Card.

Working Conditions

Primarily in an industrial school kitchen and cafeteria. Environment may be loud with exposure to hot surfaces, steam, cold temperatures in coolers/freezers, cleaning solvents, and machinery. Potential hazards include chemicals, fumes, communicable diseases, sharp objects, equipment, pinch points, and slippery surfaces.

The role requires constant standing/walking (up to 2-3 miles per day) and moderate to fast-paced movement to meet timelines.

Physical Demands (Must)
  • Lifting/carrying: up to 50 lbs occasionally; frequent handling up to 20 lbs; carry up to 15 feet.
  • Pushing/Pulling: up to 75 lbs intermittently.
