Tax Advisor

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Chartered Accountant (SA) or BCom (Accounting), with 1-3 years post articles experience within a tax practice
  • Corporate, compliance and tax dispute resolution experience
  • Multi-disciplinary tax experience, international tax experience and deferred tax experience would be an advantage
  • High academic achiever, with proven numeracy and language skills

Job Description

AIIM is seeking a Senior Tax Advisor to work within African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), a member of Old Mutual Alternative Investments (OMAI) with a reporting line to the AIIM COO and dotted reporting lines into OMAI CFO and Fund Investment Directors.

The resource will be dedicated to AIIM, providing tax input into various parts of the AIIM business, namely the Pan Africa, SADC and ATAF Investment teams and assisting with other corporate tax matters pertaining to the AIIM business and its various funds under management.

AIIM has 5 offices, South Africa (Cape Town & Johannesburg), Nigeria (Lagos), Cote d’Ivoire (Abidjan) and Kenya (Nairobi) and several affiliate entities are domiciled in Mauritius. The candidate will be required to travel occasionally to the AIIM regional offices and investee company jurisdictions, to build relationships with various stakeholders including the regional AIIM team members, management teams, external local tax advisors/firms and tax authorities.

The role will include the following:

  • management of tax risk from both a fund and fund manager’s perspective;
  • oversight and input into tax risks for investment and divestment transactions;
  • providing strategic input to transactions, asset management and strategic initiative teams and well as investee company management teams;
  • scoping, procurement and management of external tax advice;
  • tax sign off and advice on legal documentation in respect of equity transactions and the transaction compliance certificate;
  • advising on staff carried interest and co-investment schemes and management incentive plans for investee companies;
  • advising on location of domicile for new funds and manager entities;
  • interaction with Old Mutual Group Tax team and advisors in respect of transfer pricing, monitoring, reporting and adhoc queries;
  • responsible for tax compliance, including FATCA/CRS compliance, across the various taxpaying legal entities;
  • Providing Ad hoc tax advice to portfolio companies;
  • general corporate/ commercial advice.

The role also requires the candidate to appreciate the tax opportunities and challenges that exist, across the various assets under management, including the context of the wider international tax framework and BEPS.

Candidates with a strong history of not just providing or procuring tax advice but rather assisting with the commercial impacts of such advice into a Sale and Purchase Agreement, or Transaction documentation, will have an advantage.

The job function requires a strong skill set in SA domestic tax and international tax.

Key Result Areas Transactions
  • Provides guidance and input to investment professionals on optimal deal structures
  • Manages the tax risks and points of tax friction over each asset’s holding period, incorporating both the domestic law in which that asset is situated and within the wider international tax framework.
  • Responsible for selection and appointment of tax advisors for tax due diligence workstream for investment and exit opportunities
  • Manages tax due diligence and tax advisory work streams, including external advisors and investment team
  • Responsible for sign off of tax section within the Transaction Compliance Certificate
  • Manages tax risk and compliance within jurisdictions, both on incorporation and ongoing management
Fund Structures
  • Review and sign off on tax matters relating to the establishment and structuring of new fund structures and on winding up fund structures
  • Co-ordinate with external legal counsel on fund structuring tax matters
  • Liaise with fund investors regarding tax status, withholding tax and investor tax reports and adhoc reporting matters
Old Mutual Group Tax
  • Regular meetings with Old Mutual Group Tax team regarding transaction deal pipeline
  • Update on due diligence work streams
  • Operate in accordance with the agreed AIIM/Old Mutual Group tax framework document
Corporate Tax
  • Oversight of annual corporate tax returns for all AIIM entities
  • Oversight of VAT return process
  • Public Officer for AIIM and AIIM managed fund entities
  • Review and sign-off on transfer pricing documents for AIIM entities
Qualifications and Experience required
  • CA / LLB / equivalent with postgrad qualification (i.e. HDip honours / Masters).
  • At least 10 years’ experience, including Africa and international tax experience.

•Leading client engagements with HNW and UHNW individuals, families, family offices, and corporates.
•Drafting and reviewing complex exchange control applications and liaising with SARB (via Authorised Dealers).
•Liaising with the Technical Committee and contributing to internal technical training, toolkits, articles and newsletters.
•Identifying structuring opportunities aligned with Investec's broader client strategy, including entrenching the client and relationship deepening.

Experience, skills and capability

•LLB, BAcc, BCom Law, Chartered Accountant or equivalent qualification.
•Postgraduate diploma in tax or international tax law is essential. CFP or STEP designation is advantageous.
•Minimum 7 years' experience in tax advisory with demonstrable exposure to international private client work.
•Proven ability to sign off complex tax advice and assume technical responsibility for structuring output.
•Strong working knowledge of SA tax, global tax frameworks, exchange control, and fiduciary instruments.
•Experience working with high-net-worth individuals, multi-jurisdictional families, and/or family office structures.
•Excellent drafting, research, and analytical skills.
•Client-focused, with the ability to balance precision with practical execution.
•Confident presenter and advisor, comfortable engaging with both clients and peers.

The team provides high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals, families, and business owners with bespoke, intergenerational tax and estate planning solutions — both domestically and cross border.

The scope of work includes tax-efficient structuring, exchange control planning, global estate and succession strategies, and fiduciary advice. The team is a technical centre of excellence, known for simplifying complexity and delivering solutions that align with the personal, professional, and commercial interests of our clients.

The team works closely with Investec Private Bankers, Wealth Managers, and internal partners across the business as part of a private client strategy and the team is also well-connected to a network of top-tier external legal, tax, and fiduciary professionals.

Key responsibilities

As a Cross-Border Tax & Fiduciary Advisor, you will work under the guidance of senior advisors, supporting the delivery of high-quality tax, estate, and fiduciary solutions to Investec's high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients. This is a development-focused role, offering meaningful exposure to complex, cross-border matters and the opportunity to grow into a full advisory capacity over time.

Your responsibilities will include:
• Assisting senior advisors in preparing client-facing proposals, reports, and structuring memorandums.
• Conducting technical research on South African and international tax laws, exchange control regulations, and fiduciary planning structures.
• Supporting the drafting and review of estate planning documents including wills, trust deeds, loan agreements, and related legal instruments.
• Preparing first-draft exchange control applications and assisting with submissions.
• Coordinating implementation tasks under the supervision of senior team members, including facilitation with external advisors.
• Attending client meetings, capturing meeting notes, and managing follow-up actions.
• Liaising with internal support areas and Investec product houses (e.g., Private Bank, Life, Wealth, Exchange Control) to facilitate client deliverables.
• Tracking legislative and regulatory updates and contributing summaries for internal knowledge sharing.
• Assisting in the drafting of internal newsletters, thought pieces, or technical content under guidance.
• Helping maintain internal technical toolkits and client file systems.
• Providing logistical and technical support for internal training sessions and presentations.
• Building relationships with internal stakeholders to support client delivery and collaboration.

This is a development-focused role, offering meaningful exposure to complex cross-border matters, with a clear pathway to growing into a full advisory capacity:
• Identify structuring opportunities that support client acquisition, retention, and cross-sell strategies.
• Understand and apply current tax and trust legislation, both domestic and offshore.
• Build confidence in navigating global tax trends and their relevance to private clients.

Experience, skills and capability

• Bachelor's degree (LLB, BCom Law, BCom Accounting or equivalent) with tax-related subjects.
• Postgraduate diploma in tax or CFP designation is an advantage (not mandatory).
• 0–5 years of relevant experience in tax, legal, accounting, or fiduciary environments (including articles or internships).
• Accounting graduates or junior CAs(SA) with an interest in private client advisory are welcome to apply.
• Law graduates or admitted attorneys with an interest in tax, estate planning, and structuring are equally encouraged to apply.
• Proactive and intellectually curious, with a strong willingness to learn and grow into a full advisory role.
• Sound legal and/or tax research and analytical skills.
• Clear, concise writing and drafting ability.
• Excellent time management; comfortable managing multiple deadlines under pressure.
• Collaborative, solutions-oriented team player with high attention to detail.
