Position Summary:

The CPA Tax Manager is a key leadership position within the firm, responsible for managing and reviewing complex tax engagements for individuals, partnerships, corporations, and trusts. This role involves client relationship management, tax compliance and planning, staff supervision, and ensuring work is performed in accordance with professional standards and firm policies. The Tax Manager serves as a mentor and technical resource for junior staff and plays a vital role in identifying tax-saving strategies and risk mitigation opportunities for clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and review the preparation of federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and fiduciaries.

  • Provide strategic tax planning and consulting services to clients in various industries.

  • Conduct tax research and stay informed on current tax legislation to ensure compliance and maximize client benefits.

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop tax staff and senior associates; provide regular performance feedback and coaching.

  • Manage multiple engagements and ensure client deadlines and budgets are met.

  • Communicate effectively with clients, partners, and team members on technical matters and engagement progress.

  • Identify and assist in the implementation of process improvements for tax workflow and client service delivery.

  • Assist with business development efforts and participate in client proposal processes.

Qualifications:

  • CPA license required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field; Master’s in Taxation .

  • 5+ years of progressive tax experience in public accounting, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role.

  • Strong technical knowledge of tax laws and regulations, including multi-state and federal taxation.

  • Proficiency in tax preparation and research software (e.g., CCH Axcess, ProSystem fx, GoSystem, BNA, or similar).

  • Excellent organizational, project management, and communication skills.

  • Ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team in a fast-paced environment.

POSITION INFO:

Job Purpose

To provide tax advice and tax compliance services to a wide range of clients who operate in all sectors. To continually assist and ensure that the Clients receive excellent tax compliance service and thus build and maintain relationships that support the PKF Octagon culture and values. Quality, accuracy and Client service is of paramount importance and is a specific requirement of this position.

Main Responsibilities And Accountabilities

The successful applicant will be required to handle (but is not limited to) the following:

  • Prepare Objections for submission to SARS and submit to SARS as required by the Client and Partners. To liaise directly with the relevant Partner before the submission is made to SARS.
  • Attend to Objections from start to finish ensuring quality of service and accuracy of output and acting in the best interests of the Client.
  • Ensure ongoing follow up and tracking with SARS on all tax related matters, including the objections and submission, on behalf of the Client.
  • Take the IT registrations, Tax Clearance, Tax Applications and Objections to SARS and ensure they are properly received.
  • To accurately process and log all information on GreatSoft.
  • Perform the role of a Client liaison on all tax related matters, ensuring the Client relationship is maintained and excellent services provided.
  • Provide continuous and accurate feedback to the relevant Client and Partners.
  • Attend to the accurate completion of all tax returns.
  • Provide feedback to Partners on the progress of tax returns that you are working on for them.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Must have at least 5 years of experience in a Tax Compliance role at an Audit and Accounting firm.
  • Matric and completed a relevant tax related degree or diploma
  • Must know the latest industry and tax rules and legislation.
  • Must be computer literate, must know specifically GreatSoft and SARS e-filing.

Requirements

Deal with queries from SARS relating to Income Tax returns completed, at the discretion of the relevant director.

Monitor the submission of returns for the relevant director(s) ensuring that returns which can be submitted are submitted timeouosly

Application to SARS for registration of clients on eFiling, where required

Drafting of statements of assets and liabilities, capital reconciliations and tax computations

Calculating third and additional top-up payments when required

Ensuring finalisation of all verifications or audits

Follow-up on all payments and refunds due by/to designated clients on a list

Ensure all payments and refund letters are sent to clients timeously via GreatSoft

Checking Assessments against original and correct tax calculations to identify differences

Informing the Tax Manager of any differences for possible objections

Additional assessments to be identified and communicated to Tax Manager to request reasons and possibly object

Controlling general administration of key duties and responsibilities and ensuring all required functions are adhered to with relation to eFiling, GreatSoft and eDocs.

Performing any other tasks, which may be reasonably expected

Requesting SARS to remit various penalties for various entities and tax types.

Application for various tax directives.

Compliance with the firm’s System of Quality Management (SOQM), policies and procedures.

Compliance with the firm’s Employee Code of Conduct which consists of the firm’s HR policies, SAICA, IRBA and IESBA Codes of Conduct.
