Introduction
We are urgently seeking a diligent and proactive Environmental Officer for a temporary position on a civil construction project. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the project's compliance with all relevant environmental legislation, client requirements, and the company's environmental standards. This role is critical in managing the project's environmental impact, implementing the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP), and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility on site.
Location: South Africa (Project-based in Standerton, Mpumalanga)
Duties & Responsibilities Key Responsibilities- CEMP Implementation: Assist in and oversee the direct implementation of the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP). Ensure that all personnel and contractors on site understand and adhere to the CEMP requirements.
- Compliance and Monitoring: Conduct regular site inspections, monitoring, and audits to ensure compliance with the Environmental Management Programme (EMP), Environmental Authorisation (EA), and other applicable legal requirements.
- Reporting: Gather, analyze, and interpret environmental data for the site. Prepare and submit regular environmental compliance reports to project management and, where required, to the competent authority.
- Incident Management: Investigate, document, and report all environmental incidents. Ensure that corrective and preventative actions are implemented and closed out effectively.
- Risk Management: Partner with the construction and operational teams to identify potential environmental risks and develop mitigation strategies. This includes assisting in the development and maintenance of method statements for activities with high environmental impact.
- Training and Awareness: Prepare and conduct environmental awareness training, presentations, and inductions for all site personnel and contractors. Provide ongoing "on-the-job" environmental training.
- Stakeholder Liaison: Liaise with the project team, clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies on environmental matters. Attend site meetings to provide environmental input and assist in finding environmentally responsible solutions to challenges.
- Waste and Pollution Control: Implement and monitor waste management and pollution control measures on site, ensuring adherence to all disposal regulations.
- Documentation: Maintain all environmental documentation, including permits, licenses, audit reports, and incident logs, ensuring they are up-to-date and accessible.
- Pre- and Post-Construction Activities: Conduct pre-construction site assessments to document baseline conditions and produce a post-construction audit upon project completion to identify any outstanding environmental snags for rectification.
- Education: A National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of experience as an Environmental Officer, preferably within the civil construction industry.
- Legislative Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of South African environmental legislation and regulations (e.g., NEMA, NEM:WA) and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience in conducting site audits, inspections, and risk assessments.
- Strong technical report writing skills.
- Certifications (Advantageous):
- Registration as a Candidate Natural Scientist (Cand.Sci.Nat) with SACNASP.
- Training in SAMTRAC, SHEMTRAC, or similar safety, health, and environmental management courses.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001: Environmental Management Systems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
