OMAI is seeking a talented experienced sustainability specialist to provide environmental, social and governance (ESG) and impact input to support investment teams in AIIM.
Key Responsibilities- Support investment teams with ESG due diligence to determine if potential investments conform to OMAI ESG requirements including UNPRI, Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards, IFC EHS and Sector Guidelines, ILO and other relevant standards.
- Provide expertise across multiple sectors and asset classes to effectively manage ESG risks and drive the delivery of positive impacts.
- Review the sustainability aspects of projects and assist specialists with project implementation and contractual compliance in respect to the sustainability aspects of the different funds assets.
- Assist asset managers in monitoring and influencing the assets in the implementation of their sustainability obligations. This includes travelling to sites and engaging with management teams.
- Preparation of investor and sustainability reports and responses to ad-hoc investor / shareholder ESG related queries and client engagement.
- Sustainability data management and analysis to derive insights for internal and external clients from this data.
- Training investment teams in sustainability related issues.
- Ensure Fund compliance with ESG requirements.
- Represent OMAI in public forums on sustainability topics and in governance forums and committees.
- Provide thought leadership thinking and deliverables.
- Relevant qualifications in environmental and/or social sciences
- 10 years relevant experience
- French speaking
- Appropriate professional registration or certification
- Understanding and working knowledge of UNPRI, Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards, IFC EHS Guidelines, ILO, UN SDGs and other relevant sustainability standards and guidelines
- Experience in ESG including Environmental and Social Screening, ES Impact Assessments, ES Due Diligence, Risk Assessment and ES Management Systems (ESMS); experience with biodiversity, biophysical and socio-economic knowledge including climate change work from mitigation to adaptation
- Exposure to sustainability aspects associated with capital intensive infrastructure projects (oil and gas, thermal power, renewable energy, roads, ports, etc.)
- Experience in implementing and monitoring environmental and social management systems and plans within construction and operational businesses
- Ability to manage third party consultants
- Ability to critically review and integrate information

Maintain and improve integrated Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability (HSES) practices
Identify and evaluate climate-related risks and opportunities
Promote and implement circular economy principles across the value chain, including initiatives for waste minimisation, energy and water efficiency, responsible sourcing, and sustainable material use
Stay informed and advise on relevant regulations and ESG developments
Foster a practical culture of health, safety and environmental responsibility
Support operational leaders and teams to manage HSES responsibility
Assist with budgeting for health, safety, environment and sustainability
Coordinate internal and external engagement on sustainability progress
Community Development and Social Impact
Implement and maintain digital ESG platforms and data tools to streamline sustainability data collection, tracking, and reporting
Lead and manage people to achieve performance objectives
Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or related field
Registration with SACNASP (South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions) is recommended where applicable.
Additional certifications such as GRI Certified Training (for sustainability reporting) or relevant ESG training are advantageous
Criteria
Minimum 8–10 years of progressive experience in sustainability, environmental management, or SHEQ roles
Proven track record in:
ESG and sustainability reporting
Climate risk and opportunity assessment
Stakeholder engagement (internal and external)
Leading cross-functional ESG projects and embedding sustainability across operational functions
Exposure to international ESG trends, integrated reporting, and audit processes
In-depth knowledge of South African environmental, mining, and safety legislation (e.g., NEMA, MPRDA, MHSA, OHS Act)
Familiarity with ESG disclosure frameworks, sustainability indices, and investor expectations
Experience with digital sustainability data platforms (e.g., PowerBI or similar tools)
Strong understanding of circular economy, resource efficiency, and climate strategy principles
Ability to translate technical environmental and climate data into business-relevant insights
