Introduction

We are looking to recruit a Sustainability Manager to work within the Group Human Resources department of The Clicks Group. The role will be based at Clicks Head Office in Cape Town and will report to the Chief People Officer.

Duties & Responsibilities

Main purpose
To develop sustainability goals, objectives, initiatives and strategies; and
Ensure continuous monitoring and tracking of sustainability indicators, in order to report on investors ESG-related matters as well as provide technical support for sustainability programs or concerns.

Job objectives

  • To support the development of corporate sustainability strategies that reflect the environmental, social, and governance issues
  • To oversee the implementation of TCFD and carbon neutrality commitments and ESG reporting frameworks, which encompass the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and JSE sustainability and climate change guidelines
  • To facilitate the coordination of the Group Sustainability practices, aligned to the sustainability strategy. (This incorporates the ESG benchmarking against sustainability indexes.)
  • To periodically review and analyse sustainability performance and reporting provide the findings to be scrutinised/ evaluated by Exco
  • To support the production of an annual corporate sustainability report and ESG data book, including data collection, measurement and analysis, and content development.
  • To track and report on sustainable development goals key indicators
  • To provide guidance around the improvement of the implementation of sustainability reporting processes and set annual milestones in keeping with best practice principles
  • To manage the Exco forum sustainability inputs
  • To provide input into investor disclosures (CDP, S&P and FTSE Russell) in liaison with Group Legal and Finance (are they in keeping with JSE disclosure guidelines)
  • To respond to investor ESG concerns or issues
  • To provide inputs towards the Social and Ethics Committee- and the Board Reports on ESG matters.
  • To follow-up, track and monitor on the initiatives adopted by the Group in effecting the targeted ESG matrix
  • To recommend corrective measures on items of an anomalous nature (including the follow-up, track and monitor and make recommendation for implementation considerations)
  • To develop and maintain relationship with relevant internal and external stakeholders in order embed sustainability accountability within the business.
  • To develop networks with ESG partners and peers to build long-term relationships and promote collaboration opportunities.
  • To develop and maintain relationships with regulatory bodies and industry bodies in order to ensure that the Group operations are within legislative requirements
  • To support and oversee (where necessary) Group Sustainability project execution at all stages, ensuring requirements are met timely and within budget

    Maintain and improve integrated Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability (HSES) practices
    Identify and evaluate climate-related risks and opportunities
    Promote and implement circular economy principles across the value chain, including initiatives for waste minimisation, energy and water efficiency, responsible sourcing, and sustainable material use
    Stay informed and advise on relevant regulations and ESG developments
    Foster a practical culture of health, safety and environmental responsibility
    Support operational leaders and teams to manage HSES responsibility
    Assist with budgeting for health, safety, environment and sustainability
    Coordinate internal and external engagement on sustainability progress
    Community Development and Social Impact
    Implement and maintain digital ESG platforms and data tools to streamline sustainability data collection, tracking, and reporting
    Lead and manage people to achieve performance objectives

    Qualifications

    Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or related field
    Registration with SACNASP (South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions) is recommended where applicable.
    Additional certifications such as GRI Certified Training (for sustainability reporting) or relevant ESG training are advantageous

    Criteria

    Minimum 8–10 years of progressive experience in sustainability, environmental management, or SHEQ roles
    Proven track record in:
    ESG and sustainability reporting
    Climate risk and opportunity assessment
    Stakeholder engagement (internal and external)
    Leading cross-functional ESG projects and embedding sustainability across operational functions
    Exposure to international ESG trends, integrated reporting, and audit processes
    In-depth knowledge of South African environmental, mining, and safety legislation (e.g., NEMA, MPRDA, MHSA, OHS Act)
    Familiarity with ESG disclosure frameworks, sustainability indices, and investor expectations
    Experience with digital sustainability data platforms (e.g., PowerBI or similar tools)
    Strong understanding of circular economy, resource efficiency, and climate strategy principles
    Ability to translate technical environmental and climate data into business-relevant insights
