Job Description

The Biostatistics Research Unit of the SAMRC is an active research entity that collaborates with health and medical researchers from the SAMRC, universities, other research institutions and international agencies. Statisticians in the Biostatistics Research Unit provide statistical support on design, analysis and reporting, to collaborative national and international projects in the SAMRC research portfolio. These range from surveys, epidemiological studies to randomised controlled trials. Statistical methodological development as well as the training and supervision of researchers and junior staff, are also key focus areas. The Biostatistics Research Unit offers a challenging biostatistics career in health and clinical research within a dynamic environment. The Unit has several methodological and application Biostatistics research areas including Bayesian and nonparametric statistics; joint modeling of longitudinal and survival data, complex survey data analyses; multivariate spatial statistics analysis; statistics for clinical trials; structural equation and latent class modelling.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise researchers on the design and analysis of clinical research studies under the guidance supervisor

  • Undertake appropriate statistical analysis of research data and prepare routine and adhoc study reports

  • Writing of program syntax, and code for statistical reports

  • Contribute to scientific presentations and publications

Job Requirements

Statisticians in the Biostatistics Research Unit provide statistical support on design, analysis and reporting, to collaborative national and international projects in the SAMRC research portfolio. These range from surveys, epidemiological studies to randomised controlled and clinical trials. Statistical methodological development as well as the training and supervision of researchers and junior staff, is also done. The SAMRC BRU offers a challenging biostatistics career in health and clinical research within a dynamic environment. The Unit has a number of methodological research programs such as longitudinal data analysis, innovation in the design and analysis of clinical trials, and spatial data analysis. The successful candidate will have an individual research portfolio and contribute to these programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Research- Peer reviewed journal articles or book chapters, technical report.
  • Working on and coordinating all statistical aspects of one or more projects as study statistician.
  • Evidence of use of more complex data analysis techniques.
  • Write-up study design, sample size and analysis plan of proposals.
  • Oversee all aspects of the study such as design, data management, analysis and interpretation of results.
  • Transform data into formats that are clean and suitable for analysis.
  • Carry out independent computing in a timeous manner.
  • Conduct complex statistical analysis.
  • Attendance of advanced methodological training.
  • Poster or oral presentations at local or international conferences or at external meetings where own research is presented by the statistician.
  • Statistical support of Masters or PhD students.
  • Assist in teaching a Biostatistics course.

  • At least 5 years' experience in a clinical and health research environment
  • Evidence of strong academic background and peer-reviewed ISI publication record, with at least 7 ISI publications and at least 4 presentations at conferences or meetings
  • Registered for a PhD, proposal written and accepted by the University
  • At least 5 hours of teaching/training

Advantageous:

Detailed description

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

  • Lead the development and implementation of integrated macroeconomic statistical analysis frameworks by ensuring full vertical and horizontal institutional sector analysis (households, government, corporations and rest of the world), in line with the analytical premise of the System of National Accounts (SNA) and related international guidelines.
  • Drive the statistical and analytical integration of sectoral macroeconomic developments, transforming complex stock and flow statistics into coherent, policy-relevant insights through reconciliation, consistency assessment and interpretive narratives that support monetary policy, financial stability and national accounts and related statistical domain alignment.
    Design and apply advanced econometric, statistical and financial models to support the analysis, forecasting, benchmarking, back-testing and validation of integrated macroeconomic statistics- drawing on methods such as time-series analysis, scenario testing and structural modelling.
  • Co-lead the adoption and application of open-source tools for analytical application, specifically Python and R, generating deep analysis and reproducible research and actively contribute to developing and modernising analytical frameworks and workflows with efficient, code-based solutions.
  • Drive analytical statistical research and methodological innovation, enhancing the quality, accuracy and international comparability of IEA statistical analysis.
  • Provide feedback loops between statistical analysis and methodological frameworks, supporting continuous improvement and the integration of cutting-edge techniques.
  • Coordinate with internal and external data stakeholders (e.g. government, national statistical agencies, regulatory bodies, and SARB departments) to improve the granularity, consistency and analytical richness of IEA statistical research, and to ensure that relevant statistical output enable integrated and timely macroeconomic analysis.

Background

An implementation study on the dapivirine vaginal ring (DVR) was conducted in South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Uganda and Eswatini. The study generated quantitative data on uptake, adherence, and user experiences. We are seeking a qualified Biostatistician to support data analysis for an implementation study on the dapivirine vaginal ring, a long-acting biomedical HIV prevention method. The consultant will analyze quantitative data on uptake, adherence, and user experiences, producing report and publication-ready results to inform regulatory, policy and programmatic decisions.

Scope of Work

· Review study protocol, objectives, and datasets.

· Develop and finalize a statistical analysis plan (SAP).

· Clean and merge datasets

· Conduct appropriate statistical analyses, including descriptive, inferential, and multivariable analyses

· Provide guidance on data quality, management, and handling of missing data.

· Generate report and publication-ready tables, figures, and outputs.

· Contribute to interpretation of findings and drafting of results sections for reports and manuscripts.

· Participate in virtual meetings with the study team as needed.

Deliverables

· Finalize statistical analysis plan.

· Clean and merge datasets

· Write reproducible code (Stata/R/SAS preferred) and conduct appropriate statistical analyses.

· Comprehensive results tables and figures (report and publication ready).

· Analytical report summarizing findings.

· Contributions to reports, manuscripts, policy briefs, and presentations as needed.

Qualifications

· Advanced degree (MSc) in Biostatistics, Statistics, or related quantitative field, PhD preferrable.

· Demonstrated experience in analyzing implementation science or public health studies.

· Proficiency in Stata, R, or SAS.

· Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications or reports.

· Familiarity with HIV prevention research and/or women's health interventions desirable.

· Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

Level of Effort & Duration

Estimated 12 days per month (3 days/week) over 12 months (with flexibility based on agreed scope) from 01 November 2025 to 31 October 2026. Remote, with communication primarily via email/virtual meetings.
