This role is a permanent full-time position. As Specialist Clinic and Medical Emergency Response, you will manage the onsite clinic and medical emergency response (MER) at Hillside to ensure effective occupational medical and MER service delivery and continual improvement within these disciplines

Key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Develop and implement standards and procedures to define requirements for effective occupational medical services and medical emergency response (MER) at the operation;
  • Lead occupational medical and MER governance processes to ensure legal and company compliance;
  • Monitor regulatory changes, technology enhancement and leading practice in occupational medicine and MER and advise Hillside leadership accordingly;
  • Provide input into the development of the Hillside HSER business plan. Define site objectives and targets for effective occupational medical monitoring and MER. Track and report on progress;

  • Ensure that clinic and MER infrastructure are well managed and maintained;
  • Ensure that occupational medical examinations are risk based and legally compliant;

West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust is looking to build a reserve pool of caring and committed individuals for our Non-Emergency Patient Transport Services contracts across the West Midlands area for any vacancies that may arise over the next 12 months.

The main purpose of this role is to safely transport patients with varying mobilities to and from treatment centres or other venues as directed. This could include manual handling of patients, the care of patients and assisting patients, as well as driving.

Some patients may need to be carried (including stairs), wheeled in a chair or a stretcher and escorted to and from the vehicle.

The safe transportation of these patients is paramount to the role. This includes securing patients, wheelchairs, stretchers etc in the vehicles.

You will be required to drive a variety of vehicles, including cars, ambulances and other vehicles.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the job include:

  • Carry out required vehicle and equipment checks.
  • Be prepared to work flexibly to ensure patients are moved in a timely, safe and dignified manner.
  • Work within Contract Specific Quality Standards and ensure a high level of customer care.
  • Ensure effective communication with the Control Centre, by telephone or electronic means.
  • Transfer patients using equipment and skills specific to individual needs.
  • Provide effective care to patients, appropriate to their requirements using available equipment.
  • Transport patients safely and considerately, including pre-planned and ad-hoc journeys.
  • Ensure patients have a safe, smooth journey, complying with all relevant traffic legislation and driving with consideration for other road users.

Requirements
  • Grade 12 Certificate, MBChB degree or equivalent. HPCSA registration certificate as a Medical Officer. Current registration with HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner (2025/2026). DipPEC and FCEM Part 1 passed before the short-listing date South African citizenship or residency. Knowledge and experience in medical emergencies. Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to work under pressure. Added advantage: Ultrasound courses, equivalent, research, and other emergency medicine-related courses.
Duties
  • Perform duties according to guidelines from the Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Witwatersrand, and Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.Clinical training, teaching, and assisting in the examination of undergraduate and postgraduate students. The incumbent will be responsible for interviewing, investigating, diagnosing, and overseeing the treatment of patient-related administrative duties. Participation in departmental meetings, journal clubs, case presentations, lectures, and ward rounds. Ensure that administration and record keeping is done in the department. Undertaking research. Attending and presenting at academic meetings. Encourage good working relationships between colleagues and departments. Availability for ongoing assessments. Signing annual performance agreements and availability for quarterly reviews. Note that the incumbent will be rotating through the Emergency Departments within the WITS Emergency Medicine Division (WEMD) circuit during the training period.
